My degree, with hnrs, in English literature had nt really prepared me fr anything practical. I knew I wanted t make a difference in the wrld smehw, but I had n idea hw t d that. That’s when I learned abut the Lighthuse Prject.
I started my jurney as a Lighthuse Prject vlunteer by reading as much as I culd abut the experiences f previus vlunteers. I knew it wuld be a lt f hard wrk, and that I wuld be away frm my family and friends fr a very lng time. In shrt, I did nt take my decisin t apply fr the Lighthuse Prject lightly. Neither did my family.
Eventually, hwever, I wn the supprt f my family, and I sent in all the paperwrk needed fr the applicatin. After cuntless interviews and presentatins, I managed t stand ut amng the candidates and survive the test alne. Several mnths later, I finally received a call asking me t reprt fr duty. I wuld be ging t a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had n idea. But I was abut t find ut.
After cmpleting my training, I was sent t the village that was small and desperately in need f prper accmmdatin. Thugh the lcal villagers were pr, they ffered their hmes, fd, and hearts as if I were their wn family. I was asked t lead a small team f lcal peple in building a new schlhuse. Fr the next year r s, I taught in that same schlhuse. But I smetimes think I learned mre frm my students than they did frm me.
Smetime during that perid, I realized that all thse things that had seemed s strange r unusual t me n lnger did, thugh I did nt get anywhere with the lcal language, and returned t the United States a different man. The Lighthuse Prject had changed my life frever.

The farms f the future may lk very different frm that f tday. That’s because farms d nt have t be utside anymre. They als wn’t have t be abve grund. In Lndn, 100 feet belw the streets there was a huge empty space. Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, funders f the cmpany Grwing Undergrund, thught it wuld be an ideal spt t build a hydrpnic (水栽的) farm. After all, these types f farms are ding well in ther indr spaces.
Funded in 2015, Grwing Undergrund’s farm grws micrgreens and salad leaves using hydrpnic technlgy that grws plants in water but nt sil. In fact, the cmpany said that its hydrpnic technlgy allws fr the perfect pest-free grwing envirnment.
These methds use abut 70 percent water less than traditinal field agriculture and all the nutrients are kept within a clsed circle system. They can grw the greens all year rund because they are nt affected by weather r grwing seasns.
But it is the LED lighting system that is the key t grwing fd undergrund. Ballard said, “Already, LEDs allw the grwers t change the flavr f the greens, as their sugars and starches develp differently under different light spectrums (光谱).”
Right nw, the cmpany nly sells greens with a lt f leaves because they are the nly crps that grw fast enugh t be ecnmically feasible but Ballard believes that will change. “As technlgies imprve, yu’ll see sft fruits, cucumbers, peppers,” he said.
The cmpany’s gal is t keep fd lcal. They say that all f the greens can be in yur kitchen within fur hurs f being picked. They currently sell t lcal restaurants in Lndn, but they hpe t be entering the lcal grceries sn.
    8. What makes the undergrund farm pssible?
    A. The rich sil.B. The great demand fr fruits.
    C. The hydrpnic technlgy.D. The gd weather cnditin.
    9. What is the functin f the LED lighting system?
    A. T get rid f pests.B. T increase the temperature f undergrund farm.
    C. T allw greens t grw rapidly.D. T prvide varius light spectrums.
    10. What des the underlined wrd “feasible” in Paragraph 5 prbably mean?
    A. Difficult.B. Challenged.C. Impssible.D. Achievable.
    11. What des the cmpany expect f the undergrund farm?
    A. It’ll benefit mre custmers.B. It’ll be envirnment-friendly.
    C. It’ll keep fd fresher fr lnger.D. It’ll use the latest technlgy.
    D
“S, Mr. Albert, yu’ve tld us abut yur strengths but what abut yur weaknesses?” It’s a cmmn interview questin. T which a classic humblebrag (谦虚自夸) reply is, “Well. I must admit that I’m a bit f a perfectinist.” After all, what cmpany wuldn’t want t emply smebdy wh seeks perfectin? But it turns ut that there is a prfund difference between high-achievers and perfectinists. In a cruel irny, the perfectinist traits culd actually prevent smene frm achieving their full ptential.
The rts f perfectinism actually lie in a deep desire t feel perfect. Mst ften a perfectinist persnality is frmed in reactin t sme frm f childhd trauma. Fr example, fllwing her parents’ divrce, a yung girl might strive t always be gd, t always be perfect because at sme level she believes that it must have been her fault that her parents separated. S as lng as she is perfect, nthing s terrible wuld happen again.
Given such rigins, it appears that the thinking and emtinal styles assciated with perfectinism are particularly dangerus t mental health. Think f the harshest and merciless perfectinists yu knw. They always, always, always find fault. Their cgnitive (认知) styles include all-r-nthing thinking, where nly perfectin is seen as an acceptable result; fear f failure, where a perfectinist is driven by fear rather than pulled by the prspect f success in their endeavrs; defensiveness in the face f cnstructive criticism. All f these seem t be linked t a wide range f psychlgical prblems including eating disrders, anxiety and depressin, and even suicide.
Changing this mindset is the key t treating the cnditin when it becmes a disrder but it is difficult t achieve. Perfectinists are essentially in an abusive relatinship with themselves. It’s hard enugh t withdraw frm abusive relatinships with thers. Hw much harder is it when yu yurself are the abuser? S perhaps a better answer t the interview questin psed at the start f this article wuld be, “I used t be a perfectinist but nw I’m well n the rad t recvery.”
    12. Why des the authr mentin the interview questin in paragraph 1?
    A. T prvide an example.B. T intrduce the tpic.
    C. T supprt the argument.D. T attract the readers’ interest.
    13. Wh will mst prbably becme a perfectinist?
    A. A high- achiever.B. A persn wh always finds fault.
    C. An vercnfident man.D. A sn f a vilent alchlic father.
    14. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
    A. Perfectinism ften has three different types.
    B. Perfectinism has a bad effect n physical health.
    C. Perfectinism is caused by high persnal standard.
    D. Perfectinism is a risk factr fr psychlgical disrders.
    15. What des the authr think f perfectinism?
    A. It’s hard fr peple t get rid f it.B. It drives peple t achieve success.
    C. It’s mre f a strength than a weakness.D. It inevitably leads t mental prblems.
