Frtunately, I went t cllege. That’s where my reading struggles really reared their ugly head. Trips t the grcery stre were stressful because there was s much reading invlved in the simple act f buying fd. I wuld misread labels and grab the wrng items. Once, I picked up apple sauce thinking it was apple slices. I didn’t ntice my mistake until I gt hme and realized that it was my inability t understand the differences in the wrding n the labels that caused the mistake. I realized that I needed t make an imprtant decisin. If I wanted t be a better versin f me, I had t becme a strnger reader.
I jined a bk club and read every free mment I had. My jurney with reading als created a desire in me t inspire thers wh struggle with reading. S I started a nnprfit, Share the Magic Fundatin, trying t transfrm the lives f children living in underserved cmmunities thrugh literacy.

Decades f research have shwn that health, incme and emplyment status are majr factrs in predicting peple’s satisfactin with their lives. Hwever, researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK wanted t investigate what ther activities r circumstances might imprve mental health. “I was really drawn t lking int whether crafting might be gd fr yur well-being because it’s s accessible, affrdable and it’s already ppular,” says Helen Keyes, a researcher at Anglia Ruskin University.
Keyes and her clleagues analvzed mre than 7, 000 respnses t the yearly Taking Part Survey, which asks peple in England hw they engage with activities such as arts and culture, sprts and Internet use. All participants were als asked abut their happiness, anxiety, lneliness, life satisfactin and if they felt their life was wrthwhile.
Mre than a third f participants said they had dne at least ne art r craft activity in the previus year, including drawing, painting, phtgraphy, film-making r wdwrking. Even after accunting fr factrs like health and emplyment status, researchers fund that engaging in arts and crafts was assciated with higher scres acrss their measures f mental health. The effect was mdest — arund 0.2 n a10- pint scale — but crafting was a strnger predictr that smene felt their life was wrthwhile cmpared with harder-t-change factrs such as having a jb.
“There is smething abut crafting that gives a sense f prgress and self- expressin in a way that emplyment ften desn’t,” says Keyes. “Yu get t be really prud f what yu’re creating and see prgress in frnt f yur eyes in real time.” The psitive effect f creative pursuits n a persn’s sense that life is wrthwhile was1.6 times higher than emplyment status. Arts and crafts als bsted (使增长)happiness and life satisfactin, but didn’t make a meaningful difference t reprted lneliness, which may be because many crafts can be dne sl.
“Prmting and supprting arts and crafts culd be used as a preventive measure fr mental health n a natinal scale,” says Keyes. “When peple d it, they enjy it. It’s an easy win.”

Fr decades, scientists thught f the brain as the mst valuable and cnsequently mst clsely guarded part f the bdy. Lcked safely behind the bld-brain barrier, it was bradly free f the harm f viruses and the battles started by the immune system (免疫系统). Then, abut 20 years ag, sme researchers began t wnder: is the brain really s separated frm the bdy? The answer, accrding t a grwing bdy f evidence, is n.
The list f brain cnditins that have been assciated with changes elsewhere in the bdy is lng and grwing. Changes in the makeup f the micrrganisms in the digestive system have been linked t disrders such as Parkinsn’s disease. There is als a thery that infectin during pregnancy culd lead t brain diseases in babies.
The effect is tw-way. There is a lengthening list f symptms nt typically viewed as disrders f the nervus system, but the brain plays a large part in them. Fr example, the develpment f a fever is influenced by a ppulatin f nerve cells that cntrl bdy temperature and appetite. Evidence is munting that cancers use nerves t grw and spread.
The intercnnectin between the brain and bdy has prmising implicatins fr ur ability t bth understand and treat illnesses. If sme brain disrders start utside the brain, then perhaps treatments fr them culd als reach in frm utside. Treatments that take effect thrugh the digestive system, the heart r ther rgans, wuld be much easier and less risky than thse that must crss the bld-brain barrier.
It als wrks in the ppsite directin. Study shws mice have healthier hearts after receiving stimulatin t a brain area invlved in psitive emtin and mtivatin. Activatin f the brain reward centre — called the ventral tegmental area (VTA) — seems t cause immune changes that cntribute t it. Wrking ut hw this happens culd help t destry cancers, enhance respnses t vaccines and even re-evaluate physical diseases that, fr centuries, have nt been cnsidered as being psychlgically driven.
    12. What d the researchers fcus n abut the brain?
    A. Its prtecting system.B. Its expsure t diseases.
    C. Its cntrlling functin.D. Its cnnectin t the bdy.
    13. Hw des the authr supprt his idea in paragraph 2?
    A. By explaining a thery.B. By prviding examples.
    C. By making cmparisns.D. By presenting cause and effect.
    14. Which best describes treatments that d nt crss the bld-brain barrier?
    A. Cheaper.B. Mre specific.
    C. Safer.D. Mre direct.
    15. What des the study suggest in the last paragraph?
    A. Brain health depends n immune changes.
    B. Brain stimulatin leads t negative emtins.
    C. The brain can help enhance psychlgical health.
    D. The brain may be key t treating physical diseases.
