In the heart f the Kanien’keha Natin (卡尼恩克哈部族)in Canada, McCmber, a native language teacher reflected n a questin raised by Mari (毛利) language advcate Sir Karetu: what was his dream fr the future f his language?
Kanien’keha, the Mhawk language, is endangered, and fr decades, McCmber has wrked hard t perate a native language schl. At the turn f the century, as it encuntered mre barriers, McCmber lked arund the wrld fr help and inspiratin, and Karetu was the answer. “Dn’t wait fr mney r apprval; just d the wrk,” Karetu tld him. It’s the same message Karetu carried with him decades ag, when te re Mari, the Mari language, was als n the line.
In the early 1970s, yung Mari advcates in New Zealand marched t the gvernment, demanding Mari be taught in all public schls. In 1982, Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi established Khanga Re, an engaging language prgram where Mari was the nly language taught, spken and used bth in the classrm and at hme, and the curses fcused n their histry and culture. “Grandparents became teachers,” she says. “The difference-maker was that the Khanga Re was entirely cmmunity-led. Families raised the mney t rent classrm spaces, and vlunteers planned and taught classes.”
Translated in English as “language nest”, the Khanga Re mdel quickly became an imprtant cultural exprt and inspired ther minrity cmmunities wrldwide. “Our parents ruled,” a student f McCmber’s nest schl says, “They wanted t teach us the beauty f ur language, ur culture, and wh we are. And it has given me the cnfidence t speak and read with ease in bth English and Kanien’keha.”

New technlgies tend t cause a cycle f cncern, disrder, and cnflict befre eventually being accepted. Recent writings abut artificial intelligence (AI) and ther advances in cmputer science suggest that we are preparing t welcme the final stage f this latest rund f inventin.
The Last Human Jb, scilgist Allisn Pugh’s new bk centered n caregiving and human cnnectin in the age f autmatin, warns readers against unreserved acceptance f these technlgical advances, citing “cnnective labr” as valuable human wrk that will nt be easily replaced by algrithms (算法). “Absent frm discussins abut AI and autmatin,” Pugh argues, “is the impact that these systems might have n the emtinal understandings we build f urselves and thers.”
Pugh sets the stage by arguing fr the value f human cnnectin and the imprtance f bth seeing and being seen by thers. “Practitiners (从业者) said they gained a sense f purpse simply frm the pprtunity f bserving peple at their mst defenseless,” she bserves. She then prvides a summary f hw care wrk is being increasingly autmated, shwing hw quantificatin and measurement have taken ver many aspects f human-facing jbs, leaving little rm fr dctrs, teachers, and thers t build cnnectin.
“When ne ges t a dctr r a teacher, the encunter is full f the ptential fr shame, a risk that makes it all the mre pwerful when practitiners shw empathic (同理心的) reflectin,” writes Pugh. In chapter 8, she explains hw such interactins can be dne right. Research cnducted by herself and thers identifies three key aspects supprting cnnective labr: “relatinal design”, r hw peple are set up t interact with ne anther; “cnnective culture,” r shared practices and beliefs that influence hw peple interact; and “resurce distributin,” which includes time given fr interactin, wrker-t-client rates, and the extent f technlgy and data use, amng ther factrs.
Pugh cncludes by arguing that we need a scial mvement fr cnnectin. “We need t fight fr what we might call ur ‘scial health’,” she maintains.
25. What is the main cncern f Allisn Pugh's new bk?
A. The impact f AI n future emplyment.
B. The apprach t living and wrking with AI.

A. T explain hw t di s care wrk.
B. T argue against the autmatin technlgy.
C. T prve the significance f human cnnectin.

There’s a classic shrt stry in which a yung man travels years ahead and meets his future self. Narratives like this have always been related t science fictin. But what if yu culd meet yur future self?
I’m a psychlgist and prfessr. My research ver the past 15 years isn’t far frm this theme. I’ve largely fcused n hw peple think abut and relate t their future selves, and explred the reasns why we have such a hard time making lng-term decisins. In my research, I’ve learnt that we ften imagine ur future selves like strangers, which can impede us in making lng-term chices. One way t bridge the emtinal gap is t think f future selves in mre cncrete and vivid ways, like writing letters t and frm ne’s future self, which can strengthen the cnnectin between current and future selves.
Admittedly, having peple engage in an imagined cnversatin is a far cry frm actually meeting ne’s future self. But it’s believed that far richer interactins may happen in the near future thrugh artificial intelligence (AI). It wuldn’t be predicting exactly what chices yu’d make. It’d be mre abut shwing yur ptential, based n the lives f peple similar t yu: nt just ne pssible life fr yu, but rather, the mst pssible life path fr yu. Such interactins culd ffer valuable insights int ur ptential future selves.
S, t return t my riginal questin: if yu culd time-travel t meet yur future self, what aspects f yur life wuld yu want t knw mre abut? I realized, thrugh thrugh reflectins, that the mst pwerful questins wuld be nes that helped me make better chices tday —questins explring persnal grwth, regrets and unfulfilled actins.
Actually, yu dn’t need t wait fr time travel r advanced AI fr answers that yu can act n. Thrugh my research, I’ve learnt that simply taking a bit f time t picture this meeting can help yu make better chices nw. All yu need is a little imaginatin, and the willingness t put yurself in the shes f a persn yu currently treat as a stranger.
29. Why is it difficult fr peple t make lng-term decisins accrding t the authr?
A. Technlgy fr time travel is nt available.
B. Strangers cannt help with decisin-making.
C. Writing letters t ne's future self is impractical.
D. Peple find it hard t cnnect with their distant selves.
30. What des the underlined phrase “a far cry frm” mean m Paragraph 3?
A. cntradictry t B. very different frm
C. nt as cnvenient as D. t. a ppular than
31. Which questin wuld the authr mst likely ask his future self?
A. Why hasn’t my hard wrk ever paid ff?
B. What can AI d t help peple becme better persns?
C. If given the chance, what wuld yu have dne differently?
D. Hw can I succeed withut ging thrugh all the difficulties in life?
32. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Time travel: What if yu met yur future self?
B. My research: Hw d peple view their future selves?
C. Emtinal gap: Why can’t we talk with ur future selves?
D. Artificial intelligence: Is it pssible t meet yur future self?

In Chinese traditinal architecture, a skywell is an pen curtyard r well-like space usually lcated at the heart f a building r grup f buildings. 33 Their designs ften feature the classic Chinese du gng verhangs t prvide shade and cllect water int a central basin.
Chinese skywells are s effective in cling hmes because they can cntrl natural airing. Cl air is drawn int the building frm the lwer levels, and warm air escapes and rises thrugh the upper levels. 34
The skywell’s layut and cnstructin materials als help in thermal(热量的)regulatin. During the day, the curtyard absrbs heat frm the sun, acting as a thermal mass. 35 This day-night cycle helps maintain a balanced and cnsistent temperature indrs.
Mst traditinal skywells include water features, such as funtains r pnds. A recent study has shwn that the mst significant part f a skywell’s cling effect cmes frm these water bdies. 36 As water evaprates(蒸发)frm these features, it absrbs heat frm the surrunding air. This reduces the temperature within the curtyard and surrunding rms.
37 One fitting example is the Natinal Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technlgy Research Centre in Jinan, an 18-stry building that has a giant pen space at its heart frm the fifth flr t the tp flr. The tilets, elevatrs, and meeting rms surrund this space. This enhances natural airing and natural energy cnsumptin, accrding t the Shanghai-based CCDI Grup.
A.This prmtes fresh air flw, especially during ht summer days.
B.It is ften a square surrunded by the building’s rms and wings.
C.This cling was disadvantageus in regins with ht and dry climates.
D.It’s prbably why temperatures arund them are 2.6℃ t 4.2℃ lwer.
E.These wnders cntinue t inspire architects t seek sustainable slutins.
F.The magic f skywells stands as witnesses t the wisdm f ancient builders.
G.The stred heat is gradually released as the utdr temperature drps at night.
