“Peple always get surprised when they realize they get interesting, nvel ideas at unexpected times, ” says Kalina Christff, a scientist at the University f British Clumbia in Vancuver, “because ur culture tells us that we shuld d it thrugh hard wrk.”
Nw researchers begin t understand why these clever thughts ccur during mre passive activities and what’s happening in the brain. They have fund that the key is a series f brain activities— within what’s called the default mde（DM） netwrk— that ccur while an individual is resting r perfrming habitual tasks that dn’t require much attentin.
“Simply put, it is a state that yur brain returns t when yu’re relaxed,” explains Christff. “By cntrast, when yu’re wrking n a demanding task, the brain’s executive cntrl（EC） systems keep yur thinking fcused, analytical, and lgical.”
Researchers find that the DM netwrk is als invlved in the carly stages f idea generatin, drawing frm past experiences and knwledge abut the wrld. When yur mind wanders, yu’re allwing thughts t playfully crss yur mind, which helps yu cmbine infrmatin and ideas in new ways and smething clicks.
“A cautinary nte: While the DM net, wrk plays a key rle in the creative prcess, it is the EC systems that help yu t evaluate and apply the creative ideas effectively t yur prblems in the real wrld,” Christff says. “S it’s unwise t place blind faith in the discvery that creative ideas can be generated in the shwer r during any ther kinds f mind wandering.
