Brn in Beijing and raised in Shanghai, Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle t preserve the ancient Buddhist wall paintings at Dunhuang, in nrth-west China’s Gansu Prvince. The 1,653-year-ld Dunhuang Mga Caves are a huge cllectin f Buddhist art—mre than 2,000 Buddha figures and 45,000 square metres f paintings spread amng 735 caves. It is a UNESCO Wrld Heritage Site.
Archaelgist Fan was sent t Dunhuang after graduating frm Beijing University in 1963. While in Dunhuang, a remte village in the desert then, Fan lived in an abandned temple. At first, she did nt even dare t g ut t the tilet at night. T prtect the treasures frm sand and dampness, Fan and ther wrkers put drs n the caves, planted trees and started mnitring temperature and humidity in the caves. They als cntrlled the number f visitrs.
In the late 1990s, with turism bming natinwide since natinal hlidays were extended, the lcal gvernment planned t g public with Dunhuang Mga Caves, but fund Fan firmly in their way. “The heritage wuld have been destryed if it had been listed,” she said.

Chimps use lud calls and gestures t make their feelings knwn but until nw, the exact meaning fr individual mvements has remained a mystery. Nw researchers believe they have translated the key gestures used in the chimp cmmunity and identified their intentins fr the first time.

Dr Hbaiter used behavir sampling and filmed all recrded cases f gestural cmmunicatin.
