Children can wrk tgether t reach a target that benefits a whle grup even if it is at a persnal cst t themselves, a new study has shwn.
Researchers invited grups f 6 t 10-year-lds t take part in a game where they were each given cntainers f water and culd decide hw much f it t ffer int a cmmn pl. If the grup cntributed a certain amunt f water, it resulted in benefits fr the whle grup, but children als btained benefits fr any water they kept. At the same time, the participants were either given feedback abut their wn utcmes in the game r abut everyne's utcmes.
The results shwed the majrity f grups achieved their bjectives and cperated until the last rund f the game, even when children bserved the utcmes f thers within their grups. Hwever, thse wh did see everyne's utcmes were smewhat less likely t keep reaching the target as the game prgressed, and differences in individual utcmes became mre nticeable. Researchers say the findings prvide valuable insights int hw grups f peple can wrk tgether t vercme challenges and demnstrate the effectiveness f setting clear targets.
Dr Patricia Kanngiesser, Assciate Prfessr in Psychlgy at the University f Plymuth and the study's lead authr, said:“A lt f the challenges facing sciety tday invlve chices between ne's self-interest and cntributing t the greater gd. That is certainly the case if we think abut things like climate actin, where targets can nly be achieved if peple and natins wrk tgether. Our study shws that wrking twards a clear target can prduce results that finally benefit everyne. And even children as yung as six can d it.”
The study is the latest by Dr Kanngiesser and Plymuth clleague Dr Jan Wike t use games t study human behaviur and explre ways t prmte cperatin. It als allwed them t explre findings frm previus research, which shwed that having the pprtunity t cmpare wn and thers’ utcmes can lead t cmpetitin and decrease willingness t cntribute t the cmmn gd. Fr the purpses f this study, children had the pprtunity t talk during the game and spke, fr example, abut reaching the cmmn gal.
28. Wh btained benefits in the game?
A. Only the children wh kept sme water.
B. The children wh made it t the last rund.
C. The participant wh cntributed the mst water.
D. The grup that cntributed the required amunt.
29. What's Kanngiesser's attitude twards the targets and cperatin?
A. Critical. B. Appreciative. C. Indifferent. D. Dubtful.
30. What can we infer frm paragraph 5?
A. Children have many challenges slving current prblems.
B. Researchers find valuable insights int the clear targets.
C. Peple wrk tgether t achieve gals benefiting everyne.
D. Peple think abut climate actin affecting their daily life.
31. Why des the authr mentin Kanngiesser and Wike?
A. T ffer mre cntext f the study.
B. T give examples f great prfessrs.
C. T encurage studying fr the prject.
D. T get readers t cperate with them.

Weather researchers are using artificial intelligence (AI) systems t imprve existing weather predictin methds. But, experts say the AI tls currently face limitatins and shuld be used alng with traditinal predictin methds t be mst effective. AI systems trained t predict, r frecast weather events are nw being used by many gvernment agencies and rganizatins wrldwide. Such systems aim t prduce weather predictins faster and at a lwer cst than traditinal frecasting methds.
One weather predicting system that has shwn prmise is the Ggle-financed GraphCast methd. This machine learning-based system trains directly n weather data that has already been cllected and examined. Such methds have demnstrated an ability t utperfrm traditinal frecasting systems. The system wrks by cmbining past weather predictins with mdern frecasting mdels t prvide the mst cmplete picture f weather and climate.
In Eurpe, the Eurpean Center fr Medium-Range Weather Frecasts (ECMWF) has been using AI predictin tls since January. The rganizatin prvides detailed weather frecasts fur times per day t natins acrss Eurpe.
The ECMWF technlgy is called the Artificial Intelligence/ Integrated Frecasting System(AIFS). The grup describes the system as a“data-driven” frecasting mdel. It is designed t make many predietins quickly, including fr extreme events invlving pwerful strms and heatwaves. AI-supprted data frm the ECMWF crrectly predicted intense rains last mnth acrss parts f Eurpe that resulted in widespread flding. But while the predictins were right, destructin caused by the flding culd nt be avided.
Experts tld Reuters this is largely because it is still difficult t gather and fully utilize (利用) sme cllected weather data. In additin, there is a need t strengthen and imprve currentAI mdels used t predict weather.
Andrew Charltn-Perez is a prfessr f meterlgy— the scientific study f weather prcesses—— at the University f Reading in Britain. He tld Reuters, “In sme cases, AI mdels can beat physics-based mdels, but in ther cases vice versa (反之亦然).” Charltn- Perez said he thinks the best use f AI-based weather frecasts wuld be t use them in cmbinatin with traditinal weather predicting tls. This, he nted, culd utilize AI data t prduce weather predictins based n large sets f infrmatin cllected frm different surces.
32. What's the advantage f AI weather predicting system?
A. It prvides detailed weather frecasts frequently.
B. It can avid extreme events including heatwaves.
C. It can predict weather cnditins faster at a lw cst.
D. It is used in all walks f life withut limitatins.
33. What is the purpse f AIFS?
A. T avid natinal flds. B. T frecast disaster destructin.
C. T prvide timely data. D. T predict weather events quickly.
34. What can we knw abut the predictin f AI-data frm the ECMWF?
A. It's perfect. B. It's precise.
C. It's much easier. D. It's wrldwide.
35. Hw can AI imprve the weather frecast?
A. By cmbining AI with traditinal methds.
B. By using AI predictin tls cllectively.
C. By making use f Ggle GraphCast methd.
D. By gathering a lt f current weather data.
