Mmaday didn’t feel that the recgnitin was as deserving as thers thught. The Kiwa writer had always cnsidered himself a pet abve all else. “I dn’t think f myself as a nvelist,” he tld the Ls Angeles Times’s Edward Iwata. “I still feel petry is the highest frm f literature.” Many years after Huse Made f Dawn’s publicatin, he still saw its success as an accident.
Mmaday died at age 89, and he left behind an astnishing literary achievement. His barrier-breaking nvel paved the way fr a new generatin f Native American authrs, including James Welch, Leslie Marmn Silk, Luise Erdrich and Jy Harj. His distinctive style and vivid descriptins make the cmparisn t petry apprpriate. “That’s exactly what it was,” says Kevin Gver, a citizen f the Pawnee Tribe f Oklahma. “It really reads like petry. It is quite unique. I’ve seen very little that’s like it befre r since.”
Mmaday was brn n February 27, 1934, in Lawtn, Oklahma. When he was a baby, the family relcated t a reservatin in Arizna. They mved nce again t Jemez Puebl, New Mexic, when he was 12. Mmaday has said that the main character f his first nvel is a cmbinatin f the trubled individuals he knew as a child at Jemez Puebl. After earning a master’s degree and PhD in English frm Stanfrd University, Mmaday taught at several institutins. He wrte Huse Made f Dawn in the mrnings befre class.
“Huse Made f Dawn was abut what it means t be Native in cntemprary circumstances,” says Gver, wh remembers fllwing the nvel’s publicatin and rise t literary praise when he was a child. “Mmaday was frm my part f the cuntry, dwn in suthwest Oklahma. I remember we were all amazed — nt that we culd appreciate when we were kids the quality f his wrk — but just the fact that smebdy like us had prduced smething that was winning such praise.”

Many peple view cities largely in negative terms — as crwded, dirty, unhealthy envirnments that are breeding (繁殖) grunds fr disease and crime. Peple fear that as cities get bigger, living cnditins will get wrse. T a grwing number f ecnmists, urban planners, and envirnmentalists, urbanizatin is gd news. Many planners nw believe big cities ffer a slutin t dealing with the prblem f Earth’s grwing ppulatin.
Harvard ecnmist Edward Glaeser is ne persn wh believes that cities bring largely psitive benefits. Glaeser’s ptimism is reflected in the title f his bk The Triumph f the City. Glaeser argues that pr peple flck t cities because that’s usually where the mney is. Cities are prductive because f “the absence f space between peple”, which reduces the cst f transprting gds, peple, and ideas. While the flw f gds has always been imprtant t cities, what is mst imprtant tday is the flw f ideas. Successful cities attract and reward smart peple with higher wages, and they enable peple t learn frm ne anther. In the trading flr f the New Yrk Stck Exchange n Wall Street, emplyees wrk in ne pen, crwded space sharing infrmatin. “They value knwledge ver space. That’s what the mdern city is all abut.”
Anther champin f urbanizatin is envirnmentalist Stewart Brand. Frm an eclgical perspective, says Brand, mving peple ut f cities wuld be disastrus. Because cities are dense, they allw half f the wrld’s ppulatin t live n abut fur percent f the land, leaving mre space fr pen cuntry, such as farmland. Peple living in cities als have less impact per capita (人均) n the envirnment. Their rads, sewers (下水道) , and pwer lines are shrter and require fewer resurces t build and perate. City apartments require less energy t heat, cl, and light than larger huses in suburbs and rural areas. Mst imprtantly, peple living in dense cities drive less. They can walk t many destinatins, and public transprtatin is practical because enugh peple travel regularly t the same places. As a result, dense cities tend t prduce fewer greenhuse gas emissins per persn than scattered, sprawling suburbs.
Despite the negative aspects such as pllutin and serius prblems like urban slums, it is a mistake t see urbanizatin as evil; instead, we shuld view it as an inevitable part f develpment. Rapid grwth itself is nt the real prblem — the larger issue is hw t manage the grwth.
28.Why des the authr mentin the New Yrk Stck Exchange in Paragraph 2?
A.T indicate the space there is valuable.
B.T shw hw gds can be exchanged.
C.T illustrate the imprtance f infrmatin flw.
D.T describe what a mdern city shuld lk like.

The fact that gender diversity is smething that cmpanies cnstantly desire highlights the prblem in itself. Actually, there are several prfessinal industries where the female t male rati (比例) is still nwhere clse t equal. Acrss industries, the wrkfrce gender balance is still highly skewed (偏向……的), even in dmains which d nt cnventinally invlve labrius wrk. The tech industry is a case in pint, with the wrkfrce imbalance definitely being ne f the mst prminent n the list.
Diversity and inclusin need t g hand in hand, and wmen arund the wrld are increasingly assuming imprtant psitins and taking cre decisins in the tech sectr. These wmen are driving technlgical change and innvatin which impact the industry at large.
Gender diversity, like diversity in general, is imprtant fr varied perspectives and thught prcesses in a cmpany. These perspectives are what help shape advancements and new ideas in technlgy and verall peratins fr the success f the business. This is especially true fr technlgies such as AI. The effects f persnal biases n AI can tilt (使……倾斜) the results and, thus, they require a number f inputs and cautin n the team’s part, t be able t prduce accurate slutins based n diverse and inclusive data.
Accrding t a 2017 reprt n Higher Educatin by the Ministry f Human Resurce Develpment, Gvernment f India, wmen were at r near parity (对等) amng undergraduate degrees in science IT and cmputer. Mst wmen equal men when it cmes t skills, but face discriminatin in ther areas, thus creating a gap and reducing the will t cntinue at the cmpany.
Accrding t reprts, biased treatment within the wrkplace is the mst frequently cited reasn fr leaving, fllwed by pr management. There is still scpe fr a shift in attitudes at wrkplaces, which is a majr bstacle when it cmes t retaining wmen emplyees. In rder t retain this talent and hire mre talent like this, gvernments, NGOs and leaders frm tech rganizatins need t cme tgether t help clse the gender gap further by prviding mre flexible wrk ptins and decisin-making pprtunities fr wmen.
Mre and mre wmen acrss the wrld are interested in pursuing tech careers r maintaining their existing nes. There is a need t encurage them t take up rles in AI and STEM (Science, Technlgy, Engineering, and Maths) with pprtunities that are bth fair and equal. Given the cmputer-driven nature f AI, there is a need fr wmen frm diverse backgrunds t balance ut the cnventinally male-dminated prfessin t give an accurate representatin. Thus, an inclusive and diverse wrkfrce, cmbined with better HR plicies will retain and draw in mre wmen. This, in turn, will help the entire tech industry t develp a mre cmprehensive, empathetic (感同身受的) way f peratins, which will undubtedly influence the future sci-cultural thread driven by prducts and services develped by them.
32.Frm the first paragraph we knw that ________.
A.gender balance prblem remains t be slved
B.labrius wrk demands mre gender balance
C.nt all industries have gender balance prblem
D.gender balance prblem has been mre serius
33.Wmen emplyees are reprted t leave their jbs mainly because f ________.
A.unsatisfying incmeB.unfair treatment
C.cmpetitive wrkplaceD.pr management
34.Which f the fllwing can help t retain and attract mre wmen?
A.Encuraging wmen t take up all kinds f rles.
B.Treating wmen emplyees mre kindly than t men emplyees.
C.Offering wmen diverse wrk chices and decisin-making pprtunities.
D.Prviding a tlerant wrking envirnment cmbined with favrable welfare.
35.What is the purpse f writing this passage?
A.T appeal t wmen t prtect their prper rights
B.T present the fact f gender bias in the tech industry
C.T call fr mre wmen representatin in the tech industry
D.T teach the tech industry hw t get rid f gender bias
