In the darker mnths my nline curses help peple learn abut wildlife in the hpe that it will increase their enjyment f the marine and castal envirnments they spend time in.
My favurite spt n the Berwickshire Cast has gt t be a place called Petticwick. The views up the cast and inland t the Mire Lch are secnd t nne. It’s a place where yu can marvel at gelgy which cvers unimaginable perids f time. Yu can listen t and watch thusands f seabirds that return t the cliffs t breed each spring. Yung adults have strng psitive memries f the music their parents lved when they were the same age, a study finds.
Participants in a study n musical memry said they remembered and lved the music that was ppular in the early 1980s, when their parents were yung. They als relished the music f the 1960s, which their grandparents may have been playing while changing their mm’s diapers (尿布). “They wuld hear this music and say, ‘Oh yeah, that’s my parents’ music,’ with bvius fndness,” says Carl Lynne Krumhansl, the psychlgy prfessr at Crnell University wh led the study.
The scientists had been testing musical memry in an earlier study, and were surprised t find that cllege age participants culd recgnize lder pp and rck sngs just as quickly as the new stuff. Even mre surprisingly, they liked the lder stuff mre. Therefre, the researchers decided t find ut what was happening, using clips (片段) frm hits n Billbard lists between 1955 and 2009. Mre than 60 student vlunteers (average age 20) listened t shrt clips f the tp tw pp and rck sngs f each year. The researchers quizzed them abut which sngs they recgnized, hw much they liked them and their emtinal respnses. They were als asked if they had memries assciated with the sngs and whether thse memries were frm listening with parents, alne, r with thers.
“We didn’t have any idea that yung adults had the strngest persnal memries f the music f the early 1980s”, Krumhansl said. She and her clleague, Justin Adam Zupnick f the University f Califrnia, were even mre surprised t see the secnd “reminiscence bump (回忆高峰)” in emtin and memry fr tp hits was frm 1965 t 1969.
The cnnectin t parents’ music isn’t entirely surprising. Music plays a central rle in bringing up a child. Sngs are taught at hme and schl and heard mre infrmally as part f the hme envirnment. The sngs parents chse t listen t reflect their taste, their values, and their era. Besides, music is a pwerful cue (提示) fr calling up strng persnal memries — when yu made a new friend at the summer camp r the blue dress yu wre t a party. And the human brain remembers music in great detail, unlike spken wrds, in which peple remember just the general meaning.
The 1960s music may evke strng memries in peple in their twenties because f the quality, Krumhansl guesses. She thinks the students might have memries f the 1960s music because it lives n as classics. Technlgy may als be a factr. The intrductin f cassette tapes in the 1960s made music mre ubiquitus (普遍存在的), and the same tapes were played lng after that decade ended.
Next, Krumhansl wants t find ut if ther generatins have the same experiences with music, and try t trace influences back thrugh multiple generatins.
