Arund ne millin cuneifrm tablets (楔形文字泥板) have been fund wrldwide, n which cuneifrm — the ldest knwn frm f writing — was carved. Deciphering (破译) thse cuneifrm tablets helps knw abut the incredible stries f men, wmen and children in the early perid f histry. Hwever, they are heavily weathered and thus difficult t decipher.
A new artificial intelligence (AI) sftware is nw able t explain difficult-t-read texts. It was develped by a team frm Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and Mainz University f Applied Sciences.
Hubert Mara, a prfessr at MLU, and his research team came up with the idea f develping an AI system that applied 3D mdels. Instead f phts, the researchers first used 3D mdels f nearly 2,000 cuneifrm tablets, including arund 50 frm a cllectin at MLU, achieving significantly mre dependable results than previus methds.
The new system deciphers characters better than previus methds. In principle, the AI system wrks alng the same lines as OCR sftware, which turns the images f writing and text int machine-readable text. “OCR usually wrks with phtgraphs. This is n prblem fr ink n paper. In the case f cuneifrm tablets, hwever, things are mre difficult because the lighting cnditins greatly influence hw well certain characters can be recgnized,” explains Mara.
The team trained the new AI sftware and did succeed in recgnizing the symbls n the tablets. “We were surprised t find that ur system wrks s well with these tablets, which are heavily weathered,” says Mara.
The wrk by the researchers makes a majr step frward in the study f ancient writing systems and pens up many new lines f scientific explratin. Up until nw, it can nly translate symbls frm tw languages. Hwever, a ttal f twelve cuneifrm languages are knwn t exist.
