Street markers serve t create a sense f safety, but in fact, they actually make rads less safe because drivers tend t feel that they d nt need t pay as much attentin if they have signs and markers telling them what t d. Remving markers creates an ambiguus envirnment fr drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, causing them t pay mre attentin t their surrundings and requiring them t interact mre with each ther by making eye cntact mre ften. In effect, making streets appear t be mre dangerus actually makes them safer, creating a cperative balance amng the users.
Since the plan was carried ut, it has brught psitive results. One twn in England that recently remved white lines frm rads saw a 35 percent decrease in the rate f accidents and a 5 percent drp in average driving speed. First intrduced in the 1970s in the Netherlands, where they are still cmmn, living streets can als be fund in Germany, Denmark, and Switzerland, and they are becming mre ppular thrughut Eurpe and America. Arund ne millin cuneifrm tablets (楔形文字泥板) have been fund wrldwide, n which cuneifrm — the ldest knwn frm f writing — was carved. Deciphering (破译) thse cuneifrm tablets helps knw abut the incredible stries f men, wmen and children in the early perid f histry. Hwever, they are heavily weathered and thus difficult t decipher.
A new artificial intelligence (AI) sftware is nw able t explain difficult-t-read texts. It was develped by a team frm Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and Mainz University f Applied Sciences.
Hubert Mara, a prfessr at MLU, and his research team came up with the idea f develping an AI system that applied 3D mdels. Instead f phts, the researchers first used 3D mdels f nearly 2,000 cuneifrm tablets, including arund 50 frm a cllectin at MLU, achieving significantly mre dependable results than previus methds.
The new system deciphers characters better than previus methds. In principle, the AI system wrks alng the same lines as OCR sftware, which turns the images f writing and text int machine-readable text. “OCR usually wrks with phtgraphs. This is n prblem fr ink n paper. In the case f cuneifrm tablets, hwever, things are mre difficult because the lighting cnditins greatly influence hw well certain characters can be recgnized,” explains Mara.
The team trained the new AI sftware and did succeed in recgnizing the symbls n the tablets. “We were surprised t find that ur system wrks s well with these tablets, which are heavily weathered,” says Mara.
The wrk by the researchers makes a majr step frward in the study f ancient writing systems and pens up many new lines f scientific explratin. Up until nw, it can nly translate symbls frm tw languages. Hwever, a ttal f twelve cuneifrm languages are knwn t exist. In the future, the sftware culd als help t decipher weathered inscriptins (碑文), fr example in cemeteries, which are three-dimensinal like cuneifrm.
12. What d we-knw abut cuneifrm tablets?
A. They are greatly damaged ver time.B. They recrd many prehistric stries.
C. They shw big prgress in writing.D. They are quite small in number.
13. What is special abut the new AI system?
A. It uses OCR sftware.B. It is based n 3D mdels.
C. It can translate 12 languages.D. It can turn texts int symbls.
14. What impressed Mara during the research?
A. The difficulty in saving cuneifrm tablets.
B. The discvery f a new writing system.
C. The achievements in cmputer science.
D. The effectiveness f the new AI system.
15. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
A. 3D mdels are useful in researches
B. OCR sftware deciphered cuneifrm
C. AI sftware helps read ancient symbls
D. Scientists use AI t find cuneifrm tablets
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

【13题详解】推理判断题。根据第三段“Instead f phts, the researchers first used 3D mdels f nearly 2,000 cuneifrm tablets, including arund 50 frm a cllectin at MLU, achieving significantly mre dependable results than previus methds.(研究人员首先使用了近2000块楔形文字的3D模型,而不是照片,其中包括MLU收集的大约50块,获得了比以前的方法更可靠的结果)”可推知,新的AI系统的特别之处是它基于3D模型。故选B项。
【14题详解】推理判断题。根据第五段““We were surprised t find that ur system wrks s well with these tablets, which are heavily weathered,” says Mara.(玛拉说:“我们惊讶地发现,我们的系统在这些风化严重的平板电脑上运行得如此之好。”)”可知,在研究过程中,系统在这些风化严重的平板电脑上运行得如此之好。由此推知,给玛拉留下了深刻的印象的是新人工智能系统的有效性。故选D项。
【15题详解】主旨大意题。根据第二段“A new artificial intelligence (AI) sftware is nw able t explain difficult-t-read texts. (一种新的人工智能(AI)软件现在能够解释难以阅读的文本)”可知,本文主要介绍了人工智能软件帮助阅读古代符号的事情。故选C项。
