The Luvre is the mst ppular museum in the wrld. Last year, abut 10 millin visitrs, mre than 75% f whm were freign turists, came t the museum. Abut 80% f them were here fr Mna Lisa-and mst f them left unhappy.
Accrding t a survey f British turists earlier this year, Mna Lisa was vted the wrld’s mst disappinting attractin, beating ut Checkpint Charlie, Spanish Steps, and Urinating By in Brussels.
If the museum thinks that it is inspiring the next generatin f art lvers, it is in fact ding the ppsite, thanks t the huge crwds in frnt f the picture. The vercrwding here was s bad that Jean-Luc Martinez, the museum’s directr, has t admit, “We have t take steps t deal with the vercrwding in the cming years: new entrances and timed tickets fr the museum.”
He misunderstands the prblem-fr the Luvre, with mre gallery space than any museum n the planet, isn’t that crwed. On my last visit, the French painting wing had just a few visitrs. Even Venus de Mil, perhaps the secnd mst famus wrk f art in the museum, nly drew a cmfrtable few dzen visitrs. In ther wrds, the Luvre des nt have an vercrwding prblem. It has a Mna Lisa prblem. N ther famus painting cmes anywhere clse t mnplizing (垄断) a museum like she des. It is time fr the Luvre t admit its failure. The museum des nt need new entrances r timed tickets.
Instead, it nly needs t set up a mving walkway in frnt f Mna Lisa and let Samsung r anther smartphne cmpany t fix its cutest cameras arund her. S visitrs can strike a pse n the mving walkway, and dwnlad their cutest selfies (自拍像) with Mna Lisa later. I can even picture the mving walkway smthly guiding turists past the Mna Lisa int the gift shps, where millins f selfiers can take time t enjy their pictures, and spend mney.
It is time t set it up nw since the 2024 Summer Olympics is arund the cmer.

If yu were asked t imagine a scientist, what image wuld cme t yur mind? The idea that mst f the kids have is a man wearing a white lab cat with messy hair, big glasses, and cups f clurful liquids giving ff cluds f smke. As fr adults, the majrity regard scientists as strange peple wh spend a lt f time wrking in a lnely lab. Hwever, the reality is quite different.
Recently I've had a chance t take part in a scientific experience far frm my lab and int Csta Rica. It has a large amunt f wildlife due t its gegraphical placement between Nrth and Suth America. It is hme t mre than 500,000 species, which represents nearly 4% f the species wrldwide!
First we wrked t prtect wildlife at a leatherback turtle (棱皮龟) prtectin centre. We helped the vlunteers t remve rubbish frm the beach t create a safe envirnment fr turtle eggs t cme ut. After that we stayed at Munt Arenal where we studied seismic (地壳的) activity relating t earthquakes. During ur stay at Arenal, we rde ver the muntainus areas and tk a lng walk thrugh the rainfrest. On the last day we gt a prfessinal intrductin f rcket science and learned abut new rcket technlgy that will be used n the internatinal space statin.
During my Csta Rica experience, I knw that being a scientist desn't mean wrking in a lab all day and night. There will be mre plastic than fish in the wrld's ceans by 2050. That is what a new reprt frm the Wrld Ecnmic Frum and Ellen MacArthur Fundatin warns. If the current trend cntinues, the reprt said, ceans will cntain ne tn f plastic fr every three tns f fish in 2025. By 2050, plastics will weigh mre than fish. The prblem is that each year at least 8 millin tns f plastics end up in ceans arund the wrld. This is the same as dumping the cntents f ne garbage truck int the cean every minute.
Nt all plastic ends up in the cean because smene thrws a plastic bttle int the water. Plastic cntainers and ther trash thrwn nt streets and sidewalks ften are swept int ceans. Unlike ther types f trash in the cean, the plastic never bidegrades. There is a way t slw the amunt f plastics ging int the ceans—peple can recycle mre. Currently nly abut 14 percent f plastics are recycled. Research in Eurpe shws as much as 53 percent f plastic culd be recycled using available technlgy. The reprt says that anther slutin is using less plastic fr packaging prducts. But that is nt likely t happen.
“Given the benefits f plastic packaging, bth the pssibility and desirability f an acrssthebard dramatic reductin in the vlume f plastic packaging used is clearly lw,” the reprt said. But the authrs nte reducing the use f plastics shuld be tried “where pssible”. Fr decades, scientists warned that plastics are killing fish. Research shws that fish are dying frm chking after eating plastics. Anther cause f death is that plastics cause “intestinal blckage and starvatin,” the envirnmental grup said.
32.Why is the garbage truck mentined in Paragraph 1?
