“I never imagined myself being a business wner r a bss, but if there is a prblem that needs a slutin, why nt give it a try,” she says. Rulli’s cmpany, The Thught, ffers a large selectin f greeting cards. Frm adptin cngratulatins t “Just Because”, there is smething fr every ccasin. Thrugh this, her cmpany, The Thught, was brn. Shppers can find different cards, (stamp included) in her nline stre. They can als select frm a lt f add-ns, such as handwritten ntes, cash, r gift cards. It was a quiet early afternn in the library, and we librarians were enjying a chat at the library desk. Suddenly, a regular reader, wh had been reading a magazine, marched up t us, gave us an annyed “Shush (嘘)!” and went back t her seat.
Shcked int silence, we tried nt t laugh. Hw strange fr a grup f librarians t be shushed by a reader! Shuldn’t it be the ther way arund?
Well, it seems hard t explain. If yu’re a baby bmer (婴儿潮出生的人) like me, yu prbably remember libraries as places f adults’ silent reading. These days, hwever, libraries are mre like busy cmmunity centers, where being nisy t sme degree is the new nrmal, especially when kids are taking part.
I am a lud librarian. My vice is naturally n the luder side. The hundreds f prgrams I led as a children’s librarian were filled with singing, dancing, mvement exercises and cheerful readings f bks with crwds f children and their caregivers. N shushing allwed!
Grwing knwledge abut the imprtance f kids and teens learning thrugh hands-n experiences has since caused a sea change in hw public libraries cnnect with yung readers. These types f prgrams like bard games, petry reading and stry times certainly aren’t designed t be silent.
But it’s a balancing act. Nt all readers—r librarians—like the idea f a nisy library. It’s clear t me nw that n the day my clleagues and I were shushed by a reader, we shuld have been using ur “library vices” as we talked. Still, it’s unlikely that libraries will ever return t the days when they were places f silence. There’s just t much fun and learning happening. I heartily agree with my friend Rachel Payne, an early-childhd service educatr at the Brklyn Public Library, wh tld me, “When I visit a library and it is quiet, I always feel a bit depressed. A library where cnversatins are happening and tables are full is a very gd thing!”
28. Hw did the authr think f the shush frm a reader?
A. Unexpectedly funny.B. Really annying.
C. Quite necessary.D. Very heartwarming.

A. They serve kids nly.B. They becme quieter.
C. They are less ppular.D. They have different functins.

A. T make the end interesting.B. T intrduce a gd educatr.
C. T present the authr’s viewpint.D. T prmte a new reading methd.

A. It’s Necessary fr Librarians t Change.
B. It’s Acceptable fr a Library t Be Nisy.
C. Hw t Cnduct yurself in the Library?
D. Why Shuld We Keep Silent in the Library?
D

Mst f these tests were designed t last up t 40 minutes. The average gym-gers lasted 30 minutes. Fr this study, they divided 127 participants int tw grups. One listened t upbeat (快节奏) music, while the ther grup had ear buds in but did nt listen t music.
The grup that listened t music was able t utlast the nn-music grup by an average f 50.6 secnds. Again, being able t g an extra minute may seem like a n-brainer, but “after 30 minutes, yu feel like yu are running up a muntain, s even being able t g 50 secnds lnger means a lt,” said the study’s lead authr, Waseem Shami, MD.
