When I was nine, my best friend nearly chked t death n a gbstpper, a type f hard candy. After several attempts, she cughed up the candy. I haven’t had a gbstpper since and I have carried with me a fear f seeing that scene again. Sadly, as I discvered this week, lightning can strike twice.
I was getting ff a tube train in Lndn when I nticed a wman cughing. I slwed dwn, watching her carefully. I had learned that cughing is rarely a sign that smething is terribly wrng. Suddenly, the wman stpped cughing, her eyes widened and she bent ver.
When I went ver t ask if she was OK, she lked up at me, panicked, and pinted t her back. I started hitting her back and screaming fr help. Despite having watched a few vides, I was terrified that I wuldn’t be able t crrectly perfrm the Heimlich, a first-aid methd, and that I wuld have t walk away with guilt fr her death. But it was just the tw f us, alne at an undergrund statin; if I didn’t try t help, n ne wuld. Thankfully, much like with my friend, after a few sharp hits, whatever had been stuck in her thrat came lse. She thanked me, almst embarrassed, and walked up t the lift. I fllwed behind her, shaking, with tears in my eyes.
By the time we reached the lift, we had bth calmed dwn. She tk my hands and thanked me again, befre disappearing. She might have been fine withut my hurried hits n her back — I may nt have actually saved her life — but at least she knew that smene, a stranger whm she wuld never see again, cared.
This experience als taught me abut the bystander effect, where peple assume thers assumed t be available during an emergency, which leads t inactin. I get it: the fear f making things wrse, especially if yu have n medical training, is real. Research suggests that when a “medically cmpetent” persn is assumed t be available during an emergency, direct help frm thers is far less likely t ccur. Smetimes, thugh, regardless f wh else culd be nearby, it may be useful t get invlved. S it was with the cughing wman n the tube.

B.She walked the wman up t the lift.
C.She learned Heimlich frm her.

26.Which situatin can be described as the bystander effect?

B.Yu asked yur brther wh is a dctr t save a dying wman.
C.Yu avided invlvement when seeing an injured lady n the rad.

Advances in AI and machine learning have sparked interest frm gvernments that wuld like t use these tls fr patrlling (巡查) purpsefully befrehand t prevent crime. Hwever, early effrts at crime predictin have been cntrversial, because they d nt allw fr systematic biases (偏差) in plice enfrcement (实施) and its cmplex relatinship with crime and sciety.
University f Chicag (UC) data and scial scientists have develped a new algrithm (算法) that frecasts crime by learning patterns in time and gegraphic lcatins frm public data n vilent and prperty crimes. It has demnstrated success at predicting future crimes ne week in advance with apprximately 90% accuracy.
The new tl was tested and validated using histrical data frm the City f Chicag arund tw brad categries f reprted events: vilent crimes and prperty crimes.
The new mdel islates crime by lking at the time and spatial crdinates (坐标) f separate events and detecting patterns t predict future events. It divides the city int spatial sectins rughly 1,000 feet acrss and predicts crime within these areas instead f relying n traditinal neighbrhd r plitical bundaries, which are als subject t bias. The mdel perfrmed just as well with data frm seven ther US cities.
Ishanu Chattpadhyay, senir authr f the study, is careful t nte that the tl’s accuracy des nt mean that it shuld be used t direct law enfrcement, with plice departments using it t flck t neighbrhds ahead f time t stp crime. Instead, it shuld be added t a tlbx f urban plicies and plicing strategies t address crime.
“We created a digital twin f urban envirnments. If yu feed it data frm what happened in the past, it will tell yu what’s ging t happen in future. It’s nt magical; there are limitatins, but we tested it and it wrks well,” Chattpadhyay said. “Nw yu can use this as a mdel tl t see what happens if crime ges up in ne area, r there is increased enfrcement in anther area. If yu apply all these different data, yu can see hw the system evlves in respnse.”
28.What infrmatin wuld data and scial scientists in UC cllect?

C.Thefts and rbberies n the street.D.Deaths in traffic accidents.
29.What des the underlined wrd “validated” in Paragraph 3 mean?

C.The plice department can whlly rely n it t prevent criminals.
D.It can be f help when the authrity make plicies cncerning crimes.

One day, a snwstrm blanketed Washingtn, D.C., the whle city became a white wrld. When I awke, I immediately put n my warmest clthes and dashed utside. I wanted t build a snwman. Then I nticed I had audience — a cuple with cffee cups in their hands. My face flushed (脸红) with shame as I tried t cme up with an answer t their unspken questin: Dn’t yu have anything better t d?
A middle-aged wman playing by herself in the snw is an undubtedly dd sight, but maybe it shuldn’t be. Mdern adults are suffering frm excessive physical and emtinal stress. We’ve held back ur natural play instinct (本能), and that’s causing all kinds f prblems — fr urselves, ur children, and ur planet.
Playing suggests that smewhere, deep in ur evlutinary histry, a playful human came up with the cncept f stne tls. Even tday, the urge t play underlies mst f humanity’s greatest inventins, artwrks, and scientific breakthrughs. “When I interviewed Nbel Prize winners, I was struck by hw mst f them didn’t separate wrk and play. Their labs were their playgrunds,” says Stuart Brwn, a play researcher.
While bject play ccasinally results in direct applicatins, it has a mre general benefit as well, says animal behavirist Marc Bekff. “Mst frms f play are abut preparing fr the unexpected by expanding yur behaviral skills.” When animals play by themselves — such as gats jumping arund and intentinally landing awkwardly — they learn tw lessns: Hw t recver frm missteps and, mre generally, hw t remain calm when things g sideways.
When it cmes t humans, as we fully transitin t a knwledge-based ecnmy, wrk and play are beginning t cmbine again. Sme f tday’s mst successful cmpanies were started by peple running small business in their garages. Organizatins like these understand the value f encuraging adults t play. In many cases, peple aren’t needed fr rutine, bring tasks any mre. “Yu need passinate peple wh can invent new things, wh can think f new ways f ding things,” Brwn says.
The next time I’m caught playing, I knw exactly what I’ll say: “I am nt wasting time r acting immature. I’m playing fr the benefit f all humanity. Yu’re welcme.”
32.Why des the authr mentin his wn experience in the beginning?
A.T present a fact.B.T describe a scene.
C.T clarify a cncept.D.T intrduce a tpic.
33.What can be inferred frm the third paragraph?
A.Mdern adults are free t act n their instincts.
B.Play is the driving pwer behind human prgress.
C.Humans make scientific breakthrughs by playing.
D.Nbel Prize winners ften separate wrk frm play.
34.What qualities d cmpanies mst need in the knwledge-based ecnmy era?
A.Teamwrk and hnesty.B.Leadership and empathy.
C.Innvatin and enthusiasm.D.Patience and determinatin.
35.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A.Adults shuld priritize playtimeB.Adults need t make time fr play
C.Play can expand and crrect behavirD.Play is the surce f human inventins

Hayes mapped ut the timeline f each cmpsers’ career. 39 What he discvered was that virtually every single “masterwrk” was written after the tenth year f the cmpser’s career. Nt a single persn prduced incredible wrk withut putting in a decade f practice first. Even a genius like Mzart had t wrk fr at least ten years befre he prduced smething that became ppular. 40
In fllw-up studies, Hayes fund similar patterns amng famus painters and ppular pets. These findings have been further cnfirmed by research frm prfessrs like K. Anders Ericssn, wh prduced research that revealed that yu needed t put in “10, 000 hurs” t becme an elite r expert in yur field.
