2.Heman Bekele, a 14-year-ld student frm Virginia, has created a cheap sap that culd ptentially help fight skin cancer, which earned him the
title f America’s Tp Yung Scientist and a $25,000 cash prize after his innvatin wn first place in the 3M Yung Scientist Challenge n Octber 10,
    2023.
At age 4, Heman mved t America frm Ethipia, where he always saw peple cnstantly wrking under the ht sun. While he cnsidered ideas fr
the cmpetitin, it struck him that s many peple in his hmetwn were unaware f the risk f sun expsure. The recllectins fueled his decisin t
fcus his research n skin cancer.
In June 2023, he was selected as a tp-ten finalist and paired with 3M prduct engineering specialist Debrah Isabelle t develp and test a physical
prttype (原型) f his idea. It tk the pair fur mnths f trial and errr t create “Skin Cancer Treating Sap” (SCTS). The bar cntains chemicals that
restre the bdy’s dendritic cells (树突细胞) killed by cancer cells. Once recnstructed, dendritic cells, the bdy’s first line f defense against cancer and
infectins, are capable f fighting against cancer cells. SCTS, which csts just 50 cents a bar, still has t underg clinical trials. The prcess culd take ver
    five years.
While similar methds are available fr skin cancer treatments, his slutin is a mre affrdable alternative, especially fr thse in develping
cuntries. Thugh the prduct is very prmising n paper, studies wuld have t be carried ut t test its efficiency in the real wrld.

“I applied fr the 3M Yung Scientist Challenge because I believe that yung minds can make a psitive impact n the wrld,” Bekele said. “I have
always been interested in bilgy and technlgy, and this challenge gave me the perfect platfrm t shwcase my ideas. The pprtunity t wrk with
3M experts and shw my prject t judges was an exciting prspect (前景). I am passinate abut finding sustainable slutins t glbal prblems, and I
hpe t inspire thers t d the same.”

3.The wrld’s ppulatin cast aside 49 millin tns f electrnic waste, knwn as e-waste. It has been calculated that this number will grw t mre
than 60 millin tns by 2023.
What is causing the upsurge (激增) in e-waste? Technlgy is becming mre and mre widespread, cvering almst every aspect f ur lives.
Meanwhile, the lifespan f devices is getting shrter—many prducts will be thrwn away nce their batteries die, t be replaced by new devices.
Cmpanies intentinally plan the bslescence (过时) f their gds by updating the design r sftware and discntinuing supprt fr lder mdels, s
that nw it is usually cheaper and easier t buy a new prduct than t repair an ld ne. Since prices are falling, electrnic devices are in demand arund
    the wrld.
As mre peple buy electrnic equipment, manufacturers (制造商) are beginning t face shrtages f the raw materials needed t make their
prducts, s recycling and reusing materials frm discarded (扔掉的) prducts and waste makes ecnmic and envirnmental sense.
Recycling e-waste is practiced bth frmally and infrmally. Prper r frmal e-waste recycling usually invlves taking apart the electrnics, srting
thrugh the materials and cleaning them. Cmpanies must bey health and safety rules t reduce the health and envirnmental hazards f handling e-
waste by using pllutin-cntrl technlgies. All this makes frmal recycling expensive. Infrmal recycling is typically unlicensed and uncntrlled. At
infrmal recycling wrkshps, men and wmen recver valuable materials by burning devices t melt away nn-valuable materials. Usually they d nt
wear prtective equipment and lack any awareness that they are handling dangerus materials.
With the amunt f e-waste grwing arund the wrld, recycling alne will nt be enugh t slve the prblem. In rder t reduce e-waste,
manufacturers need t design electrnics that are safer, and mre durable (耐用的), repairable and recyclable. The best thing yu can d is resist buying a
new device until yu really need it. Try t get yur ld prduct repaired if pssible and, if it can’t be fixed, resell r recycle it respnsibly. Befre yu
recycle yur device, put any brken parts in separate cntainers and clse these tightly t prevent chemicals frm leaking. Wear latex (乳胶) glves and a
mask if yu’re handling smething that’s brken.
【小题1】Which f the fllwing is a reasn fr e-waste’s sharp increasing?
    A.The results f updating devices.
    B.The falling f devices’ quality.
    C.The methds f recycling e-waste.
    D.The shrtage f prtective equipment.
【小题2】What makes recycling e-waste meaningful accrding t the text?
A.Increasing the variety f electrnic prducts.
B.Lwering the csts f technlgy innvatin.
C.Relieving the lack f the raw materials.
    D.Imprving the pr quality f e-devices.
【小题3】What is the meaning f the underlined wrd “hazards” in paragraph 4?
    A.Influence. B.Limits.
【小题4】What des the authr want t cnvey in the last paragraph?
    C.Harm.
    D.Csts.

A.E-waste culd be brken dwn by burying it undergrund fr a lng time.
B.Cmpanies shuld be mainly respnsible fr reducing e-waste.
C.Fixing a device culd cause mre pllutin than buying a new ne.
    D.Everyne shuld take actin t reduce e-waste.
4.There is n dubt that when yu receive a cmpliment, yu feel gd and when yu receive a criticism, yu feel upset and want t refuse it.
Yu shuldn’t be surprised by yur reactin t the negative cmment, as it’s human’s survival mechanism t avid being criticized. Clearly, we
dn’t want t be seen as failures, s we’d rather shut ur eyes and cver ur ears than have t take any criticisms frm thers.
Imagine yu’re learning t play the guitar, and yu have just dne yur first public perfrmance. Yur teacher says, “Yu did well,” which may nt
be as useful in helping yu imprve yur perfrmance skills as “Yur timing needs sme wrk.” S I believe that criticisms are better than
    cmpliments.
N ne wuld argue that healthy nutritin is a bad thing. Hwever, t much fd r drink — n matter hw healthy they may be — can make us ill.
T many cmpliments take us away frm ur riginal enthusiasm f enjying an activity. We start ding the activity nly fr the sake f receiving self-
satisfying praise. Withut the expectatin f praise, ur enthusiasm t cmplete things begins t be lst.
Launched in 2010, Micrsft KIN nly lasted n the market fr 48 days. It was very bvius that mst 15 t 30-year-lds preferred Andrids,
BlackBerrys and iPhnes t the Micrsft KIN. If criticism and feedback frm the target grup had been received while the phne was in develpment,
Micrsft KIN culd have avided the huge embarrassment and its final failure.
Just t be clear, I’m talking abut cnstructive criticism, which I like t think f as “healthy criticism”. The right kind f criticism is hnest feedback
that will benefit yu. Feedback frces yu t recnsider yur actins and the way yu wrk. If yu use cnstructive criticism wisely, it can guide yu away
frm bad practices, giving yu supprt and curage t mve frward t be a better persn in the future.

    B.Mre satisfied.
    C.Less wrried.
    D.Less interested.
【小题3】Hw can healthy criticism be helpful accrding t the last paragraph?
    A.T encurage grwth.
    B.T develp intelligence.
    D.T reduce enthusiasm.
    C.T avid embarrassment.
【小题4】What is a suitable title fr the passage?
    A.Criticisms are better than cmpliments.
B.Cnstructive criticism cntributes t better future.
C.Hnest feedback cmes frm healthy criticism.
D.Enugh enthusiasm is vital fr further develpment.
