Scientists have taken pictures f a star that is farther away than any single star ever seen. They were nly able t see the star because gravity made it lk bigger. The star, which has been called Icarus, is nine billin light years away. A light year is a very lng distance — abut 6 trillin miles. That’s hw far light can travel in ne year in space.
Icarus was created when the universe was very yung. The star was a blue “supergiant” — much bigger and brighter than the sun. It tk the light frm the star abut 9 billin years t reach the earth. It may seem strange, but the star is nt even there any mre. Actually, the light it made is still traveling thrugh space.
Patrick Kelly wrked with ther scientists and NASA t spt the star. They used a telescpe(望远镜) that NASA had put int space, called the Hubble Space Telescpe. Mr. Kelly said, “This star is at least 100 times farther away than the next star we can study.” Icarus was s far away that the scientists needed mre than just the Hubble Telescpe t spt it.
The scientists were able t see the star because f gravity. Gravity desn’t just pull things tward each ther; it can als bend(使弯曲) light. When the light gets bent, it can make things lk bigger. Scientists call this gravitatinal lensing.
Smething really big was needed t magnify(放大) a star s far away — smething even bigger than a galaxy! A galaxy is a huge grup f stars. It was a whle grup f galaxies that bent the light s that Icarus was big enugh t see. The grup f galaxies made it lk 2,000 times bigger.
Scientists are excited abut a new space telescpe that NASA is planning. They hpe that it may help them see Icarus better.

Anther reasn is that, in the right cntext, fish stand fr gd luck. The Chinese wrds fr “fish” and “plenty” have the same prnunciatin, and a fish, eaten n the eve f the lunar new year, represents a wish fr plenty f gd things t cme. Therefre, enugh fish shuld be cked t ensure leftvers, which mean hpes fr abundance in the year ahead.
Such lucky dishes are nt unique t Asians. On New Year’s Day in America, black sutherners have been eating Hppin’ Jhn, a delicius dish f rice and black-eyed beans(豆), cked with salted prk r smked ham (interest in African-American culture has made the recipe ppular elsewhere). The beans symblize cins, and the greens that are usually served as well stand fr dllar bills. Sme peple even put a clean cin in the pt. Whever gets it n their plate will enjy a lt f gd luck.
Diverse as these dishes are, they all represent hpes fr gd frtune. Fish, beans and greens are neither cstly nr extrardinary, suggesting that luck is nt smething bught expensively r sught with difficulty. Gd frtune, they suggest, lies all arund, and is always within reach.
Whether anyne actually believes in the relatinship between eating these fds and receiving the prmised benefits is unclear. Mainly, these fd traditins cntinue fr the same reasn that ther traditins d: Peple have fnd memries f celebrating them with their parents, and want t pass them dwn t their wn children.
8. What des the underlined wrd “abundance” in paragraph 2 refer t?
