Peple knw animals d have feelings, but they are nt sure if these feelings are crrectly understd. In recent years, scientists have dne research abut the feelings f cws, frgs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy r sad by listening t its calls.
The researchers put a bwl behind a dr. Inside the bwl, smetimes, there was smething chickens lve t eat, such as rice r insects. Smetimes, there was nthing. When the chickens saw fd behind the dr, they seemed happy and prduced fast and lud sunds, knwn as fd calls. When there wasn’t fd, the chickens made lw and lng nises t express disappintment. The researchers recrded all these sunds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chse 16 recrdings f such chicken nises. Half were frm the chickens seeing the fd and half were frm the chickens finding n fd. The recrdings were played t 194 vlunteers. Sixty-nine percent f the vlunteers crrectly understd whether the chickens were feeling happy r nt, and sme f them even had n experience f taking care f chickens.
The result shws that humans have the natural ability t understand the feelings f chickens. Hpefully, this finding can bring abut new technlgy t help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many cuntries. Reading a gd bk is a wnderful jurney because the reader can live in smene else’s wrld fr a while. Reading tgether with thers, knwn as buddy (同伴) reading, will make this jurney even mre fantastic. During the jurney, the buddies spend time ding a lt f reading activities. This nt nly adds t the pleasure f reading, but als deepens their understanding f the bks.
Althugh it is all right t have students jin in buddy reading with same-aged schlmates, schls usually pair up lder students with yunger nes. In 2021, Green Schl started such a prgram and has achieved a great success.
Bth yunger and lder readers in this schl have learned a lt frm this tw-year, prgram. Fr example, when they listened t each ther, they learned t be kind and patient. This experience als prvided them with a chance t practice lifelng skills such as exercising leadership r cmmunicating with thers.
