I live in Xizhu in Yunnan Prvince, n the histric Tea Hrse Rad. I have t admit that when I first heard that Paul Salpek was ging t walk the
entire glbe n his wn tw feet, I was blwn away. I culdn’t imagine that there culd be such an unusual persn in the wrld.
Last May, I met Paul. He tld me that it was his first time in China. He talked t me with great excitement abut the histry, migratins, and
discveries in my regin f China. He spke f the Shu-Yandu Da (the Suthern Silk Rad), the travels f the 17th-century Chinese explrer Xu Xiake,

a sense Chinese pineers f slw jurnalism.
I decided t accmpany Paul n his walk tward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set ut. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We
wke up at sunrise, set ff in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging urselves int exhausted sleep.
We met many peple n the rad. Sme were curius, surrunding us and watching us; sme gave us directins; sme invited us int their hme t
take a rest; sme spke f the charm f their hmetwn. We met many beautiful suls, simple suls and warm suls. We were walking with ur minds.
Tgether, we were impressed by the bidiversity f the Galigng Muntains. As I walked n ancient paths thrugh muntains, I seemed t hear the
antique vices f past travelers urging me t be careful n the rad.
Lking back n the mre than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came t a realizatin. Walking fr its wn sake, while healthy and admirable, is nly a

An 85-year-ld primary schl cnstructed in 1935 in Shanghai has been lifted ff the grund in its entirety and relcated using new technlgy
called the “walking machine.” The prject marks the first time this “walking machine” methd has been used in Shanghai t relcate a histrical

Urbanizatin(都市化)has cntinued t significantly threaten architectural heritage. In the capital Beijing, fr instance, mre than 1,000 acres f its
histric hutngs and traditinal curtyard hmes were destryed between 1990 and 2010.
In the early 2000s, cities including Nanjing and Bejjing-due t the critics’ prtest abut the lss f ld neighbrhds-drew up lng-term plans t
preserve what was left f their histric sites, with prtectins intrduced t safeguard buildings and restrict develpers.
These cnservatin effrts have taken different frms. In Beijing, a near-ruined temple was transfrmed int a restaurant and gallery, while in
Nanjing, a cinema frm the 1930s was restred t its riginal frm, with sme additins prviding it fr mdern use. In 2019, Shanghai welcmed Tank
Shanghai, an arts center built in renvated(重修的)il tanks.
“Relcatin is nt the first chice, but better than destrying,” said Lan, the Shanghai primary schl’s prject supervisr. “I’d rather nt tuch
the histrical buildings at all.” Building relcatins he said hwever, are “a wrkable ptin.” “The central gvernment is putting mre emphasis n

19th-century “shikumen” (r “stne gate”) huse have ffered examples f hw t give ld buildings new life.

Mst peple can remember experiencing such a state. Yur mind wasn't wandering; yu were ttally fcused and cncentrated n that activity, t
such an extent that yu were nt even aware f yurself. Psychlgists call these fully absrbing experiences flw states, which were discvered and

The state f flw happens under very specific cnditins-when we encunter a challenge that is testing fr ur skills, and yet ur skills and capacities

challenges exceed skills, ne can becme anxius. If skills exceed challenges, we usually becme bred. Neither f these tw cases result in flw.
What is als interesting in flw is the almst ttal absence f emtins during the actual prcess. One seems t be almst beynd experiencing
emtins, mst likely because the awareness f self is nt present. Mihaly himself is als very much aware f the ptential negative impact f the flw.

Shrieking Tad (尖叫的蛤蟆) and Dancing Ant

A bunch f us campers were n ur first nature walk. When we brke fr lunch, we sat dwn n lgs. I was n my third handful f trail mix (混合干果)
when a tree frg drpped nt my shirt frm the branches abve. I shrieked. It was ttally uncnscius and I didn’t even knw I culd make a sund
like that. Mst kids frgt abut it except Stan. Whenever I walked by, he’d shut, “Shrieking Tad, shw us hw yu can hp (跳)!” I crrected him
that it had been an eastern gray tree frg, nt a tad, but that just made things wrse.
Three days later, Cunselr Matt annunced we wuld be paired fr a treasure hunt. Excited whispers spread thrugh the camp. But when he read
“Jay and Stan” as a team, my nerves gt cmpletely fried. Stan shuted, “Great! Shrieking Tad!” Then he called t the grup, and I went red at what
came ut f his muth. “Guys, if msquites are bthering yu, ask Shrieking Tad t eat them. Tads lve bugs (虫子)!” Kids rared with laughter.
After all the teams wandered ff, Stan and I were alne. Then I had a great idea, surprising myself that I hadn’t thught f it earlier. I suggested we

“ Seeing him scratching (抓挠) at his bdy and hitting at his clthes made me realize what he was really saying: ”Ants! Ants!“

That night, we all rutinely sat arund the campfire and I saw Stan’s wrry as clear as daylight.
