Althugh tys’ packaging says it’s educatinal, it desn’t make it s. That’s the finding frm a new study in JAMA Pediatrics that fund sme tys being marketed as language prmters gt in the way f learning.

“When there’s smething else that’s ding sme talking, the parents seem t be sitting n the sidelines and letting the ty talk fr them and respnd fr them,” Ssa says. “That’s bad because the best way a ty can prmte language in infants and tddlers is by stimulating interactin between parent and child. There’s simply n evidence that a yung child can learn language directly frm a ty. It isn’t respnsive enugh. It isn’t scial.”
As fr the ther tys, traditinal blcks and puzzles stimulated mre cnversatin than the electrnic tys, and bks utscred them all. But dn’t underestimate the humble blck. While traditinal tys fell shrt f bks in interactin quantity, Ssa ntes, they kept pace in terms f quality.
