Althugh tys’ packaging says it’s educatinal, it desn’t make it s. That’s the finding frm a new study in JAMA Pediatrics that fund sme tys being marketed as language prmters gt in the way f learning.
Research shws that fr kids t understand, speak and eventually read r write a language, they need t hear it—lts f it. And it’s never t early fr parents and caregivers t get talking. That explains the bming industry in talking electrnic tys that claim t help kids learn language.
Prfessr Anna Ssa, f Nrthern Arizna University, led the study and says she gave families three different kinds f tys t play with: bks, traditinal tys like humble blcks and a shape srter, and electrnic tys. Ssa says she picked thse tys because they are advertised in their packaging as languageprmters fr babies between the ages f 10 and 16 mnths.
“We had a talking n farmanimal names and things,” Ssa says f the electrnic tys. “We had a baby cell phne. And we had a baby laptp. S yu pen the cver and start pushing buttns, and it tells yu things. The parentchild cuples were asked t play separately with each type f ty ver the curse f three days.”
“When there’s smething else that’s ding sme talking, the parents seem t be sitting n the sidelines and letting the ty talk fr them and respnd fr them,” Ssa says. “That’s bad because the best way a ty can prmte language in infants and tddlers is by stimulating interactin between parent and child. There’s simply n evidence that a yung child can learn language directly frm a ty. It isn’t respnsive enugh. It isn’t scial.”
As fr the ther tys, traditinal blcks and puzzles stimulated mre cnversatin than the electrnic tys, and bks utscred them all. But dn’t underestimate the humble blck. While traditinal tys fell shrt f bks in interactin quantity, Ssa ntes, they kept pace in terms f quality.
28.What is the finding f the research led by Prfessr Anna Ssa?
    A. Ty industry is facing new challenges in marketing.
    B. Kids shuld be taught t learn with tys as early as pssible.
    C. Peple might be misled by the statements f sme ty makers.
    D. Parents need t be cautius when chsing tys fr their kids.
    29. Accrding t the passage, why are talking electrnic tys s ppular?
    A. Because they represent the latest creatins.
    B. Because they aruse the interest in learning.
    C. Because they are used as an educatinal tl.
    D. Because they are easy fr the kids t cntrl.
30.We can infer frm the passage that it is necessary fr the parents t ________.
    A. share their experiences f reading with their kids
    B. spare mre time t stay with their kids at hme
    C. encurage their kids t attend scial activities
    D. get invlved in the cnversatins with their kids

    C. It can wrk tgether with a variety f Braille lines.
    D. It can pull ut the subtitles and visual descriptins.
34.What des the authr think f the future f the new technlgy?
    A. Challenging. B. Bright. C. Rewarding. D. Hpeless.
