T better understand the cean’s verall health, researchers hpe t utilize sme simplest creatures as tls t assess aquatic ecsystems. All they need is stunning $20 wrth f materials, a 3D-printer, and sme natural jellyfish.
Althugh it’s extremely dangerus, technlgically challenging, and expensive fr humans t reach the cean’s deepest regins, jellyfish d it all the time. Jellyfish first began dancing thrugh Earth’s ancient ceans at least half a billin years ag, making them sme f the planet’s ldest creatures. In all that time, hwever, their bilgical appearance has remained pretty cnsistent—a bell-shaped, brainless head attached t a mass f tentacles (触须), all f which is cmpsed f arund 95 percent water. Unfrtunately, that same steady state can’t be said f their habitat, thanks t humanity’s nging envirnmental impacts. “Since they dn’t have a brain r the ability t sense pain, we’ve been able t cperate with biethicists t develp this bihybrid rbtic applicatin in a way that’s ethically principled,” a lead researcher f this study, Jhn Dabiri said in a recent prfile.
Previusly, Dabiri’s lab implanted jellyfish with a kind f electrnic pacemaker that cntrls the speed at which they swim. This time, the team went a step further, adding what they call a frebdy t the jellyfish. It is like a hat that sits n tp f the jellyfish’s bell. This 3D-printed, hat-like additin nt nly huses electrnics and sensrs, but makes its wearer even faster. In a specially built, three-stry vertical aquarium, a jellyfish equipped with a cmbinatin f the swimming pacemaker and frebdy can swim up t 4.5 times faster than its all-natural cunterpart.
“It’s well knwn that the cean is critical fr determining ur present and future climate n land, and yet, we still knw surprisingly little abut the cean, especially away frm the surface,” Dabiri said. “Our gal is t finally mve that needle by taking an uncnventinal apprach inspired by ne f the few animals that already successfully explres the entire cean.”By cntrlling their jellies’ vertical ascent and descent, Dabiri’s team believes the bihybrids culd help gather deep cean data previusly btainable nly by using extremely price y research vessels and equipment.
12. What made jellyfish chsen fr the study?
A. Its cnsistent habitat.B. Its existence fr lng.
C. Its watery cmpsitin.D. Its insensibility t pain.
13. What des the underlined wrd “additin” in paragraph 3 refer t?
A. A frebdy.B. A pacemaker.
C. A hat-wearing jellyfish.D. A speed sensr.
14. What’s the rle f a natural jellyfish in the study?
A. A data cllectr.B. A device carrier.
C. A climate change predictr.D. The mdel f a rbtic applicatin.
15. What’s prbably the mst eye-catching advantage f this study?
A. Its ptential t explre the cean.B. Its rle in determining the climate.
