The wrld’s natins have prmised t limit glbal temperature increases t 1.5 degrees ver pre-industrial levels, which invlves shutting dwn fssil fuel extractin (化石燃料开采) as quickly as pssible. But despite this prmise, first reached six years ag during the Paris Climate Accrds, the fssil-fuel prducing natins are n track t extract mre than twice as much cal, il and natural gas as wuld be permissible under this plan, a new United Natins reprt says.
T have a chance f limiting temperature increases t 1.5 degrees, prductin f cal needs t drp by 11% every year between 2020 and 2030. while prductin f il and gas needs t drp by 4% and 3%, respectively, the reprt finds. Instead, prductin f il and gas is set t increase, while cal prductin is prjected t drp slightly.
The s-called prductin gap, the difference between cuntries’ climate prmises and their fssil fuel prductin plans — hasn’t changed since the United Natins first examined it in 2019, indicating that internatinal climate accrds are still clser t theretical prmises than detailed plans.
The reprt lks at fssil fuel prductin in 15 cuntries — including Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, the U.S. and the United Kingdm — hat are cllectively respnsible fr three-quarters f the wrld’s fssil fuel prductin. Mst f these cuntries have prmised t reach zer emissins by mid-century, but they are planning t increase their fssil fuel extractin until at least 2030.
S far, climate effrts frm majr fssil fuel extractrs, including industry, have “fcused n extracting fssil fuels in less-plluting ways, nt n winding dwn prductin levels in line with climate gals,” the reprt says. While these effrts, such as develping carbn-capture (碳捕捉) technlgy and reducing methane leaks (甲烷泄露) are imprtant. they fall far shrt f the changes science demands if glbal temperatures are t stay at a livable level.
T clse that gap, the reprt urges gvernments t make realistic plans fr winding dwn fssil fuel extractin, starting with state-wned cmpanies, which arc respnsible fr mre than half the wrld’s extractin f such fuels.
24.What des the new United Natins reprt say?

C.They shuld turn t the United Natins fr help.
D.They are n the way t breaking their prmises.

B.Gas statins run by private cmpanies.
C.Pwer plants wned by the gvernment.
D.Car factries run by private cmpanies.

As awareness f climate change grws, s des the desire t d smething abut it. But the scale f the prblems it causes—frm wildfires t melting glaciers t drughts—can seem utterly verwhelming. It can be hard t make a cnnectin between ur everyday lives and the survival f plar bears, let alne hw we as individuals can help turn the situatin arund.
One way t gain a quantifiable understanding f the impacts f ur actins, fr gd and bad, is thrugh what is knwn as a carbn ftprint. But while the cncept is gaining tractin, it is nt always fully understd. Accrding t Mike Berners-Lee, a prfessr at Lancaster University in the UK and authr f The Carbn Ftprint f Everything, it is “the sum ttal f all the greenhuse gas emissins that had t take place in rder fr a prduct t be prduced r fr an activity t take place.”
What steps a persn can take t reduce their persnal ftprint the mst f curse depends n the kind f lifestyle they presently live, and the same actins are nt equally effective fr everyne. Berners-Lee ntes that, “fr sme peple, flying may be 10 percent f their ftprint, fr sme peple it’s zer, and fr sme it’s such a huge number that it shuld be the nly thing they shuld be thinking abut.”
It isn’t easy t calculate a carbn ftprint and it has been claimed that the earliest such calculatr appeared in 2004 as part f the “Beynd Petrleum” campaign f il giant BP—a fact that causes sme bservers t criticize the pressure t reduce persnal carbn ftprints as a “sham” t “prmte the slant that climate change is nt the fault f an il giant, but that f individuals.”
“I wuld say persnal carbn ftprint calculatrs are a useful tl t assess the impact f yur immediate actins.” Berners-Lee says. “But what’s much mre imprtant than yur persnal carbn ftprint is yur climate shadw, which aims t paint a picture f the full sum f ne’s chices and the impact they have n the planet. Fr example, hw yu vte, where yu wrk, hw yu invest yur mney, and hw much yu talk abut climate change.
32.What des the underlined wrd “tractin” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
    A.attentinB.insightC.cntrlD.pwer
33.Hw des Berners-Lee explain his pinin accrding t paragraph 3?
    A.By presenting a factB.By making a cmparisn
    C.By clarifying a cnceptD.By giving suggestins
34.What is the bservers’ attitude t the “Beynd Petrleum” campaign f il giant BP?
    A.unclearB.favrableC.indifferentD.disapprving
35.What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
A.Tls are mre imprtant than chices.
B.Only individuals are respnsible fr climate change.
C.Climate shadw cvers a brad range f actins.
D.Calculating carbn ftprint is the mst effective.

The Shidawan Nuclear Pwer Plant, lcated in Rngcheng, Shandng Prvince, has fficially begun cmmercial peratins fllwing 61 successful 168-hur trial, as annunced by the Natinal Energy Administratin (NEA). This marks a significant milestne as it is the wrld's first furth-generatin (4G) nuclear pwer plant, utilizing high-temperature gas-cled nuclear reactr (HTGR) technlgy.
The plant, which basts China's fully independent intellectual prperty rights, shwcases the natin's prwess in 4G nuclear pwer technlgy. Accrding t Zhang Zuyi, the chief designer f the prject, the HTGR is designed t be inherently safe, even in the absence f cling capabilities and withut any interventin 62 (measure). This ensures 63 accidents such as reactr cre meltdwns r radiactive material releases are prevented.
In cmparisn t ther renewable energy surces like slar, wind, and hydr, nuclear pwer stands ut fr its stability and cst-effectiveness, as 64 (highlight) by Lin Bqiang, the directr f the China Center fr Energy Ecnmics Research at Xiamen University. This makes it a viable ptin fr China t achieve its carbn emissin 65 (reduce) gals.
The cnstructin f the 200,000-kilwatt plant, which 66 (start) in December 2012, was a cllabrative effrt between China Huaneng Grup C, Tsinghua University, and China Natinal Nuclear Crp. It was first cnnected t the pwer grid in December 2021, marking a significant step frward in the develpment f nuclear pwer technlgy.
The success f the plant is attributed t the cllabrative effrts f ver 500 cmpanies acrss the industry chain, including design, research and develpment, cnstructin, cmpnent manufacturing, and peratins management. With a lcalizatin rate f equipment exceeding 90%, this achievement underscres China's cmmitment t fster innvatin and technlgical advancement.
Based n this prject, China Huaneng Grup C and Tsinghua University have jintly develped six cre technlgies, nurtured a talented team f experts, and frmed a reprducible peratin mechanism with independent intellectual prperty rights. This nt nly demnstrates China's capabilities in nuclear pwer develpment but als 67 (pave) the way fr future cllabratin and innvatin in the field.
As China cntinues its effrts t achieve carbn emissin reductin gals, the installed capacity f renewable energy pwer generatin natinwide has reached a new high. By the end f Octber, it had exceeded 1.4 billin kilwatts, 68 (reach) 1.404 billin kilwatts, representing a year-n-year increase f 20.8%. This significant grwth accunts fr 69 (apprximate) 49.9% f the cuntry's ttal installed capacity f pwer generatin, further underscring the imprtance f renewable energy in China's energy mix.
With the successful cmmercial peratin f the Shidawan Nuclear Pwer Plant, China has nce again prven 70 (it) leadership in the glbal energy landscape and its cmmitment t sustainable develpment.
