Many years ag, my father, wh was 80 at the time, arrived fr his regular tw-week visit t my hme in Karachi.He lived with my elder brther in Lahre mst f the time and, fr ten years, had a habit f ging fr an hur-lng mrning walk t keep fit.In Lahre, he wuld walk arund a park near my brther’s huse.Naturally, he was keen t cntinue his mrning walk with us in Karachi.
Our preferred park is a 2 km walk frm my huse, and it has a 1 km walking track.Hwever, I culd nt drive him there every day as I had t leave fr the ffice when he wanted t g fr his walk.Since there were hardly any ftpaths in Karachi, my father said he was happy t walk n the rad as he was certain there wuldn’t be much traffic in the mrning.
I was less cnfident, s I suggested it wuld be safer if he changed his walk time t the evening.That way, I culd take him t the park after wrk.Hwever, my father – a determined persn – said that he culd nt change his rutine fr just a few days and insisted that he wuld leave the huse every day at 7 am and return by 8 am.He started ding this and stuck firmly t his schedule.S ne day, when he had nt returned by 8:30 am, my wife, Qaisa, phned me in a panic.Wrried, I immediately drve hme, taking the same rute my father wuld have taken fr his walk.
Nt sptting him anywhere, I went t the plice statin t reprt my father’s disappearance.The statin huse fficer advised me t wait until midnight befre filing the reprt.Since it was nly 10 am, I drve back t the park, hping t discver sme traces, but in vain.Ttally at a lss fr what t d next, I returned hme and waited impatiently, walking back and frth in the huse.
