The United Kingdm is hsting the AI Safety Summit, bringing pliticians, cmputer scientists and big AI cmpany leaders t a site chsen fr its symblism: Bletchley Park, the birthplace f cmputing and cde-breaking(密码破译).
During Wrld War II, a grup f mathematicians, chess masters and ther experts gathered at the Victrian cuntry huse 72 kilmeters nrthwest f Lndn t start a secret war against Nazi Germany. Their gal was t break a set f cnstantly changing cdes prduced by Nazi Germany's Enigma machine. T d it, Bletchley Park's wartime scientists-building n wrk dne by Plish cde-breakers-develped Clssus, the first prgrammable digital cmputer. Sme histrians say cracking the cde helped shrten the war by up t tw years.
"It has versimplified its true cntributin by describing Bletchley Park as a playgrund fr Turing and ther scientists," said histrian Chris Smith, authr f The Hidden Histry f Bletchley Park.
"Althugh it fits int the rmantic idea that a grup f smart men with a bit f wl and sme yards f wire can win the war. In fact, almst 10,000 peple wrked at Bletchley Park during the war. Three quarters f them were wmen. It's basically a hurs a day, seven days a week. When peace came, the cde-breakers returned t civilian life and prmised t keep secret abut their wartime wrk. It was nt until the 1970s that the wrk at Bletchley Park became widely knwn in Britain."
In 1994, the site pened as a museum, after lcal histrians banded tgether t prevent it frm being pulled dwn t build a supermarket. It was restred t its 1940s appearance, cmplete with ld typewriters, phnes and cups-including the ne tied t a heater in Hut 8, where Turing led the Enigma team.

It was an agnizing mment and all f a sudden, he realized why he gt free lunch while many f his classmates were paying fr their meals every day.
"It's nt like I was prer the day after that than I was befre. Nthing bjective had changed. But because f that subjective awareness, I began cnstantly cmparing myself with my classmates and felt really unhappy," he says.
Keith Payne is nw a scial psychlgist at the University f Nrth Carlina and shares hw the awareness f inequality affects the way that bth ur minds and ur bdies respnd.
"As we walk thrugh the wrld, it is very natural fr us t cmpare ur lives with thse f thers. We think abut urselves in terms f being n a certain ladder(梯子)with sme peple abve us and it can cause serius psychlgical cnsequences," he says.
One is that it makes us mre willing t seek ut risks and engage in high-risk, high-reward srt f behavirs. It affects us in ways that are similar t physical threats.
"But I think there are wiser and less wise ways t make thse scial cmparisns," he says. "Upward scial cmparisns feel terrible, but they can be mtivating. Dwnward scial cmparisns feel great, and yet they can be demtivating. S ne f the things I recmmend is that we can be mre strategic in making upward and dwnward scial cmparisns. The number f universities has grwn very fast in recent decades. Higher-educatin institutins acrss the wrld nw emply 15 millin researchers, up frm 4 millin in 1980. Gvernments are als happy t spend n higher educatin because it is suppsed t prduce scientific breakthrughs that can be available t all. In thery, therefre, universities shuld be an excellent surce f prductivity grwth.
In practice, hwever, the prductivity has slwed dwn during the last decades. In the 1950s and 1960s, wrkers' utput per hur acrss the rich wrld rse by 4% a year. But in the last decade, 1% a year was the nrm. Even with the wave f innvatin in artificial intelligence (AI), prductivity grwth remains weak—less than 1% a year, which is bad news fr ecnmic grwth.
A new paper by Ashish Arra and his team suggests that universities' rapid grwth and the rich wrld's slwdwn prductivity culd be tw sides f the same cin. The paper suggests that scientific breakthrughs frm public institutins "caused little r n respnse frm businesses" ver a number f years. A scientist in a university lab might publish brilliant paper after brilliant paper. Often, hwever, this has n impact n crpratins' wn patents, with life sciences being the exceptin. And this, in turn, pints t a small impact n the verall prductivity.
Why d cmpanies struggle t use ideas prduced by universities?
The paper says that, free frm the demands f the market, researchers in university labs fcus mre n satisfying their curisity than finding breakthrughs that will change the wrld r make mney. "T sme degree, such kind f research is nt a bad thing; sme breakthrugh technlgies, such as penicillin, were discvered almst by accident," it writes, "But if everyne is ding that, the ecnmy suffers."
Perhaps, with time, universities and the business wrld will wrk tgether mre tightly. Tugher cmpetitin culd frce businesses t beef up their internal research. In fact, researchers in cmpanies' labs, rather than universities, are driving the current AI innvatins. At sme pint, gvernments will need t ask themselves hard questins. In a wrld f weak ecnmic grwth, huge spending n universities may cme t seem an unjustifiable luxury.
12.What are the statistics in paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A.The weak ecnmy arund the glbe.
    B.Universities' cntributin t emplyment.
    C.Gvernments' spending n higher educatin.
D.The slw prductivity grwth in the rich wrld.
13.Which f the fllwing is benefiting frm university labs' breakthrughs?
    A.The investrs.B.The wrkers.C.Life sciences.D.AI industries.
14.What des the new paper imply abut the researchers in university labs?
A.They are very eager t make mre mney.
B.They are less cncerned abut applicatins.
C.They usually find breakthrughs by accident.
D.They shuld be left alne t d their research.
15.What is the best title fr the text?
A.A Study Suggests Universities Fail t Increase Prductivity
B.Universities and the Business Wrld May Wrk Tgether Sn
C.It Is Imprtant fr Cmpanies' Labs t Lead the AI Innvatin
D.It Is a Big Waste t Spend S Much Mney n Higher Educatin
