As a kid, Pamela Akuku spent her weekends explring the Natinal Museums f Kenya, fllwing alng with her mm wh wrked there. Akuku became fascinated with the researchers. Jsefa Marin went t New Yrk frm Mexic in 1987, supprting her daughter back hme with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factry. With that small incme, she had t cllect recyclables, trading in cans fr five cents each.

In New Yrk City, the administrative department cllects nly abut 28 percent f the cans that culd be recycled. Rubbish cllectrs, hwever, keep millins f additinal recyclables ut f landfills every year.
Yet cllectrs are ruled ut by gvernment plicies. The United States Supreme Curt in 1988 stated that husehld garbage is public prperty nce it's n the street. That enables plice t search rubbish fr evidence, but that prtectin hasn't always been extended t recyclers. And in places like New Yrk City, which is testing city-wned lcked cntainers t hide garbage frm rats, cntainers are made clearly inaccessible fr cllectrs.
"There's value in the waste, and we feel that value shuld belng t the peple, nt the city r the crpratins, says Ryan Castalia, directr f a nnprfit recycling and cmmunity center in Brklyn.
Recgnized r nt, waste pickers have lng been treated with disrespect. Marin recalls an ccasin when smene living next t a building where she was cllecting cans threw water at her. "Because I recycle desn't mean I am less f a persn than anyne else," she says. It's a pity t see that the gvernment desn't stand by the garbage cllectr's side, either.
Frtunately, sme gvernments are starting t realize that prtecting the envirnment and humanity g hand in hand. Brazil classified waste picking as an fficial ccupatin in 2001. Tristan Miller studied mre than 10,000 puns (双关语) in ne research prject. The pun is a kind f jke that uses a wrd with tw meanings. Fr example, yu culd say, "Ballns d nt like pp music." The wrd "pp" can be a way f saying ppular music; r can mean the sund a balln makes when it expldes. But a rbt might nt get the jke. Tristan Miller says that is because humr is a kind f creative language that is extremely difficult fr cmputer intelligence t understand.
Allisn Bishp is a cmputer scientist and she als perfrms stand-up cmedy. She explained that machines are trained t lk fr patterns. Cmedy, n the ther hand, relies n things that stay clse t a pattern, but nt cmpletely within it. T be funny, humr shuld als nt be predictable, Bishp said. This sets a great bstacle fr a machine t recgnize and understand what is funny.
Bishp says since rbts have great difficulty understanding humr, she feels like it gives her better jb security as a cmedy perfrmer. It even made her parents happy when her brther decided t becme a full-time cmedy writer because it meant he wuldn't be replaced by a machine, she added.
Despite the difficulties, Darmstadt University's Miller says there are gd reasns t keep trying t teach humr t rbts. It culd make machines mre relatable, especially if they can learn t understand sarcasm (讽刺), he nted. Humans use sarcasm t say ne thing but mean anther. But Kiki Hempelmann thinks differently. "Teaching AI systems humr may make them find it where it isn't, and they may use it where it's inapprpriate," he said. "Maybe bad AI will start killing peple because it thinks smething is funny," he added.
