The mst imprtant skill I picked up at schl was keeping a rutine.
Rutines allw us t develp a rhythm t ur lives, but they als have their dwnsides.
It can be easy t get s accustmed t yur rutine that yu dn’t realize yu’re n lnger cnscius f yur time. This can stp prgress, which means yu start living yur life n autpilt. It’s imprtant that yu include time in yur rutine fr self-reflectin.
Ding the same thing week after week can be dull. If yu make time t try new things and explre new interests, yu can adjust yur rutine t better fit yur lifestyle as things change.
When I first came t cllege, I was tld cuntless times that it’s imprtant yu develp a rutine s yu can fcus n things imprtant t yu. But it’s easy t frget the bigger picture. I gt s used t the same ld things that I wuld ften frget abut all f the ther fun and exciting pprtunities cllege had t ffer.
It wasn’t until my junir year that I really started setting time aside t explre things that were interesting t me. This was partly because COVID-19 and lckdwn made my cllege life a lt mre bring. It was this experience that made me realize I was stuck in a rut, a feeling I’m sure many came t terms with.
I decided I was ging t make a change. I needed t find a balance between keeping a structured schedule and finding time t be creative and try new things.
I started writing and ding research t apply the things I learned in class. I started learning new instruments, visiting new places arund twn and explring new ways t get invlved in the lcal cmmunity. All f these different experiences allwed me t lk at the things I was ding frm a new perspective. It made me reassess what I’m ding with my life and pursue new gals, which have added huge value t my life.
Rutines are imprtant, yes, but dn’t frget: it’s nt the rutine that determines yur life. S dn’t frget t thrw smething new in there frm time t time. Abve all else, dn’t live yur life n autpilt.

Culture can affect nt just language and custms, but als hw peple experience the wrld n surprisingly basic levels.
Researchers, with the help f brain scans, have uncvered shcking differences in perceptin (感知) between Westerners and Asians, what they see when they lk at a city street, fr example, r even hw they perceive a simple line in a square, accrding t findings published in a leading science jurnal.
In western cuntries, culture makes peple think f themselves as highly independent individuals. When lking at scenes, Westerners tend t fcus mre n central bjects than n their surrundings. East Asian cultures, hwever, emphasize inter-dependence. When Easterners lk at a scene, they tend t fcus n surrundings as well as the bject.
Using an experiment invlving tw tasks, Dr Hedden asked subjects t lk at a line simply t estimate its length, a task that is played t American strengths. In anther, they estimated the line’s length relative t the size f a square, an easier task fr the Asians. The level f brain activity, by tracking bld flw, was then measured by Brain Scanners. The experiment fund that althugh there was n difference in perfrmance, and the tasks were very easy, the levels f activity in the subjects’ brains were different. Fr the Americans, areas linked t attentin lit up mre, when they wrked n the task they tended t find mre difficult — estimating the line’s length relative t the square. Fr the Asians, the attentin areas lit up mre during the harder task als — estimating the line’s length withut cmparing it t the square. The findings are a reflectin f mre than ten years f previus experimental research int east-west differences.
In ne study, fr instance, researchers ffered peple a chice amng five pens; fur red and ne green. Easterners were mre likely t chse a red pen while Westerners were mre likely’ t chse the green ne.
Culture is nt affecting hw yu see the wrld, but hw yu chse t understand and internalize it. But such habits can be changed. Sme psychlgical studies suggest that when an Easterner ges t the West r vice versa, habits f thught and perceptin als begin t change. Such research gives us clues n hw ur brain wrks and is hpeful fr us t develp prgrams t imprve ur memry, memry techniques and enhance and accelerate ur learning skills.

Future histry bks might recrd that we were rbbed f the use f ur eyes. In ur hurry t get frm ne place t anther, we fail t see anything n the way. Air travel gives yu a bird’s—eye view f the wrld—— r even less if the wing f the aircraft happens t get in yur way. When yu travel by car r train, yu are mving s quickly that yu d nt see the cuntryside clearly. Car drivers are frever thinking abut ging n and n; they never want t stp. The traveler n ft, n the ther hand, lives cnstantly in the present. Fr him traveling and arriving are ne and the same thing: he arrives smewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present mment with his eyes, his ears and the whle f his bdy. At the end f his jurney he feels a delicius physical tiredness. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward f all true travelers.
