In a fascinating discvery, western lwland grillas (大猩猩) at Z Atlanta have been caught summning their keepers using a strange cugh-sneeze mixture, which researchers have called a “snugh”. Rberta Salmi, a bilgical anthrplgist at the University f Gergia, and clleagues ran an experiment t cnfirm the purpse f the “snugh”, by placing eight f the z’s grillas in three different situatins. In the first, nly the keeper was present; in the secnd nly the fd was present; in the final ne, the keeper was hlding the fd. The fd and keeper were in sight but ut f reach. The grillas invlved used the “snugh” vcalizatin mst when there was a human present with fd, indicating the call is likely an attempt t get the keeper’s attentin.
This cmplex vcal learning — the ability t prduce unique calls — is rare in the animal kingdm and cnfirmed nly in sme species f birds bats and elephants. But they all d s by imitating.
