When it cmes t being fit and healthy, we're ften reminded t aim t walk 10,000 steps per day. This can be a frustrating target t achieve, especially when we're busy with wrk and ther cmmitments.
The 10,000 steps a day target seems t have cme abut frm a trade name pedmeter sld in 1965 by Yamasa Clck in Japan. The device was called "Manp-kei", which translates t "10,000 steps meter". This was a marketing tl fr the device and has seemed t have stuck acrss the wrld as the daily step target. It's even included in daily activity targets by ppular smart-watches, such as Fitbit.
In ancient Rme, distances were actually measured by cunting steps. In fact, the wrd "mile" riginated frm the Latin phrase mila passum, which means abut 2,000 steps. It's suggested the average persn walks abut 100 steps per minute, which wuld mean it wuld take a little under 20 minutes fr the average persn t walk a mile. S in rder fr smene t reach the 10,000-step gal, they wuld need t walk abut five miles a day, nearly tw hurs f activity.
Researchers have investigated the 10,000 steps a day target. The fact that sme studies have shwn this step target imprves heart health, mental health, and even lwers diabetes (糖尿病) risk, may, t sme extent, explain why we have stuck with this number.
But while sme research has shwn health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research frm Harvard Medical Schl has shwn that, n average, nearly 4,400 steps a day is enugh t significantly lwer the risk f death in wmen. This was when cmpared t nly walking arund 2,700 steps daily. The mre steps peple walked, the lwer their risk f dying was, befre leveling ff at arund 7,500 steps a day. N additinal benefits were seen with mre steps. Althugh it's uncertain whether similar results wuld be seen in men, it's ne example f hw mving a little bit mre daily can imprve health and lwer risk f death.
    8. Frm which des taking 10,000 steps fr walkers riginally cme?
    A. Ancient Rme.B. Fitbit.C. Mila passum.D. Manp-kei.
    9. Hw many steps will yu take n average t cver tw miles?
    A. 2000.B. 2700.C. 4000.D. 7500.
    10. What des the underlined phrase "leveling ff" mean?
    A. Remaining steady.B. Increasing greatly.
    C. Decreasing sharply.D. Disappearing suddenly
    11. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
    A. The mre yu walk daily, the healthier yu will be.
    B. 7,500 steps r s a day is the ideal number fr wmen.
    C. T be healthy yu'd better walk ten thusand steps.
    D. The number f effective steps is the same fr men and wmen.
