Perfectly Imperfect
The artist Lenard da Vinci, perhaps best knwn fr painting the Mna Lisa, prduced a drawing called the Vitruvian Man. In it, da Vinci shwed his idea f the perfectly sized male bdy. But is this really what a perfect bdy lks like?
An imperfect man
Cnsider Michael Phelps. The winningest swimmer f all time, Phelps earned 28 Olympic medals. His bdy des nt lk like the Vitruvian Man. In fact, Phelps’ bdy is quite unusual. The best swimmers tend t have lng trss (躯干) and shrt legs. Phelps is 6 feet 4 inches tall, but his trs is as lng as what yu wuld expect t see in a man wh is 6 feet 8 inches tall. His legs are the length typical f a man wh is 5 feet 10 inches. Phelps has lng arms t. Like the Vitruvian Man, mst peple have a wingspan rughly the same as their height. Phelps’ wingspan is 6 feet 7 inches, three inches lnger than his height.
His ankles are extremely flexible and his feet are big. S Phelps’ legs act like flippers(脚蹼)when he swims.
N ne culd argue that Phelps has a perfect bdy in da Vinci’s sense. But is it crrect t say it is imperfect? What des “perfectin” mean when we are talking abut human bilgy? Des it even exist?
What is physical perfectin?
Maybe perfectin has mre t d with hw a bdy wrks than hw it lks. Hw we wrk actually depends upn hw well we fit int ur envirnment.
Here’s an example frm the animal kingdm. Imagine brwn rabbits and white rabbits in a snwy field. Under these cnditins, predatrs (捕食者) are less likely t see and catch the white rabbits. In a summertime field—all brwn sil and green and glden plants—white rabbits are mre visible (可见的) and easier t catch. Neither white nr brwn fur is perfect fr rabbit survival. Rabbits need different bdies fr different seasns. And in fact, in sme types f rabbits, fur clr changes with the seasns. Like rabbits, all living things adapt t their envirnments. They need sme changes t help thrive (茁壮成长) in their specific envirnments. But evlutin (演变) isn’t engineering. Often, imperfectins that dn’t affect survival t badly get passed dwn thrugh the generatins.
Variatin (变化) as a way t success.
Michael Phelps’ bdy is nt perfectly symmetrical (对称的)r balanced. His physical variatins, hwever, may have given him the advantages t be a clse-t-perfect swimmer. Phelps’ case is nt the nly ne; tp athletes shw great variability that prvides them with the physical characteristics t apprach perfectin in actin. Usain Blt, an Olympic sprinter (短跑运动员), has legs s lng that it takes him fur t five fewer steps t cmplete a 100-meter race than his cmpetitrs.
Simne Biles, anther Olympic gld medalist, is bth strng and small. It is perfect fr her sprt f gymnastics. She may als have a better-than-average ability t sense where her bdy is in space, perhaps making jumps easier than it wuld be fr an average persn. N athlete is brn with the skills t win gld medals, thugh. Thse achievements require years f effrt.
Using variatin t yur advantage
Da Vinci’s drawing f the Vitruvian Man put maths and art tgether. T da Vinci, the Vitruvian Man shwed perfect prprtins (比例). It was his image f the perfectly frmed man. Da Vinci is a time-hnred artist, but is there really such a thing as a perfect bdy?
N.
In bilgy, there is n such thing as ne perfect bdy. In fact, variatin in all living things, including us, is the rule. This variatin is imprtant fr ur life. Human variatin has allwed us t live in wildly different envirnments—the trpics, deserts, and the Arctic—and t develp many different physical, mental, and emtinal talents. Nt nly is there n perfect human bdy, but als ur species thrives because we are different frm ne anther, each f us suited t ur wn way f living.
74.In the first paragraph, the Vitruvian Man is mentined t ________.
A.intrduce the tpic f a perfect bdy
B.explain the value f a famus drawing
C.explre hw t draw a picture like this
D.discuss whether the man drawn in it is perfect

B.T describe the rules in the swimming wrld.
C.T intrduce a perfect bdy in da Vinci’s sense.
D.T cmpare it with the perfectin that was shwn in the drawing by da Vinci.

A.Physical imperfectins influence the prcess f evlutin.
B.Rabbits learn t change their fur clr t avid predatrs.
C.Evlutin nly chses fr physical perfectins in living things.
