I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a vide abut saking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water t grw a whle new vegetable. S I tk ut a wide-muthed cup and placed the stub int it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the windw.
On a snwy mrning I nticed the first sign. A first small leaf frm its heart spread ut. A tiny green flag f hpe. Beaten, but nt defeated. This lettuce was nt dne living! Within days, it was impssible t see the cuts where I had remved the leaves. The grwth was explsive. And when I lifted the blssming head ut f the cup, tiny rt threads fell dwn, seeking fr the earth. What is grwing here? Lettuce r hpe?
If I were a lettuce in a similar cnditin, I’d want t skeptically assess where I fund myself befre cmmitting t full grwth. Yet fr this lettuce, my inadequate ffering f water and a place by a windw was enugh fr it t decide t reclaim itself again. It grew in a cup f water, in faith. This is the heart f this lettuce: alive, strng and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided t call it Mnty.
Mnty wanted t grw, as we all d. I think I gave him a little lve and freedm. Thse tw were all he needed t return t himself. I see jy in this lettuce. The return t self is always an expressin f jy, which is life itself. This is the tendency f all living things.
Mnty still lives in a cup, but I’m ging t transplant him utside. He deserves t becme his full self. The nly prblem I see nw is my ability t supprt Mnty. I hpe I have enugh f a green finger.
I’m surprised t find myself where I am. Maybe Mnty is, t. I have the same chice as he des: give in r start again. The prspect f starting again is discuraging. But my lettuce-friend, Mnty, leads the way. I can nly hpe t be as brave.

Fr adults, cmmunicating in ur first language feels easy and natural. Yet learning language is a cmplex prcess that is influenced by several factrs. When yung children are beginning t learn language, sme influences, such as the amunt f speech a child hears and the amunt f time they spend in back-and-frth language interactins with thers, have what may appear t be bvius cnnectins t language learning. Perhaps less bvius is that children’s wn physical experiences with their envirnment help them learn new wrds.
In new research in the cgnitive (认知的) sciences, we investigated hw this Is the case by cnsidering hw children learn wrds that refer t smething they can tuch, grasp and interact with. We asked parents t rate hw easily a child can physically interact with the bject, idea r experiences that a wrd refers t. We fund wrds that refer t bjects that are easy fr children t interact with are als wrds that are learned at an earlier age.
Fr instance, a wrd such as spn is usually learned earlier than a wrd such as sky. And this relatinship remains even when we cnsider ther things that can affect wrd learning, such as hw cmmn a wrd is in everyday language. Wrds such as spn and sky are bth relevant t everyday life, and s children will prbably hear thse wrds quite early in their develpment. One difference between them is that spn refers t smething they can tuch, grasp and interact with, whereas sky des nt.
Our findings agree with thse f studies where babies wre small head-munted bdy cameras t recrd their interactins with bjects. Thse studies shw that the children’s wn physical experiences helps them learn new wrds. Fr instance, in ne study researchers fund that 18-mnth-ld babies were mre likely t learn the-name f a new bject when they held that bject, and less likely t learn the name if their parent held the new bject. Anther study fund that 15-mnth-lds wh spent mre time using new bjects had learned mre nuns by the time they were 21 mnths ld.
12. What is the aim f the new research?
A. T study hw a baby interacts with everyday bjects.
B. T find ut what influences a baby’s language learning.
C. T investigate hw a baby learns names f everyday bjects.
D. T see if babies’ physical experiences help them learn new wrds.
13. Which f the fllwing might a baby learn at an earlier age?
A. Sky.B. Heart.C. Milk.D. Leaf.
14. What can we infer abut the authr?
A. A parent.B. A prfessr.C. A researcher.D. A jurnalist.
15. What is the functin f the last paragraph?
A. T further supprt their finding.B. T summarize the research result.
C. T pint ut new research directins.D. T intrduce results f ther findings.
