My Day f N Plastic
Since its inventin, plastic has affected every aspect f ur lives. It has made pssible thusands f cnveniences, but it has cme with dwnsides, especially fr the envirnment. In a 24-hur experiment, I tried t live withut it t see what plastic stuff we can’t d withut and what we may be able t give up.
At the start f my n-plastic day, I made my way tward the bathrm, nly t stp myself befre I went in. “Culd yu pen the dr fr me?” I asked my wife. “The handle is plastic.” She pened it fr me, letting ut a “this is ging t be a lng day” sigh (叹气).
My mrning rutine was a headache. I culdn’t use my tthpaste, tthbrush, shamp r sap, all f which were made f plastic r put in plastic cntainers. Getting dressed was als a challenge, given that s many clthing items include plastic.
When I went ut, I brught alng tw glass cntainers and clth bags f varius sizes. I walked t a sandwich shp. “Can yu make the salad in this glass cntainer?” I asked. The manager said OK but then rejected my request t use my steel spn.
After lunch, I tk the subway t Central Park, which scred me mre vilatins (违规), since I need a MetrCard and the trains themselves have plastic parts. But at least I didn’t sit in ne f thse plastic seats.
Back hme, I recrded sme f my impressins. By my cunt, n my day f n plastic, I had made 164 vilatins. I felt defeated. And als uncertain. The next day I called Gabby Salazar, a scientist wh studies what mtivates peple t supprt envirnmental causes, and asked her fr advice.
“Yu can drive yurself crazy,” she said, “but it’s nt abut perfectin. It’s abut prgress.” Believe it r nt, individual behavir matters. It adds up. “Remember,” she cntinued, “it’s nt abut plastic being the enemy. It’s abut single-use as the enemy.”
I prmised t try, even after my nt successful attempt. I’ll start with small things, building up habits. I can take clth bags t the grcery. I might start packing my glass water bttle and steel spn. And frm there, wh knws?

A new study reprts that a msquit’s sense f smell is mre cmplicated than we nce thught. And it may explain why this annying insect is s gd at seeking yu ut at a barbecue r in yur bedrm and biting yu — as well as lead t new strategies t prevent the ptentially deadly diseases transmitted by its bite.
Meg Yunger, a neurscientist at Bstn University, is c-authr f the study. She exhales (呼气) gently int ne f the msquit-filled cages. A waft (股) f carbn dixide blws acrss the insects, and they g wild. “And nw, they’re lking fr a target like the cmplex mixture f human bdy smell — a smell that’s attractive t the msquites,” Yunger explains.
In many parts f the wrld, this attractin isn’t merely an annyance fr humans. It’s a majr health prblem. Msquites transmit diseases t humans. These diseases include dengue, Zika, chikungunya fever and malaria. The last disease alne causes ver half a millin deaths each year.
S scientists have attempted t break this attractin. But try as they might, the little msquit has resisted. “They’re really gd at what they d,” Yunger says. Mst f what we knw abut the neurscience f smell cmes frm mice and fruit flies, where the wiring is fairly simple. Each neurn (神经元) in the nse has ne kind f receptr (感受器) that detects a single kind f smell — say, a banana. And all the neurns with receptrs fr the banana smell cnnect t the same part f the brain. Yunger and the thers studied msquit brains, where she fund that each neurn has multiple receptrs that can detect multiple smells.
This wrk culd give researchers additinal ways t battle the insects like develping traps that cntain new smell mixtures that are mre appealing than peple.
“It’s an enrmus study,” says Jsefina del Marml, a neurbilgist at the Harvard Medical Schl. She says there’s mre wrk t be dne t check, neurn by neurn, that each ne actually respnds t all the smells it has receptrs fr. But regarding the central finding, she says, “It really des change a lt abut what we knw f hw insects perceive the wrld.”
8. Why des Yunger exhale int a msquit-filled cage?
A. T see if breath cntributes t disease transmissin.
B. T cnfuse the experimented msquites.
C. T experiment n msquites’ sense f smell.
D. T keep targeted msquites alive.
9. Hw d msquites differ frm fruit flies?
A. They have a clearer smell mechanism.
B They have mre neurns t detect smells.
C. They have bigger brain parts fcusing n smell.
D. They have mre smell receptrs in each neurn.
10. What is the significance f the study?
A. It inspires new methds t prevent msquit bites.
B. It may have fund an ideal way t study insects.
C. It prves the previus assumptin abut msquites.
D It sheds light n hw msquites transmit diseases.
11. What des Jsefina del Marml think f the research finding?
A. It has many weaknesses.B. It is a big step frward.
C. It is far frm impressive.D. It has a wrldwide influence.

A team f researchers frm the Universities f Washingtn and Trnt have develped an app, FeverPhne, suitable fr diagnsing (诊断) a patient’s fever.
“As an undergraduate, I was ding research in a lab where we shwed that yu culd use the temperature sensr in a smartphne t measure air temperature,” says lead authr Jseph Breda. “When I came t the UW, my adviser and I wndered hw we culd apply a similar technique fr health. We decided t measure fever in an accessible way. The primary cncern with temperature isn’t that it’s a difficult signal t measure; it’s just that peple dn’t have thermmeters (体温计).”
“In a wave f flu, fr instance, peple running t the emergency rm can take a week smetimes. S if peple were t share fever results with public health agencies thrugh the app, this earlier sign culd help us take actin sner,” adds Mastafa Springstn, c-authr f the study.
The trick is t use the temperature sensr already present in a smartphne. A patient hlds the smartphne’s display against their frehead fr 90 secnds, and the rise in temperature is cmpared against the surrunding temperature t determine their cre bdy temperature — using a machine learning mdel trained n a number f test cases t calibrate the results.
It may sund like a crazy apprach, but in testing, the FeverPhne app was able t estimate the cre bdy temperature f 37 patients in a real emergency department with an average errr f 0.23℃ — arund half the 0.5℃ errr range required fr clinical use.
“We started with smartphnes since they’re easy t get data frm,” Breda says. “I am already wrking n seeing if we can get a similar signal with wearables like smartwatches. What’s nice, because watches are much smaller, is their temperature will change mre quickly. S yu culd imagine having a user put a Fitbit t their frehead and measure in 10 secnds whether they have a fever r nt.”
12. What inspired Breda t develp FeverPhne?
A. His adviser’s suggestin.B. His previus research success.
C. His past experience in the UW.D. His cncerns abut air temperature.
13. What des the underlined wrd “calibrate” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Access.B. Repeat.C. Dubt.D. Adjust.
14. What did the testing shw abut FeverPhne?
A. It was effective in measuring bdy temperature.B. It was hardly suitable in a real emergency.
C. It was mre useful than a real thermmeter.D. It was n mre than a crazy slutin.
15. Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
A. FeverPhne can save yu frm hspital visits
B. Yur smartphne can becme a thermmeter
C. Wearables prvide a quicker temperature reading
D. The temperature sensr is present in a thermmeter

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了研究人员开发了一款名为FeverPhne的应用程序,可以用来诊断病人的发热。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中Jseph Breda的话“As an undergraduate, I was ding research in a lab where we shwed that yu culd use the temperature sensr in a smartphne t measure air temperature(作为一名本科生,我在一个实验室里进行了研究,我们在那里证明了可以使用智能手机中的温度传感器来测量空气温度)”和“When I came t the UW, my adviser and I wndered hw we culd apply a similar technique fr health. We decided t measure fever in an accessible way.(当我来到华盛顿大学时,我和我的顾问想知道我们如何将类似的技术应用于健康。我们决定以一种方便的方式测量发烧。)”可知,他本科时期在实验室里的研究证明了可以使用智能手机中的温度传感器来测量空气温度,后来他到华盛顿大学后决定将类似的技术用于测量发烧。由此可推知,他之前实验的成功启发了他开发FeverPhne。故选B。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词所在句中的“the rise in temperature is cmpared against the surrunding temperature t determine their cre bdy temperature”和“using a machine learning mdel trained n a number f test cases”可知,通过将温度上升与周围温度进行比较来确定人体的核心体温,并且还要使用在多个测试案例中训练的学习模型机器,由此可推测出,首先通过比较确定的核心体温不准确,需要使用学习模型机器校准测量结果。calibrate意为“校准”,和adjust(调节)意思相近。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“in testing, the FeverPhne app was able t estimate the cre bdy temperature f 37 patients in a real emergency department with an average errr f 0.23℃ — arund half the 0.5℃ errr range required fr clinical use(在测试中,FeverPhne应用程序能够估计真实急诊科37名患者的核心体温,平均误差为0.23℃,约为临床使用所要求0.5℃误差范围的一半)”可知,测试中的平均体温误差为0.23℃,小于临床使用要求误差范围,由此可推测出,FeverPhne能够有效测量体温。故选A。
【15题详解】
标题归纳题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“A team f researchers frm the Universities f Washingtn and Trnt have develped an app, FeverPhne, suitable fr diagnsing (诊断) a patient’s fever.(华盛顿大学和多伦多大学的一组研究人员开发了一款名为FeverPhne的应用程序,适用于诊断患者的发烧。)”可知,本文主要介绍了研究人员开发的一款名为FeverPhne的应用程序,用来诊断患者的发烧。再结合第三段中的“In a wave f flu, fr instance, peple running t the emergency rm can take a week smetimes. S if peple were t share fever results with public health agencies thrugh the app, this earlier sign culd help us take actin sne(例如,在一波流感中,人们有时需要一周的时间才能跑到急诊室。因此,如果人们通过该应用程序与公共卫生机构分享发烧结果,这一早期迹象可以帮助我们更快地采取行动)”可知,这款应用程序可以避免人们去急诊室的麻烦,因此A项“FeverPhne可以让你免于去医院就诊”适合作本文标题。故选A。
