Americans n lnger expect public figures, whether in speech r in writing, t cmmand the English language with skill and gift. Nr d they aspire t such cmmand themselves. In his latest bk, Ding Our Own Thing: The Degradatin f Language and Music and Why We Shuld, Like, Care, Jhn McWhrter, a linguist and cntrversialist (善辩者) f mixed liberal and cnservative views, sees the triumph f 1960s cunter-culture as respnsible fr the decline f frmal English.
Blaming the permissive 1960s is nthing new, but this is nt yet anther criticism against the decline in educatin. Mr. McWhrter’s academic specialty is language histry and change, and he sees the gradual disappearance f “whm,” fr example, t be natural and n mre regrettable than the lss f the case-endings f Old English.
But the cult f the authentic and the persnal, “ding ur wn thing”, has spelt the death f frmal speech, writing, petry and music. While even the mdestly educated sught an elevated tne when they put pen t paper befre the 1960s, even the mst well regarded writing since then has sught t capture spken English n the page. Equally, in petry, the highly persnal, perfrmative genre is the nly frm that culd claim real liveliness. In bth ral and written English, talking is triumphing ver speaking, spntaneity ver craft.
Illustrated with an entertaining array f examples frm bth high and lw culture, the trend that Mr. McWhrter dcuments is unmistakable. But it is less clear, t take the questin f his subtitle, why we shuld, like, care. As a linguist, he acknwledges that all varieties f human language, including nn-standard nes like Black English, can be pwerfully expressive — there exists n language r dialect in the wrld that cannt cnvey cmplex ideas. He is nt arguing, as many d, that we can n lnger think straight because we d nt talk prper.
Russians have a deep lve fr their wn language and carry large chunks f memrized petry in their heads, while Italian pliticians tend t elabrate speech that wuld seem ld-fashined t mst English-speakers. Mr. McWhrter acknwledges that frmal language is nt strictly necessary, and prpses n radical educatin refrms — he is really grieving ver the lss f smething beautiful mre than useful. We nw take ur English “n paper plates instead f china”. A shame, perhaps, but prbably an inevitable ne.
    24. What d we knw abut the decline f frmal English accrding t McWhrter?
    A. It is inevitable in radical educatin refrms.
    B. It is but all t natural in language develpment.

    B. Black English can be mre expressive than standard English.
    C. Nn-standard varieties f human language are just as entertaining.
    D. Of all the varieties, standard English can best cnvey cmplex ideas.

    C. Their admiratin fr their memry.D. Their cntempt fr their ld-fashinedness.

Althugh literacy appeared independently in several parts f the prehistric wrld, the earliest evidence f writing is the cuneifrm Sumerian script n the clay tablets f ancient Mesptamia, which, archaelgical detective wrk has revealed, had its rigins in the accunting practices f cmmercial activity. Researchers demnstrated that preliterate peple, t keep track f the gds they prduced and exchanged, created a system f accunting using clay tkens as symblic representatins f their prducts. Over many thusands f years, the symbls evlved thrugh several stages f abstractin until they became wedge-shaped (cuneifrm) signs n clay tablets, recgnizable as writing.
The riginal tkens were three-dimensinal slid shapes-tiny spheres, cnes, disks, and cylinders. A debt f six units f grain and eight head f livestck, fr example, might have been represented by six cnical and eight cylindrical tkens. T keep batches f tkens tgether, an innvatin was intrduced whereby they were sealed inside clay envelpes that culd be brken pen and cunted when it came time fr a debt t be repaid. But because the cntents f the envelpes culd easily be frgtten, tw-dimensinal representatins f the three-dimensinal tkens were impressed int the surface f the envelpes befre they were sealed. Eventually, having tw sets f equivalent symbls-the internal tkens and external markings-came t seem redundant, s the tkens were eliminated, and nly slid clay tablets with tw-dimensinal symbls were retained. Over time, the symbls became mre numerus, varied, and abstract and came t represent mre than trade cmmdities, evlving eventually int cuneifrm writing.
The evlutin f the symblism is reflected in the archaelgical recrd first f all by the increasing cmplexity f the tkens themselves. The earliest tkens, dating frm abut 10,000 t 6,000 years ag, were f nly the simplest gemetric shapes. But abut 3500 , mre cmplex tkens came int cmmn usage, including many naturalistic frms shaped like miniature tls, furniture, fruit, and humans.
    28. Which f the fllwing is NOT mentined abut clay envelpes?
    A. They cntained batches f tkens.B. They culd be reused frequently.
    C. They had markings n the utside.D. They culd be used t recrd debts.
    29. Which f the fllwing can be inferred abut the difference between earlier tkens and later tkens?
    A. Later tkens were made f many different materials, but earlier nes were made nly f clay.
    B. Later tkens ften lked like the cmmdities that they represented, but earlier nes did nt.
    C. Later tkens represented agricultural prducts, but earlier nes represented finished prducts.
    D. Later tkens were based n pictgraphs, but earlier nes were based n naturalistic frms.
    30. Which f the sentences best expresses the essential infrmatin in the underlined sentence?
    A. Sumerian script, the earliest knwn frm f writing amng prehistric writing systems, was first used n clay tablets fr accunting purpses.
    B. Althugh the earliest Sumerians engaged in cmmercial activity and practiced accunting, they were nt as literate as peple in ther parts f the prehistric wrld.
    C. Archaelgists have discvered that literacy was develped in several parts f the wrld, including ancient Mesptamia.
    D. Archaelgical detective wrk has revealed the cmmercial accunting practices f the Sumerians f ancient Mesptamia and prvided a written recrd f their intense cmmercial activity.
    31. What might be the best title fr the text?
    A. Evidence f the Earliest WritingB. A lng histry f tkens
    C. Evlutin f the symblismD. Origins f the symbls
    D
D yu remember all thse years when scientists argued that smking wuld kill us but the dubters insisted that we didn’t knw fr sure? That the evidence was incnclusive, the science uncertain? That the antismking lbby was ut t destry ur way f life and the gvernment shuld stay ut f the way? Lts f Americans bught that nnsense, and ver three decades, sme 10 millin smkers went t early graves.
There are upsetting parallels tday, as scientists in ne wave after anther try t awaken us t the grwing threat f glbal warming. The latest was a panel frm the Natinal Academy f Sciences, enlisted by the White Huse, t tell us that the Earth’s atmsphere is definitely warming and that the prblem is largely man-made. The clear message is that we shuld get mving t prtect urselves. The president f the Natinal Academy, Bruce Alberts, added this key pint in the preface t the panel’s reprt: “Science never has all the answers. But science des prvide us with the best available guide t the future, and it is critical that ur natin and the wrld base imprtant plicies n the best judgments that science can prvide cncerning the future cnsequences f present actins.”
Just as n smking, vices nw cme frm many quarters insisting that the science abut glbal warming is incmplete, that it’s OK t keep puring fumes int the air until we knw fr sure. This is a dangerus game: by the time 100 percent f the evidence is in, it may be t late. With the risks bvius and grwing, a prudent peple wuld take ut an insurance plicy nw.
Frtunately, the White Huse is starting t pay attentin. But it’s bvius that a majrity f the president’s advisers still dn’t take glbal warming seriusly. Instead f a plan f actin, they cntinue t press fr mre research — a classic case f “paralysis by analysis.”
T serve as respnsible stewards f the planet, we must press frward n deeper atmspheric and ceanic research. But research alne is inadequate. If the Administratin wn’t take the legislative initiative, Cngress shuld help t begin fashining cnservatin measures. A bill by Demcratic Senatr Rbert Byrd f West Virginia, which wuld ffer financial incentives fr private industry, is a prmising start. Many see that the cuntry is getting ready t build lts f new pwer plants t meet ur energy needs. If we are ever ging t prtect the atmsphere, it is crucial that thse new plants be envirnmentally sund.
    32. What was an argument made by supprters f smking?
    A. There was n scientific evidence f the crrelatin between smking and death.
    B. The number f early deaths f smkers in the past decades was insignificant.
    C. Peple had the freedm t chse their wn way f life.
    D. Antismking peple were usually talking nnsense.
    33. What can science serve as accrding t Bruce Alberts?
    A. A prtectr.B. A judge.C. A critic.D. A guide.
    34. What des the wrd “prudent” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A. Cautius.B. Arbitrary.C. Respnsible.D. Expericed.
    35. Why des the authr assciate the issue f glbal warming with that f smking?
    A. They bth suffered frm the gvernment’s negligence.
    B. A lessn frm the latter is applicable t the frmer.
    C. The utcme f the latter aggravates the frmer.
    D. Bth f them have turned frm bad t wrse.

“Take ut a piece f paper,” the teacher cntinued, when pinting at wrds n the blackbard. “Write fr the next thirty minutes n this tpic.” Mia began writing crazily as idea after idea fught fr recgnitin in her head.
The final result was a shrt stry abut a beautiful beach huse. As she wrte, she culd smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull f the sand beneath her feet. Fr just a mment, she frgt where she was. She was lst in the stry.
“OK, pass yur papers frward,” said the teacher. “Let’s see what we have.” Fr the rest f the class time, the teacher read each individual wrk alud. Mia riginally thught it wuld be awkward. Hwever, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher's vice. “He’s actually enjying this,” she thught. When the class wuld be sn ver, there were still fifteen students’ papers nt read, including Mia’s paper.
