Matt Haig, the best-selling authr f the nvel “The Midnight”, recmmends sme bks that ffer wisdm r cmfrt in difficult times.
Letters t a Yung Pet by Rainer Rilke (1929). This is the ultimate cmfrt read. The bk is what the title suggests: letters frm an lder pet t a yunger ne. The great thing abut Rilke’s advice is that it acknwledges the darkness and suffering f existence, yet manages despite that—r maybe even because f that—t inspire.
When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön(1996). I read this bk during the first lckdwn, and it was the perfect read fr uncertain times. Chödrön is a Buddhist, but the advice and philsphy in these relatively few pages speaks universally. It’s a great bk abut embracing life in its ttality, abut seeing hpe and suffering as part f a whle.
The Huse at Ph Crner by A.A. Milne(1928). The Winnie-the-Ph stries really speak t peple ging thrugh tugh times. In many ways, each f the characters reflects a different mental state: Eeyre is depressed, Tigger is hyper-active, Piglet is anxius, and Ph reflects a hpe and ptimism much needed in recvery. I reread this bk when I was ill with a panic disrder, and it cmfrted me.
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamtt (1994). In my pinin, this is the greatest bk abut writing ever written. But like Rilke, Lamtt is ffering far mre than writing advice. She is ffering wisdm n life and hw t embrace its imperfect nature.
    21. Which bk came ut first?
    A. Bird by Bird.B. The Midnight.
    C. Letters t a Yung Pet.D. The Huse at Ph Crner.

    B. There is hpe and suffering in life.
    C. Peple have a variety f mental states.
    D. The undesirable things f life can be ignred.
    23. What d the fur bks have in cmmn?
    A. All cntain inspiring advice.
    B. They are based n true facts.
    C. Matt Haig instructed their nvelists.
    D. Writing will be imprved by reading them.

One day in elementary schl, a friend asked me “What are yu eating?” as she glanced at my lunchbx. “It smells,” she said, nse crinkled.
I was eating bhindi rti, my favrite Indian snack, which my mm had packed fr me. But feeling embarrassed fr having a “smelly” lunch and wanting t fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbx. That day, I went hungry.
Mst days after that, lunchtime at schl felt like a battle. If I wasn’t trying t hide my lunch r sneak quick bites when n ne was lking, I’d insist n bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the ther kids. My mm, wh didn’t grw up eating American fd, tried her best, but the sandwiches never lked, r tasted, as gd as the fd I devured(津津有味地吃) at hme.

Fr this article, I talked with kids wh culd relate. But they als surprised me:They dealt with “the lunchbx mment” differently than I did. The next day, Satya brught enugh dal t share with her entire class — and they lved it. Frm then n, she says, “My teacher at schl made a rule: Dn’t yuck smene’s yum.”
Lking back, I wish I’d had the wisdm f Satya and ffered my friend a bite f my lunch, r just tld her it was delicius — especially because nw, as an adult, I see that Indian fd is universally lved by my friends. Sme even try t ck Indian lentils r chickpeas at hme! And when I’m hungry, guess what? I miss my mm’s bhindi rti and her care in making it fr me. Fd is an expressin f culture, traditin, family and lve. And that’s smething t celebrate, nt hide.
24.Why did the writer g hungry ne day in elementary schl?
A.She didn’t like her smelly lunch.

C.She ate American fd instead f her mm’s Indian cking.

C.Indian fd is delicius and universally appreciated.
D.The lunchbx mment is when ne can taste different fds.

    Practice Speaking and Listening
That’s the final tip that leads yu t perfectin. Turn speaking and listening int a daily activity. Yu can listen t audibks(有声读物) in the freign language, and then talk t smene abut the impressins. If yu dn’t have anyne t talk t, just get in an empty rm, recrd yur speech and listen t it. 40 .

    提供:prvide…with/ffer/supply…fr
    做出选择:make a chice/ make selectin
    许诺:make a prmise/prmise/give ne’s wrd
    情绪类

【高分句型2】Callie smiled and hugged Tamara, with tears running dwn her cheeks (运用了with复合结构)
