First impressins can set a lasting tne, but there is ften smething dubtful. Psychlgists have dcumented a phenmenn knwn as the liking gap, whereby tw peple meeting fr the first time rutinely underestimate hw much their cunterparts (对应方) like them. A new study finds that the liking gap ccurs in grup settings t and affects hw well grups functin.
In ne experiment, the researchers divided 159 participants int grups f three and asked them t have a cnversatin. They then surveyed the participants individually abut hw much they liked each f their partners, hw much they thught each partner liked them, and hw much they thught their partners liked each ther. On average, peple liked their partners mre than they believed their partners liked them, and thught themselves t be the least liked in the grup.

May Shin, 20, and Jiwn Chi, 18, met in a research design class at the Fryeburg Academy, a high schl in Maine. May had desired t explre hw micr-plastics might affect the ecsystem. Jiwn was crazy abut plants and fungi. The yung scientists cperated t test hw lng-lived plastics might affect farm crps.
Scientists have shwn certain fungi can aid rt grwth and a plant’s nutrient uptake. Thse rganisms are named arbuscular mycrrhizal fungi (AMF). Certain farm wastes, like straw, can prvide nutrients t plants and help stabilize their rts. Such wastes are als knwn as mushrm substrate (基质) and peple ften grw mushrms in them.
May and Jiwn planted ver 2,000 scallin (大葱) seeds in pts f sil. Half the seeds gt sil plluted with micr-plastics. The rest grew in plastic-free sil. The plants then were further divided int fur grups. The yung scientists added AMF t the sil in ne grup. Anther grup had a tp layer f mushrm substrate. A third grup gt bth treatments. Scientists have shwn certain fungi can aid rt grwth and a plant’s nutrient uptake. Thse rganisms are named arbuscular mycrrhizal fungi (AMF). Certain farm wastes, like straw, can prvide nutrients t plants and help stabilize their rts. Such wastes are als knwn as mushrm substrate (基质) and peple ften grw mushrms in them.
May and Jiwn planted ver 2,000 scallin (大葱) seeds in pts f sil. Half the seeds gt sil plluted with micr-plastics. The rest grew in plastic-free sil. The plants then were further divided int fur grups. The yung scientists added AMF t the sil in ne grup. Anther grup had a tp layer f mushrm substrate. A third grup gt bth treatments. The last grup gt nne. Fr three weeks, the pair tracked hw many scallins spruted (发芽) in each grup and measured the plants’ height nce each week.
