Varius tribes and racial grups live in Namibia and a number f languages are spken. When Namibia gained independence in 1990, English became the fficial language. Teachers were suppsed t teach in English, but many lacked the language skills t d s. My jb was t train the teachers.
Schls were quite bare.Sme classrms cnsisted merely f sticks stuck in the sand and a metal rf. Each student had nly ne threadbare unifrm. The students had exhausting days. They walked miles t get t schl, ften bareft. They als did many daily chres. Even with their muntains f wrk,few pssessins and little pprtunity, these children were jyful. I admired that.
This was my first time living abrad in a different culture. Simply adapting t the living cnditins was a big adjustment. I had n electricity, running water, phne r Internet. Imagine n air cnditining where the temperature was ften abve 38 degrees Celsius! Hwever, I culd end each day with a splendid African sunset. And at night, I culd have an incredible pllutin-free view f the entire Milky Way(银河).
Befre Namibia,I never thught a girl like me wuld adapt t such an envirnment. My experience awakened me t nt nly the limitatins we place n urselves, but als ur amazing ability t adapt.

Fr example,hw quickly plants and animals can prduce,hw well they can cmpete with ther species fr resurces, and what kinds f fd they can eat r habitat they can live in.
The result f this is that we might be able t predict which animals will survive under climate change. The wd muse is fund thrughut cntinental Eurpe. As climate changes,we think the muse will mve nrth because it can breed quickly, live in lts f habitats, has a brad diet, and individuals can travel a lng way. And cnsider the Eurpean grund squirrel. The tmat leafminer mth riginates frm Peru and is cmmn thrughut Suth America. Hwever, it has spread thrugh Eurpe since 2007 and has becme ne f the largest pests in Mediterranean regins, threatening fd supplies. Experts arund the wrld are currently struggling with new ways t battle the mth, but it has develped resistance t pesticides , leaving farmers helpless t stp the damage. Nw a new study frm the University f Prtsmuth has shwn that an answer may lie in the trpical tent-web spider.
Scientists carried ut labratry tests and fund that the spiders banded tgether t frm webs which easily caught the flying insects, which they then ate. The trpical tent-web spider perate in large grups and can create giant jined-up webs t capture bugs. Dr. Lena Grinsted, the lead authr f the study, said, “Spiders can prvide large surface areas f capture webs capable f catching insects in the air. This culd ptentially lead t a reductin f reliance n chemical pesticides, resulting in less pllutin in sils, waterways and fd chains in the future.”
Crp damage is als caused by the larvae (幼虫), which directly attack the tmat fruit, making the crp ugly and thus unmarketable. Larvae live inside the leaf until they begin the prcess f turning int a mth, making them difficult t cntrl. Hwever, scientists expect that by targeting the adult mth ppulatin, it will reduce the number f eggs being laid. In additin, the spiders build the biggest webs during the summer mnths, which will benefit the tmat planting and grwing seasn in May and June.
The researchers said the study will “pen drs fr the use f grup-living spiders t cntrl agricultural pests”, but warned that mre wrk was needed t check the spiders did nt change the eclgy f regins. Dr. Grinsted added, “Future studies are nw needed t investigate whether the spiders may negatively impact crp pllinatin (授粉) by als catching bees and ther key pllinatrs.”

    A. It is large in size. B. It is drug-resistant.
    C. It spreads t quickly. D. It threatens fd supply.
    13. What makes using the spiders t cntrl pests pssible?
    A. Their ability t weave huge webs. B. The reductin f pest-cntrl cst.
    C. Their imprtance in the fd chain. D. The pllutin f chemical pesticides.
    14. Hw d scientists plan t deal with the larvae?
    A. By destrying the eggs. B. By reducing fd supply.
    C. By cntrlling the surce. D. By stpping them hatching.
    15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Mths: The Biggest Threat t Crps B. Mths: A Species Difficult t Cntrl
    C. Spiders: The Future f Mdern Agriculture D. Spiders: An Ec-friendly Alternative t Drugs
