The wrld’s first 3D-printed wd lg hive (蜂箱) is a new prject develped by the Lacrima Fundatin in Edinburgh t reduce the trubling decline f hney bee ppulatins arund the wrld.
The Lacrima Fundatin is a charity that is “cmmitted t the cnservatin and prtectin f ne f the Earth’s mst imprtant inhabitants.” The charity teamed up with beekeepers in Eurpe t wrk twards a rewilding apprach that wuld ffer bees a natural nest habitat and, in turn, create resilience (复原力) amng bee cmmunities.
Hney bees are ne f the mst imprtant pllinatrs (授粉者), and althugh they may seem small and insignificant, they are vital fr the prductin f ur fd — we culdn’t eat withut them! Hwever, in recent years, bee ppulatins have been severely impacted by the grwing climate emergency and ur intensive agriculture practices, including the veruse f pesticides.
With help frm lcal partners, the Fundatin created 3D-printed wd lg hives, which allw the bees t live in an undisturbed ecsystem where they can carry ut their lives. They install these hives in high sectins f tree trunks t simulate (模拟) natural cnditins fr the big hney bee ppulatins.
Vince Mucha, chairman f the Lacrima Fundatin, said, “Even thugh there are ther peple and rganisatins wrking in the field f natural beekeeping, the impact, prgress and scpe f these prjects is minimal and slw, due t limited access t resurces and clear visin. I am driven by respnsibility and decided t act n it due t the urgency and imprtance f this matter.”

A new methd f lie detectin shws that lie tellers wh are made t multi-task while being interviewed are easier t spt. The extra brain pwer needed t cncentrate n a secndary task ther than lying was particularly challenging.
Prfessr Aldert Vriji frm the University f Prtsmuth designed an experiment t identify lie tellers. The 164 participants in the experiment were first asked t give their levels f supprt r ppsitin abut varius scietal tpics that were in the news. They were then given a truth r lie cnditin by chance and interviewed abut the three tpics that they felt mst strngly abut. Truth tellers were instructed t reprt their true pinins while lie tellers were instructed t lie abut their pinins during the interviews.
Fr the secndary task, participants were given a seven-digit (数字) car number and instructed t recall it back t the interviewer. Half f them received additinal instructins that if they culd nt remember the car number during the interview, they may be asked t write dwn their pinins after the interview.
Participants were given the pprtunity t prepare themselves fr the interview and were tld it was imprtant t cme acrss as cnvincing as pssible during the interviews — which was incentivized by being awarded a prize.
The results shwed that lie tellers’ stries sunded less reasnable and less clear than truth tellers’ stries, particularly when lie tellers were given the secndary task and tld that it was imprtant.
“The pattern f result suggests that the intrductin f secndary tasks in an interview culd help lie detectin but such tasks need t be intrduced carefully. It seems that a secndary task will nly be effective if lie tellers d nt neglect it. This can be achieved by either telling interviewees that the secndary task is imprtant, r by intrducing ne that cannt be neglected,’’ said Prfessr Vriji.
