In nature, ctpuses (章鱼) hunt mainly with their sense f tuch, using their eight arms t feel ut their envirnment fr hidden creatures. Researchers at the University f Minnesta recently studied a different way ctpuses hunt—when they identify prey (猎物) based n sight. The study findings shw that the marine creatures are quite cnsistent and methdical in hw they apprach prey.
Lead researcher Trevr Wardill and his team placed Califrnia tw-spt ctpuses int water tanks, hiding them in caves where they wuld have ne eye lking ut. They then placed either fiddler crabs r white shrimp in the tanks t see hw the ctpuses wuld try t catch them, capturing the interactins n vide. The crabs and shrimp behave differently when trying t escape frm predatrs (捕猎者), s using bth species gave the researchers an pprtunity t see whether this led the ctpuses t use a different arm fr hunting depending n the prey.
Wardill’s team fund that the ctpuses almst always used the same arm t grab their prey. Specifically, the secnd arm frm the middle f the ctpuses’ bdy, n the same side f their bdy as the eye, caught the prey. If they needed mre arms t grab prey, they wuld use the nes next t the secnd arm.
The ctpuses als attacked differently depending n the prey. When faced with crabs, an ctpus wuld mve suddenly n tp f the crab with its whle bdy. Hwever, when catching shrimp, the ctpuses wuld take ne arm and reach ut very slwly tward the shrimp, then grab it and latch (缠住) nt it with its ther arms t pull it in.

Despite all the effrts students make t graduate with a science majr, research has shwn that mst cllege science curses prvide students with nly a fragmented (碎片化的) understanding f fundamental scientific cncepts. The teaching methd imprves memrizatin f separate facts, prceeding frm ne textbk chapter t the next withut necessarily making cnnectins between them, instead f learning hw t use the infrmatin and cnnect thse facts meaningfully.
With that in mind, we develped a series f crss-disciplinary (跨学科的) activities. In ur mst recent study, we investigated hw well cllege students culd use their chemistry knwledge t explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. T begin with, we interviewed 28 first-year cllege students majring in sciences r engineering. All had taken bth intrductry chemistry and bilgy curses. We asked them t identify cnnectins between the cntent f these curses and what they believed t be the take-hme messages frm each curse. The students respnded with extensive lists f tpics, cncepts, and skills that they’d learned in class.
Fllwing that, a set f crss-disciplinary activities were designed t guide students in the use f cre chemistry ideas and knwledge t help explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. One activity explred the impacts f cean acidificatin n seashells. Here, the students were asked t use basic chemistry ideas t explain hw the increasing level f carbn dixide in sea water is affecting shell-building marine animals such as crals, clams and ysters.
Overall, the students felt cnfident f their chemistry knwledge. Hwever, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knwledge t explaining the bilgical phenmena. These findings highlight that a big gap remains between what students learn in their science curses and hw well prepared they are t apply that infrmatin.
The students in ur study als reprted that these activities helped them see links between the tw disciplines that they wuldn’t have perceived therwise. The ability t make these cnnectins is imprtant beynd the classrm as well, because it’s the basis f science literacy (科学素养). S we als came away with evidence that ur chemistry students at least wuld like t have the ability t have a deeper understanding f science and hw t apply it.

Despite all the effrts students make t graduate with a science majr, research has shwn that mst cllege science curses prvide students with nly a fragmented (碎片化的) understanding f fundamental scientific cncepts. In ur mst recent study, we investigated hw well cllege students culd use their chemistry knwledge t explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. T begin with, we interviewed 28 first-year cllege students majring in sciences r engineering. All had taken bth intrductry chemistry and bilgy curses. We asked them t identify cnnectins between the cntent f these curses and what they believed t be the take-hme messages frm each curse. The students respnded with extensive lists f tpics, cncepts, and skills that they’d learned in class.
Fllwing that, a set f crss-disciplinary activities were designed t guide students in the use f cre chemistry ideas and knwledge t help explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. One activity explred the impacts f cean acidificatin n seashells. Here, the students were asked t use basic chemistry ideas t explain hw the increasing level f carbn dixide in sea water is affecting shell-building marine animals such as crals, clams and ysters.
Overall, the students felt cnfident f their chemistry knwledge. Hwever, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knwledge t explaining the bilgical phenmena. These findings highlight that a big gap remains between what students learn in their science curses and hw well prepared they are t apply that infrmatin.
The students in ur study als reprted that these activities helped them see links between the tw disciplines that they wuldn’t have perceived therwise. The ability t make these cnnectins is imprtant beynd the classrm as well, because it’s the basis f science literacy (科学素养). S we als came away with evidence that ur chemistry students at least wuld like t have the ability t have a deeper understanding f science and hw t apply it.
