While the benefits f Zm and ther videcnferencing tls made them abslutely essential in the pandemic (疫情), the research suggests that heavy reliance n the technlgy cmes at a cst t creative thinking.
Brucks at Clumbia University and her team started their investigatin when managers reprted having truble innvating with remte wrkers. Brucks dubted whether videcnferencing was a factr, suspecting that difficulties crdinating (协调) large, glbal teams nline might be t blame instead.
T find ut, the researchers analysed ideas fr new prducts generated by 1,490 engineers fr a multinatinal cmpany. The engineers, wh were in Finland, Hungary, India, Israel and Prtugal, were randmly paired up and given an hur r s t brainstrm prducts either in persn r ver videcnferencing. They then selected their best idea.
Writing in Nature, the researchers reprt that the engineers prduced mre ideas, and mre innvative ideas, when wrking face t face. “They are nt nly generating a larger number f creative ideas, but their best idea is better,” Brucks said. Virtual teams were just as gd at selecting the best ideas frm a bunch as thse that met in persn.
“Visual fcus is a huge cmpnent f cgnitive (认知) fcus. When yu’re fcused n the screen and ignring the rest f the envirnment, that affects hw yu apprach the task,” said Brucks. “It’s uniquely bad fr creativity because it’s inhibiting brader explratin.”
Brucks said the impact n the real wrld “culd be huge”, leading t a divisin f labur between face-t-face and virtual meetings that culd “permanently reshape the ffice and wrk schedules”. But she urged businesses t be cautius, because if virtual meetings are cheaper than in-persn nes, they may still be mre cst-effective.
Asked fr tips, Brucks said peple culd save mre creative tasks fr in-persn meetings, r turn ff their camera when cming up with ideas. “I think it unlcks mre creative thinking,” she said.

    3. What des the underlined wrd “inhibiting” in paragraph 5 mean?

Cral reefs (珊瑚礁) are filled with a diverse range f fish. Sme fish are mre beautiful t humans than thers, and many peple firmly believe that beautiful fish deserve mre cnservatin than the uglier species. Is the “firm belief” true? Yu can get the answer frm a new paper published in the jurnal PLOS Bilgy.

With that data, they then trained a cmputer mdel t generate predictins fr an additinal 4,400 phtgraphs f 2,417 f the mst cmmn reef fish species. They next cmpared the aesthetic rating f each species with ther characteristics, including evlutinary histry, distinctiveness frm ther fish, cnservatin status and imprtance t fisheries.
After analyzing the numbers, researchers fund that the fish humans rated as the mst beautiful tended t be less eclgically and evlutinarily distinct. Prettier fish were als mre likely t be listed as species f “least cncern” n the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature(IUCN) Red List.
On the cntrary, the fish that humans fund t be the least attractive were the mst eclgically and evlutinarily distinct, and they were mre likely t be listed as “threatened” n the IUCN Red List. Unattractive species als tended t be mre imprtant t cmmercial fisheries, which put them at higher risk fr verfishing.
“The less attractive species have the highest eclgical distinctiveness, and thus prvide the highest diversity f eclgical functins,” they write in the paper. “We need t pay mre attentin t the extinctin risk f the less attractive fish species, r that might have verlked effects n reef ecsystem functining.”
“Therefre, t minimize the impact f aesthetic biases, scientists, cnservatin grups and plicymakers may need t change hw they cmmunicate abut wildlife,” the researchers write. “Making peple mre aware f the rles uglier fish play in reef ecsystems culd help them gain mre supprt.”
    5. What did the researchers d fr their research?
    A. They rated all the phts n their wn.B. They hunted fr reef fish in cral reefs.
    C. They stayed underwater t mnitr fish.D. They used a cmputer t predict ratings.
    6. What des the researchers’ analysis suggest?

    C. The “firm belief” isn’t true.D. Uglier fish are less imprtant.
    7. What is the researchers’ advice?
