We were talking abut jeans. When we shuld have been carefully studying ur vlleyball teammates n the curt, r at the very least cheering them n, Lacey and I were in a deep discussin abut the suffering f trying n jeans with ur mms, an unpleasant experience nly tw tweens frced t wear schl unifrms 95% f the year culd truly have. This was 1995 and if there was ne thing 12-year-lds culd agree n, it was hw badly they were treated when it came t jeans. “My mm will be like, ‘We can make them fit!’” I tld Lacey with a smile.
Inside jkes like these wuld becme the fundatin f ur friendship. When yu’re in middle schl, finding a friend t cmmiserate(同情)with is a matter f survival, and I fund the very best. And then in high schl, whether it was buying Starbucks after class r jining after-schl clubs, we rarely did anything apart. Teachers and students alike felt surprised when they’d see ne f us withut the ther we were that cnnected.
S it’s amazing that even thugh we put 3,000 miles between us in cllege and have spent at least tw-thirds f ur friendship that far away, we’re still best friends. A real achievement fr tw wildly different peple: I think f Lacey as calm, cl and cllected, whereas I am a bit mre high-strung(易激动的). She’s raising three beautiful children. I have ne. She grew up in a farm family. I was raised by a dctr and an actress. Any algrithm(计算程序)wuld likely say we’re nt a match, but I can’t imagine my life withut her.
Part f it is luck. I just happened t sit next t a super girl that day in the sprts center. But mre likely, it’s the effrt we bth put int staying clse even as we were physically apart.
    4. What did the authr and Lacey g thrugh when they were 12 years ld?
    A. They had difficulty in making friends.B. They fund it hard t cheer themselves up.
    C. They were frced t wear clthes they disliked.D. They had n chance t play fr the vlleyball team.
    5. What can we learn abut the authr and Lacey in high schl?
    A. They started a club.B. They became best friends.
    C. They set a gd example t thers.D. They enjyed each ther’s cmpany.
    6. What happened after the authr went t cllege?
    A. She kept up a lng-distance friendship with Lacey.
    B. She suddenly realized hw different Lacey and she were.
    C. She became as calm, cl and self-cntrlled as Lacey.
    D. She achieved many impressive things just like Lacey did.
    7. What des the authr mainly want t tell us in the last paragraph?
    A. Keeping a friendship takes wrk.B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
    C. Friendship is lve with understanding.D. The nly way t have a friend is t be ne.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many businesses t change frm ffice t remte wrk. Flexible wrk is nw a trend that will cntinue int the freseeable future. Similarly, replacing “why” with “tell me mre” encurages deeper thinking and engagement.
Allwing a team t arrive at their slutins is essential fr their develpment. Smetimes, hwever, habitual cmmunicatin patterns can be a barrier t building that muscle. “When I zered in n my cmmunicatin style, I realized my wrds were unintentinally disguising(掩盖)advice in the frm f a questin,” reflects David Kauzlaric. “I needed t let g f that habit and trust in my team t cme up with their answer instead f giving them a slutin.”
Effective cmmunicatin is key t impactful teamwrk. Being mindful f hw wrds land n peple is even mre imprtant in the mixed wrkspace. Optimizing(使……最优化)cmmunicatin results in teams with high mrale, engagement, and prblem-slving skills. “It’s better fr the team, and it’s better fr the business. Everybdy wins. ” cncludes David Kauzlaric.
    12. What is David Kauzlaric’s advice fr team leaders during remte wrk?
    A. Reducing infrmal meetings.B. Chsing their wrds with care.
    C. Equipping their team with new skills.D. Making as many phne calls as pssible.
    13. What des the underlined wrd “inclined” in the secnd paragraph prbably mean?
    A. AppintedB. HesitantC. WillingD. Energetic
    14. What prblem did David Kauzlaric mst prbably have in the past?
    A. He cnveyed criticism bitterly.
    B. He pressed his team t cme up with slutins.
    C. He stepped frward t quick in decisin-making.
    D. He was unwilling t accept different cmmunicatin styles.
