Once when I was fur, Mm attacked a keyhle with a paper twel, wiping a spider ut. “Stp!” I shuted, “She’s smebdy’s mther!” I believe peple shuldn’t harm ther living things and that even the tiniest creatures must be hnred.
One summer day, Mm and I planted a grapevine (葡萄树) in the yard. By the end f the summer, the lngest branches had spread ver the wall.
Then ne day, as I was watering, the mst magical thing happened. A beautiful midnight blue bug landed n my white T-shirt just belw the shulder. “Hell, pretty ne,” I whispered. She didn’t mve. Beautiful wings spread int a Y shape. She stuck t my shirt, unwilling t fly away. Ever when she left, I was still excited. That evening, I tld Mm what had happened. “It was amazing.” Mm said.
One mrning, weeks later, I went t feed my turtles. In the purple light f dawn, the grape leaves appeared brwn and lacy (网眼状的). Smething was wrng with my vine! I ran in t my Mm. We turned t a gardener nearby fr help. He called the culprit (罪魁祸首) the Western grape leaf mth, wh feeds n the leaves in her caterpillar (毛毛虫) stage. I was shcked. The mth had laid the eggs. Her babies were destrying my vine! Bacillus thuringiersis, a prduct widely used by grape grwers, was recmmended fr exterminating the mths.
I had intended t use the liquid, until I read the warning instructins. “Mm, we can’t d this. The pr bugs!” She ndded. The next afternn, I had an idea. I gt a jar and cupped it ver the mths, cutting ff the leaf they lay n. “I knw where I’ll take yu.” I whispered.
The next mrning. I rde a bus t the desert. I placed the jar near sme bushes and pened it “Be safe,” I said. It was my wish fr them. Back hme, the caterpillars cntinued their wrk. We are learning mre and mre every day abut just hw smart sme animals are: mnkeys, sme species f birds, dgs, cats. But hw abut ther animals? Snails? Msquits? They sure seem less smart. Still smarter than plants, thugh. Because it wuld be difficult t argue that plants are intelligent. Or wuld it?
In a new study, it was shwn that plants send ut sunds when they are sad. And these sunds are very different depending n whether they have recently been cut r whether they dn’t have enugh water. The sunds can’t be heard by human ears, as they are between 20 and 100 kilhertz, which is abve the bttm f human hearing (which usually has the upper limit f 15-17 kilhertz).
These are fantastic results: plants dn’t suffer in silence; they are screaming with pain. That is exactly what the ppular science press has been ding.
There is n evidence that they are heard by anyne althugh theretically (理论上) sme animals ---- bats, mths, mice ---- culd actually hear it as their ears are sensitive t the plant sunds. And it culd very well be a byprduct (副产品) f the physical cnditin f these plants: less water in the system leads t mre air bubbles (气泡) in plants, which leads t the sund f the ppping f these bubbles.
Is this a disappinting explanatin? I dn’t think s. The aim is t understand why plants d what they d. And the results abut the sunds cntribute t this bdy f knwledge. They culd even lead t better ways f cntrlling the needs f plants in gardening by sund bservatin.
All f this is true even if the plants dn’t strictly “cry” r “scream”.
Why are we unable t hear the sunds f plants?
Because they are imagined by humans.
Because they g beynd human hearing.
Because plants dn’t actually give ff sunds.
Because plants are nt as intelligent as animals.
What d we knw abut the study?
Plants keep silent even when they suffer.
Water in the plants sends ff different sunds.
    C. The plant sunds might shw their feelings r needs.
    D. The study aims t cntrl the needs and feelings f plants.
    30. Why des the authr cnsider the explanatin acceptable?
    A. Because plants dn’t actually “cry” r “scream”.
    B. Because the results prve their knwledge f plants.
    C. Because the results shw that-plants understand what they d.
    D. Because plants’ demands culd be met by bserving their sunds.
    31. What can be a suitable title fr the passage?
    A. Plants suffer in silenceB. Plants “cry” in pain
    C. Plants “scream” with jyD. Plants need attentin
    D

Their teachers’ teaching ability has been influenced.
Their students’ academic perfrmance has been wrsened.
Their schls’ ability t cmplete teaching tasks has been blcked.
What can we infer abut the mental health prblems f students in Seattle?
    A. They are slight but lasting.B. They are invisible and serius.
    C. They are rare but deadly.D. They are varius and challenging.
    34. What can we cnclude frm the actin taken by TikTk?
    A. TikTk has dne mre harm than gd t yunger users.
    B. TikTk will give away children’s cnversatins t their parents.
    C. TikTk will pay mre attentin t the nline security f yung users.
    D. TikTk has intrduced a parent guide t filter ut imprper vides.
    35. What’s the scial media cmpanies’ attitude t dealing with the lawsuit?
    A. Psitive.B. Negative.C. Uncncerned.D. Ineffective.
