In a 2012 study, Baz Keysar, a prfessr at the University f Chicag in the US, led an experiment n the relatinship between freign languages and peple's way f thinking.
In the experiment, peple were asked t make a chice: Just take ne pund r take a 50percent chance f winning 2.50 punds. When given this chice in their native language, mst peple tk the safe ptin f nly getting ne pund. But they were mre willing t make the riskier chice when asked in a freign language, leading t mre prfits verall, accrding t The Guardian. As Keysar put it, "Peple just hate the chance f lsing, but they hate it less in a freign language."
In anther study published this year, Keysar and his team did an experiment in which participants were given a series f related wrds like "dream", "snze", "bed" and "rest". Later, when asked which wrds they remembered hearing, peple were mre likely t mistakenly remember "sleep", which was nt n the list, in their native language. But it was much less likely t happen if they did the test in a freign language. As Keysar explained, peple have mre careful thinking when using a freign language, leading t mre accurate memries.
The freign language effect may even influence ur persnality. Silvia Purpuri at the University f Trent, Italy, lked at peple's willingness t face uncertainty and enter unfamiliar situatins. Being tlerant (宽容的) f uncertainty allws peple t have mre creative ideas and be mre pen t new things. It turns ut that peple naturally scre mre highly n this trait (特点) when they can speak r use a freign language because speaking a freign language requires taking risks.
