The car was small and simple, but in my imaginatin it was a high-speed racing car, speeding alng the race rad. It was during the schl summer hlidays and wrkmen were building a new driveway and garage (车库) beside ur huse. It meant t add smething new t ur hme. When I watched the wrkmen, I came up with an idea — I wuld build a car t drive int the garage in celebratin f it. I tld my mther and began with my plans. But I culdn’t find the right things fr making the car, s I gave up and sadly spent several days ding nthing. My mther nticed that I had stpped wrking and asked me why. I explained and she suggested that maybe I shuld change my plan t fit the things I had, rather than give up.
And that’s just what I did. I fund small pieces f wd in my father’s wrkshp and made my car frm anything that was lying arund the huse. When I fund a small engine (发动机) frm ne f my ld mdel planes, I added that. The pwer came frm a battery (电池) I fund in a bx.
By the time the garage was finished, s was my car. I called my family tgether utside the huse, started the engine and put the car n the driveway. It was fast and I had t run t the garage t prevent it frm hitting the new dr. My family began t cheer and I smiled prudly. T develp ne’s taste in English, the mst effective way is t read English bks widely. Yet ne may be at a lss t chse the prper bks, especially as a beginner. As a native nish, I wuld like t share sme f my reading experience.
My first English nvel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recmmended by many English teachers and prfessrs as an ideal bk fr English learners. But my experience was smewhat hrrible. I had great difficulty in understanding the nvel, let alne enjying it. It’s nt the vcabulary that trubled me, but rather the way Austen cnstructs sentences, and her way f thinking, which seemed rather unfamiliar t me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recvered after reading Hemingway’s nvel- A Farewell t Arms. N lng and puzzling sentences. And I particularly liked his brief style. S my first suggestin is, as a beginner, yu’d better chse mdern nvels instead f classical nes.
Hwever, if yu limit yurself t nvels, yu will miss a lt f treasures. Besides, English essays als play a key rle. They can at nce infrm yu, entertain yu, and imprve yur taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s wrk. Its language is plain, yet yu cannt help feeling the elegance and the special sense f humr. His simple language enables his philsphy within the reach f rdinary peple. Therefre, here cmes my secnd suggestin-essays are als vital.
Never fllw thers’ recmmendatins and pinins blindly, hwever famus r influential the persn might be. We shuld be pen t varius ideas, but always think independently and determine fr urselves. As a saying ges, ne man’s meat is anther man’s pisn. With that in mind, we are bund t find ut ur favrite writers thrugh reading and develp ur fine taste in English.
32.What made the first English nvel that the authr read hard t understand?
A.Difficult cnversatins. B.The ld-fashined vcabulary.
C.Nt knwing the scial backgrund.D.Sentences and Austen’s way f thinking.
33.What des the underlined wrd “vital” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Imprtant. B.Challenging. C.Typical. D.Cnvenient.
34.What advice des the authr give in the last paragraph?
A.Cmpare bks befre buying. B.Read bks that are influential.
C.Dn’t blindly fllw thers’ chices. D.Chse bks that challenge us mst.
35.What is the authr’s purpse f writing the passage?
A.Give cmments n literature wrks. B.Tell beginners hw t chse English bks.
C.Encurage peple t read mre English bks. D.Recmmend first class bks t English learners.
