I was at a new schl in a new state and needed smething slid t stand n: a place t feel grunded. I als needed t d laundry, s I walked t a nearby self-service laundry and stuffed a machine with my clthes. As I struggled t clse the washer dr, the wman wrking behind the cunter tld me t give it a gd hit with my hand. The washer did its jb, yet even after an hur, the dryer seemed t have barely warmed my clthes. I left, having decided t air-dry them n my car in the August heat.
A mnth later, I learned her name was Sandy, which she tld me after I’d helped her stp a washing machine frm mving acrss the flr. I was grading pems at a table when ne f the washers brke lse and skipped an inch int the air. I jumped t the machine and held n while she unplugged it. The next week, Sandy tld me dryer N. 8 was the fastest.
It went n like this. I’d d laundry nce a week, usually Thursday r Friday. Sandy wrked Tuesday thrugh Saturday and we’d talk small while I flded clthes. She tld me abut her sn and his grades, as well as the new dg they’d just adpted. She was fascinated that I was studying petry. She teased (开玩笑) that it was harder making a living as a pet than as a laundry attendant. Even then I knew she was prbably right.
I began t recgnize thers there: wrkers taking breaks by the dr, a mther and her baby, and even sme delivery drivers. But Sandy was the center f my cmmunity. Fr nearly three years and almst every week, I’d d laundry and talk with her. We checked n each ther, expecting the ther t be there. We asked where the ther had gne when we missed a week. There was a nte f cncern fr the ther’s absence, a nte f jy at their return.
    I’d fund a place t stand n slid grund.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are widely cnsidered a strng weapn in effrts against glbal warming. But are they like what peple believe? The Radiant Energy Grup (REG) stated effects f EVs vary with cuntries. In sme natins, EVs lead t the release f mre carbn gases than gasline cars. The grup reckned gas emissins (释放) caused by a gasline vehicle and frm charging an EV. Cuntries where charging an EV is cleaner than driving a gasline-pwered car use a lt f nuclear r slar pwer.
Sales f electric cars are rising the fastest in Eurpe. Data frm REG suggests EVs in Pland actually create mre carbn emissins because their electrical systems depend s much n cal. In ther Eurpean cuntries, hwever, EVs result in fewer emissins. The cuntries with the biggest carbn gas reductin use much clean pwer. The first was Switzerland at, 100 percent carbn reductins ver gasline vehicles.
Germany and Spain create lts f electricity frm the sun and wind. But the sun and wind dn’t add t a cuntry’s electrical system equally thrughut the day. Fr this reasn, carbn emissins saved by driving an EV aren’t fixed. Charging in the afternn, when there’s mre sun and wind, saves 16 t 18 percent mre carbn than at night when electrical systems are mre likely t be using gas r cal.
The gap in emissins between electric and, gasline-pwered vehicles has narrwed in recent years. In Eurpe, carmakers have been required t meet EU CO2 emissins f perfrmance standards. They’ve made their gasline engines mre sufficient, As a result, carbn emissins f new gasline- pwered cars in Eurpe have fallen an average f 25 percent in the past years. But EV sales in Eurpe are backed by gvernment spending and rules against new gasline engine cars after 2035. Majr autmakers have set targets t sell mainly EVs in Eurpe in the cming years.
    28. What des the underlined wrd “reckned” mean in paragraph 1?
    A. Increased.B. Calculated.C. Banned.D. Prevented.
    29. What affects carbn emissins f EVs accrding t paragraph 3?
    A. The cuntry where they’re made.B. Facilities prducing clean pwer.
    C. The time they are being charged.D. Technlgy used by electrical systems.
    30. What causes sales f EVs t rise quickly in Eurpe?
    A. Supprt f fficial plicies.B. Cncern abut glbal warming.
    C. Standards f gasline cars.D. Advertisements frm carmakers.
    31. Which can be the best title fr the text?
    A. What Benefits D EVs Bring?B. Will EVs Replace Gasline Cars in Eurpe?
    C. Hw D EVs Affect Carbn Emissins?D. D Electric Cars Really Help the Envirnment?

If it’s February and the marathn is in August, that’s a realistic time-frame t prepare. Start by planning t run 2 miles and wrk up gradually t the distance yu need.
    A. Make it realistic.
    B. It’s OK t dream big.
    C. What if yu keep slipping up?
    D. Let’s say yur gal is t get fit.
    E. S hw d yu stay mtivated and n track with yur gal?
    F. One way t make this easier is t break a big gal int small steps.
    G. Finding the mtivatin t d it isn’t necessarily easy, but it is always pssible.
