On a summer afternn, Ciara Whelan, a teacher at a New Yrk City elementary schl, visits ne f her students in the Brnx, Sapphira, wh fell behind in her reading.
This hme visit is the beginning f a reading prgram called Springbard Cllabrative. Springbard runs after-schl and summer prgrams with struggling readers. Once each week, a family member - mm, dad, grandma, an ld sibling(兄弟姐妹)-attends an hur-lng wrkshp t help learn and practice the appraches students are learning in class. “Parent engagement(参与)is the beating heart f ur prgrams,” says funder Alejandr Gibes de Gac. “It’s the spirit in the ccktail.”
Sapphira’s Springbard prgram is held in a classrm at a charter schl in Manhattan. In the classrm, Sapphira’s dad, sits with his daughter, helping her mark her place in the bk. After a few minutes f reading tgether, Whelan tells parents t ask students t summarize what is happening every few pages, t check cmprehensin.
In the past seven years, Springbard has cllected a great amunt f data t prve its effectiveness. Fr example: In just five weeks, n average, 3 ut f 4 students get t the next reading level r even further. The prgram als gives bks t each child. Backpacks full f schl supplies and tablets are ffered as encuragement fr cmpleting the whle prgram.
Springbard plans t increase the size by spreading its mdel, with a gal f reaching 100,000 children in the next fur years. Currently it’s running tests in different cities t see which parts f the prgram are necessary and imprtant and which culd be cut if a particular schl lacks mney fr them.
