Change, like sunshine, can be a friend r a fe (敌人), a blessing r a curse, a dawn r a dusk. Whenever yu read text, yur brain prcesses the visual stimuli (刺激物) t create meaning and understand the cntent. Chances are that yu dn't pay much attentin t the way the infrmatin is presented-- particularly the fnt (字体) chice. That's because yur main target is reading cmprehensin, nt aesthetics(美学,美感).
Althugh typgraphy(排印) is missed by mst f us, it's essential in making texts legible, readable and appealing fr audiences. Beynd the visual aspect, research shws that fnts play a significant rle in the mental prcesses f understanding that happen while we read. A fnt's impact n the way yu learn and memrize infrmatin might be hard t ntice cnsciusly, but yur brain is certainly tuned in. Perhaps surprisingly, hard-t-read fnts such as Bdni, Cmic Sans, r Mntype Crsiva are better fr memrizing infrmatin than fnts like Arial r Times New Rman, accrding t sme studies.
"Difficulty can functin as an alarm signal, giving the reader a sense that the task is challenging and will require mental effrt," says Daniel Oppenheimer, a prfessr f psychlgy at Carnegie Melln University and ne f a 2010 study authrs, "Additinally, slwing dwn the reading speed t deal with the disfluency may increase the prbability f sptting errrs in a text."
Fnt characteristics such as style, size and clr play a rle in infrmatin retentin memry r recall as well, says Stephen Banham, a typgraphy lecturer at RMIT University in Melburne, Australia. Experiments have prved a U-shape relatinship between fnt size and memry: Large-fnt items may predict higher recall regardless f style, but very small fnt sizes can als intrduce a desirable difficulty.
A dcument's specific methd f frmatting infrmatin als makes an impact. Using fnt styles like bld(粗体的) r italics(斜体字) t indicate significance can als imprve memry. That's because peple are better able t remember infrmatin they cnsider imprtant, says Oppenheimer. Researchers fund that blded text has a higher recall than text in italic r regular styles, regardless f the fnt size. Hwever, if an entire dcument is blded, the emphasis is lst, and readers can n lnger spt vital passages.
8. Why d readers ften ignre the fnt chice?
A. They lack aesthetic knwledge.
B. They aim t understand the meaning.
C. Their brains are nt sensitive t the fnt.
D. Fnts are f little significance in reading.
9. What des Daniel Oppenheimer say abut hard-t-read fnts?
A. They can lead t desirable challenges.
B. They may distract readers frm the text.
C. The meaning f the text may be mistaken.
D. They will affect reading perfrmance negatively.
10. What can imprve peple's infrmatin retentin r recall?
A. Using fnts f medium size.
B. Chsing bright fnt clrs.
C. Putting the wrds in italic type
D. Making the whle passage bld.
11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. What Fnts Make Reading Easy
B. What Fnts Make Memry Lasting
C. Why Fnts Impact Retentin and Recall
D. Hw Fnts Affect Learning and Memry
D
VARK is a questinnaire that helps with yur learning by suggesting the strategies yu shuld be using. Accrding t VARK, sme peple learn best by reading materials, while thers are mre visually-riented (视觉导向的) and must see smething t understand. Others might fall int the auditry learning subtype, meaning they tend t understand materials by listening t instructins. There are als kinesthetic (动觉的) learners, r thse wh learn best thrugh hands-n activities.
Learning style theries had their ppularity in the 1990s, when Beth Rgwsky was just starting as a middle schl teacher. “At that time, when my students were given sme learning material, if they disliked reading it, they culd listen t it instead as lng as they’d like t listen t thers reading it; whatever they preferred, they wuld be encuraged t d it,” says Rgwsky, wh is nw an assciate prfessr f teaching and learning at Blmsburg University in Pennsylvania.
But when it cmes t preferred learning styles, there’s a prblem. The idea f using learning styles emerged in the 1980s as many researchers viced their supprt, but few actually tested their cncepts t cnfirm the validity in randmized, experimental settings. In the 2000s, when researchers started t d just that, they fund little evidence that matching students t their suppsed learning style helped them memrize infrmatin better.
Rgwsky herself has cnfirmed the belief that learning styles dn’t hld up in her recent studies. In ne study published in Frntiers in Psychlgy this year, Rgwsky and her clleagues tested fifth-graders with preferred auditry and visual learning styles. Students were given standardized reading tests, in bth written and audi frmats. The team didn’t uncver a relatinship between their preferred learning styles and academic perfrmance, accrding t Rgwsky.
The team’s study nted that a preference t learn material using a certain methd culd mask skill lack. “Smene wh prefers t lean by listening instead f visual appraches might just have underdevelped reading skills. Letting students learn in their preferred manner desn’t push them t imprve weaker skill sets,” Rgwsky says. “If yu need t imprve yur skills, dn’t just keep ding what’s easy t yu.”
12.What’s the purpse f Paragraph 1?
A.T explain the cmplexity f the learning prcess.
B.T inspire peple t actively engage in a questinnaire.
C.T shw different peple have different learning styles.
D.T suggest using VARK t chse efficient learning styles.
13.What did Beth Rgwsky use t d when she was a middle schl teacher?
A.Encurage students t learn creatively.
B.Allw students t use their preferred learning style.
C.Help students imprve their reading and listening ability.
D.Prvide varied reading materials fr students t chse frm.
14.What des the underlined wrd “validity” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A.Crrectness.B.Faulty.C.Arrangement.D.Budget.
15.What can we learn frm Beth Rgwsky’s wrds in the last paragraph?
A.Students need t fcus n their academic perfrmance.
B.Students shuld stick t their favrite learning materials.
C.Students hiding skill lack can bst their cnfidence
D.Students shuld g beynd a certain preferred learning style.
