Where thers use sight, I use my sense f smell. When I was six, I embarrassed a by in class by telling the teacher he’d wet himself. He sat far behind me but I smelled it, intensely. He was s upset that my grandmther was called int schl. When we gt hme, she warned, “Never use yur sense f smell fr that again.” She explained that I, like her, had hereditary hypersmia, meaning I’m a super smeller.

In 1982, befre Les’s 32nd birthday, I smelled smething strange n him. I thught it might be the air f the place he wrked in. Twelve years later, in 1994, he was diagnsed with Parkinsn’s disease. It wasn’t until the last mnths f his life, mre than 20 years later, that we discvered I culd detect the disease in thers, t.
We felt a respnsibility t d smething. We attended a lecture by Prf. Kunath, a neurbilgist. I asked, “Why is the smell f Parkinsn’s nt being used fr early diagnsis?” He didn’t answer and we left, disappinted. But fur mnths later, he called ur hme. He had fund me after relaying my questin t a clleague, wh tld him, “Yu must find her.” We began t wrk as a team t prve my thery.
When Les died in 2015, he made me prmise I’d carry n the research. I spent time in labs, smelling sufferers’ skin il n swabs (棉签). I culd detect whether the persn had Parkinsn’s with 95% accuracy. This year, ur research team published a breakthrugh: a three-minute test that can detect the disease by running a swab alng smene’s neck skin.
I’ve becme knwn and delivered many lectures. I’m wrking n detecting cancers and tuberculsis. I never imagined, at 72, this wuld be my life’s wrk. I cnstantly think abut hw I lst my Les, but als hw I finally fulfilled my prmise.

Can yu imagine there being a cmmunity where bys and girls grwing up tgether can finally speak different languages? In Ubang, Nigeria, it really happens. It’s nt exactly clear what percentage f the wrds in the men’s and wmen’s languages are different, but there are enugh examples t make sentences sund different when they’re spken by the ppsite sex. Fr “clthing”, men use the wrd “nki”, while wmen say “ariga”; “kitchi” means “tree” fr men, while wmen say “kweng”. These are nt just sme slight prnunciatin differences, but ttally different wrds. “It’s almst like tw different lexicns (词汇表),” a language expert, Chi-Chi Undie said. “There are a lt f wrds that men and wmen share in cmmn, but there are thers which are ttally different depending n yur sex. They dn’t sund alike, and dn’t have the same letters. They are cmpletely different wrds.”
Interestingly, bth men and wmen are able t understand each ther perfectly in Ubang, as bth bys and girls grw up arund their parents and get t learn bth languages, but by the age f 10, bys are expected t speak in the male tngue. It seems that there is a stage when the male will discver he is nt using the rightful language. When he starts speaking the men’s language, yu knw the maturity is cming int him.
N ne really knws hw r why the duble-language traditin f Ubang began. Chi-Chi Undie believes the tw languages are the result f a “duble-sex culture” where men and wmen perate in tw separate spheres (范围) and live in separate wrlds that rarely cme tgether. Hwever, she admits this is a weak thery, as the duble-sex culture is present in many parts f Africa, where there are n different languages fr men and wmen.
Tday, with English wrds cnstantly entering the lexicn f yung Nigerians, Ubang’s tw languages are in danger f being lst frever. Wrse still, neither the male language nr the female language is written dwn, s they bth rely n yung peple t pass them dwn t the next generatin.

B. They learn bth languages at schl.
C. The men can speak tw different languages.
D. They are expsed t bth languages in their childhd.
30. What des Chi-Chi Undie mainly talk abut in paragraph 3?
A. The change f the duble-sex culture.
B. The future f the duble-sex culture.
C. The rigin f the duble-language traditin.
D. The sphere f the duble-language traditin.
31. Hw des the authr feel abut the disappearing languages in Ubang?

Mdern museums are trying everything they can t shre up declining attendance. Smehw, there always seems t be sme crisis that they are struggling against — a severe funding cut, fr example. What’s wrse, the unappreciative public is ging farther and farther away. S museums d what they can t attract peple, and the results are ccasinally wnderful and ccasinally laughable.
The wrst f such results ccurs when sme curatr, smene wh is in charge f a museum, decides that the reasn the audience isn’t puring thrugh the drs is that the cntent is ver their heads — the histry presented is t cmplex and plitical, the art t abstract, r the scientific explanatins t in-depth. What ccurs then is a unifrm simplifying f the exhibits. Text is minimized, and histrically significant pieces are passed ver in favr f thse mre pretty and pleasing. The museum becmes a place where peple g t lk at pretty things instead f a place fr learning, understanding and appreciating different cultures, art, and science.
All these effrts have given rise t the cncept f “edutainment”— a mixture in which learning is suppsed t be accmplished withut any effrt at all n the part f the visitr. Displays are cnstructed with an eye tward their entertainment value, with relevant facts slipped secretly in, as thugh learning were a bitter pill that must be sugarcated befre the average museum visitrs can be induced (劝诱) t swallw it. But true educatin is an active pursuit, nt smething ne receives like a piece f candy. The museum’s jb shuld be t inspire visitrs t lk deeper, nt t frce-feed them predigested facts.
If a museum becmes indistinguishable frm a theme park, it has failed. Nnprfit institutins exist because, if they did nt, n fr-prfit institutins wuld serve their functin. If active schlarship is missing, then by all means, supply it, instead f shaping the museum t resemble successful entertainment enterprises.
What can we learn frm paragraph 1?
Mdern museums succeed in raising funds.
Mdern museums have been quite appreciated.
Mdern museums are facing many challenges.
Mdern museums are ften far away frm city centers.
33. Which f the fllwing best explains “ver their heads” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. simple and pleasing B. badly expressed
C. educatinal and imprtant D. t difficult t understand
34. Which f the fllwing wuld the authr mst prbably agree with?
A. Learning is suppsed t be interesting.
B. Edutainment shuldn’t be practiced in museums.
C. Museums shuld help visitrs enjy learning.
D. Museums shuldn’t prvide cmplex cntent.
35. What is the main purpse f the text?
A. T pint ut a prblem f mdern museums.
B. T encurage readers t visit museums.
C. T advise readers t acquire knwledge actively.
D. T shw sme gd changes in mdern museums.
