Whenever I think f Ms. Anita Mre, I always smile and feel frtunate t have her as my teacher. All f her students knew she lved being a teacher. Her classrm was always a safe place where we were encuraged t share, think, and express urselves.

Yu dn’t get a secnd chance t make a first impressin — this was the theme f this year’s Internatinal Public Speaking Cmpetitin (IPSC), held in Lndn frm May 11 t 12. Thirty-three yung speakers aged 16 t 20 frm arund the wrld gathered at The English Speaking Unin t tell their stries, including Wu Dngxu, 19, a student frm China. T him, the event wasn’t just abut giving a speech n first impressins. It als made a strng impressin n him.
“Rather than a cmpetitin, the experience was mre like an inspiring research trip t me, a trip that allwed me t see firsthand the differences and similarities between Chinese and freign cultures,” said Wu.
Apart frm the bvius differences in fd, transprtatin and climate, what impressed Wu mst was the different styles f Chinese and freign public speaking.
Althugh still a teen, Wu is n stranger t the public speaking pdium (讲台). He has participated in many speaking cmpetitins since 2017. But n the stage f the IPSC, speakers had n pdium t stand behind. They just had t face the audience.
“This was the first time that I gave a speech withut a pdium, which made me realize hw imprtant eye cntact and bdy language are,” said Wu. “It als gave me mre freedm t cnvey mre infrmatin with my bdy language instead f just with wrds.”
Anther difference that caught Wu’s attentin was the evaluatin criteria (评价标准). Accrding t him, in every speaking cmpetitin he had participated in in China, things like prnunciatin, fluency and quality f language are always imprtant. But t his surprise, in the IPSC accents and grammatical mistakes are nt cnsidered in the evaluatin prcess. It is the stry itself that matters mst.
“Audiences are eager t hear pwerful stries, n matter where they are frm. That’s because the emtins expressed in them are shared by all human beings althugh there are the cultural differences.” said Wu. “Diversity, respect, tlerance and understanding — these are what the IPSC really wants t stress and spread.”

Accrding t the researchers, plants make sunds at frequencies (频率) between 40 t 80 KHZ — ut f the range f human ears — but within the range f sme animals. “Bats make sunds in these ranges all the time, and mice, dgs and cats can partially hear within it,” Dr. Lilach Hadany, a Prfessr at Tel Aviv University, and ne f the authrs f the study said.
One f the primary breakthrughs (突破) f Hadany’s study is that the researchers have managed t understand and classify the sunds that plants make fr the first time. Plants that are nt stressed make abut ne nise per hur, but plants that are stressed r injured make many hundreds f sunds per hur. 第一档(0~4分)
表现出的语言能力较差,基本上无完整句子,仅有一些与单词或试题要求的内容相关。
1.考生所写内容与试题提示无关,不给分。
2.词数少于80或大于120,扣2分。
3.拼写与标点符号是体现语言准确性的一个方面,评分时应视其对交际的影响程度予以考虑。英、美拼写均可接受。
注意:
1.考生如果写出四个完整的要点,原则上定为第三、四档,即10~17分之间。语言错误相对较多,则属于第三档,即在10~13分之间;语言错误相对较少,但多数为简单句,则属于第四档,即在14~17分之间。如果考生使用了很多高级表达,且句式多样,则为第五档,即在18~20分之间。不过,满分需慎重。
