After a five-year travel t study plants, animals and fssils(化石) in Suth America and n the islands in the Pacific, British naturalist Charles Darwin brught the idea f natural selectin t the attentin f the wrld in his best-selling bk, On the Origin f Species.
Natural selectin is the prcess thrugh which ppulatins f living rganisms adapt and change naturally. Individuals in a ppulatin are naturally variable. In ther wrds, they are all different in sme ways. This variatin means that sme individuals have characteristics better suited t the envirnment than thers. Individuals with adaptive characteristics―characteristics that give them sme advantage-are mre likely t survive and reprduce. These individuals then pass the adaptive characteristics n t their children. Over time, these characteristics becme mre cmmn in the ppulatin. Thrugh this prcess f natural selectin, adaptive characteristics are passed n t the next generatins. Thse rganisms that cannt adapt fast enugh thrugh natural selectin will die ut.
Natural selectin can als lead t new and distinctly different species. It is ne f the prcesses that drive phylgenesis and help t explain the diversity f life n Earth.
Darwin chse the name natural selectin t cntrast with artificial selectin that is cntrlled by humans. Darwin and ther scientists f his day argued that a prcess much like artificial selectin happened in nature, withut any human help. He argued that natural selectin explained hw a wide variety f life frms develped vertime frm a single cmmn ancestr.
Thrugh studying the fssil recrd, we knw that sme species may nt be able t adapt fast enugh thrugh natural selectin and many f them that nce lived n Earth are nw extinct. Dinsaurs are ne example. Hwever, human actins such as ver hunting and the destructin f habitats have becme the main cause f extinctins tday.
    32. Why d sme species die ut accrding t the text?
    A. They can't adapt t the changed envirnments.
    B. They fail t learn frm their cmmn ancestrs.
    C. They have t many variable individuals in the species.
    D. They cannt find enugh fd and starve t death slwly.
    33. What des the und r lied wrd “phylgenesis” n paragraph 3 refer t?
    A. Extinctin.B. Expsure. C. Develpment.D. Replacement.
    34. Which paragraph men tins the difference between artificial and natural selectins?
    A. Paragraph 1B. Paragraph 2.C. Paragraph 3.D. Paragraph 4.
    35. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
    A. Species’ extinctin is slwing dwn recently.
    B. Human actins can lead t species’ extinctins
    C. Measures must be taken t stp eating animals.
    D. Artificial selectin is mre imprtant than natural selectin.
