The study shwed that fr the past decade r s, breal frests, especially frests in the uppermst reaches f Alaska, Canada, and Russia, have steadily becme drier and htter as heat waves and drught affected the envirnment. Fires in breal frests are a nrmal part f the life cycle f trees that grw there. But climate change is thrwing that cycle ut f whack. Just in the past handful f years, frests in nrthern latitudes (纬度) reached a tipping pint and started t prduce far mre emissins than usual.
The researchers btained the data fr their study by tracking cncentratins f emissins in the atmsphere using satellites, and then they put that infrmatin int a cmputer mdel t determine where, gegraphically, thse emissins came frm. They fund that breal frests, which typically prduce abut 10 percent f the glbe’s annual wildfire emissins, accunted fr 23 percent f the wrld’s wildfire emissins in 2021—mre than twice as much as nrmal. A study by Judith Okely, Kative Overy, and Ian Deary published in the September 2022 issue f Psychlgical Science suggests that learning t play a musical instrument can imprve peple’s cgnitive (认知的) abilities, at least in the lng term.
These researchers analyzed data frm a study that fllwed a grup f individuals wh grew up in Sctland and were brn in 1936. They were given several different kinds f tests and surveys ver the curse f their lives.
Of particular interest, these participants did a test f cgnitive ability at the age f 11 and again at the age f 70. At the age f 82, surviving members f this grup were als asked abut their experience f learning t play a musical instrument ver the curse f their lives. The study left ut peple wh still played their instrument s regularly at the age f 82 t avid influencing the results strngly.
In the study, participants were asked questins abut the number f instruments played, years f experience, years f practice, and hurs per week f practice. This way, the researchers culd lk at whether mre experience with an instrument had a bigger impact n cgnitive ability than less experience.
The analysis suggests that there is a small but reliable influence f playing a musical instrument n increases in cgnitive ability ver the lifespan (寿命). Experience f playing an instrument led t a little ver a 1% increase in perfrmance n tests f cgnitive ability n average. While that may nt seem like much, peple have many experiences in their lives, and mst dn’t lead t any reliable change in verall cgnitive ability.
These findings d nt explain why playing an instrument might have this effect n ability. One aspect that may matter is that it helps t teach peple a full cycle f hw invlvement and practice lead t imprvement.
