I was sitting at my desk when anther graduate student in my lab apprached me. “Can yu help?” he asked. His experiment wasn’t wrking and he desperately needed help. I was then a fifth year PhD student, and I tk pride in being the senir member f the lab, whm everyne lked up t. But that als meant I was the ne everyne turned t fr help - which ate away hurs, days, and smetimes weeks that I culd have spent n my wn research.
There were many reasns I had a hard time saying n t such pleas(恳求). I was new t the United States fr graduate schl. I fund it difficult t make new friends and discver activities I enjyed. S 1 spent a huge chunk f my time in the lab, with my lab-mates serving as my primary surce f scial cnnectin. I feared that if I brushed them ff, I’d lse their favr.
But the extra respnsibilities came at a cst. I had t wrk extra hurs t catch up with my wn wrk, and I ften made sacrifices t my persnal life.
It wasn’t until my wife gave birth t ur first child that I realized hw thin I had stretched myself, and hw misguided my pririties were. While she lay in a hspital bed in the early stages f labr, I sat nearby hunched(伏首前倾的)ver my laptp finishing up a wrk reprt hurs later, after hearing my daughter’s first cry and watching her tiny fingers grab tightly nt mine, it dawned n me: I shuld have been fully present during my daughter’s birth. I was clearly spending t much time wrking if my jb had intruded(侵入)int ne f the mst precius mments f my life.
Frm then n, I decided t spend mre time with my family by paring dwn my wrk tasks and carefully cnsidering each request fr help. I still enjyed cllabrating with thers, but I priritized mutually beneficial tasks r thse my manager asked me t take n, rather than accepting everything that came my way.
I nticed many benefits: n lnger wrking vertime, mre family time, and imprved wrk perfrmance. I was als pleased t discver that “Srry, I’d lve t help but I have a deadline cming up” is an acceptable respnse t a request fr assistance.
It’s hard t say “n” t thse yu wrk with. But I’ve learned that smetimes that’s the best curse f actin t avid an excessive wrklad and lead a freer and happier life.
24. Why did the authr find it difficult t refuse the requests f his lab-mates?

Cancer is caused by gene mutatins (突变) that accumulate in cells ver time, yet lng-lived animals that have lts f cells, such as elephants and whales, hardly ever get it. Why?
Fr elephants, at least, part f the answer may be the gene cmmnly knwn as p53, which als helps humans and many ther animals repair DNA damaged during replicatin (复制). Elephants have an amazing 20 cpies f this gene. Thse cpies, each with tw variatins prduce a ttal f 40 prteins, cmpared with humans’ (and mst animals’) single cpy prducing tw prteins.
In mammals, p53 plays a crucial rle in preventing mutated cells frm turning int tumrs (肿瘤). It wrks by pausing replicatin and then either initiating repair r causing cells t self-destruct if the damage is t extensive. Withut actin frm p53, cancer can easily take hld: in mre than half f all human cancers, the gene’s functin has been lst thrugh randm mutatins.
The scientists virtually mdeled and studied carefully elephants’ 40 p53 prteins, finding tw ways the gene culd help elephants avid cancer. First, the fact that elephants pssess multiple cpies lwers the chance f p53 n lnger wrking because f mutatins. Additinally, elephants’ p53 cpies activate in respnse t varying mutatins and s respnd t damaged cells differently, which likely gives an edge when detecting and getting rid f mutatins.
These “remarkable” results imply that elephants have a series f means thrugh which p53 can perate, says Sue Haupt, a cell bilgist wh was nt invlved in the wrk. This pints t “exciting pssibilities fr explring pwerful new appraches t cancer prtectin in humans,” she adds.
Study c-authr Rbin Fahraeus and his clleagues are nw fllwing up n these results using bld samples frm an African elephant at the Vienna Z. They are explring hw its p53 prteins interact with damaged cells and plan t cmpare thse findings with results frm human cells.
28. What des the underlined wrd “initiating” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Delaying.B. Indicating.C. Stpping. D. Starting.
29. Hw d p53 cpies free elephants frm cancer?
A. By preventing the replicatin thrughly.
B. By prviding precise respnse cntinuusly.
C. By lwering the chance f mutatins in advance.
D. By repairing the damaged cells in the same way.
30. What can we cnclude frm the last 2 paragraphs?
A. The results need further tests.
B. Mre bilgists will participate in the study.
C. The results thrw light n humans’ fighting cancer.
D. Researchers have new findings in African elephants.
31. What is the text mainly abut?
A. Why elephants dn’t get cancer.
B. What cntributes t elephants’ lng life.
C. Where the anticancer breakthrugh lies.
D. Hw the key cancer-fighting gene wrks.

Jasn, a straight-A student frm the University f Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseud-wrking” t describe hw many f us study. The pseud-wrker lks and feels like smene wh is wrking hard — he r she spends a lng time in the library and is nt afraid t push n late int the night — but, because f a lack f fcus and cncentratin, he r she’s desn’t actually accmplish much.
This phenmenn can be seen n mst cllege campuses. Fr example, at Dartmuth there was a sectin f the main library that was pen twenty-fur hurs a day, and the students I used t see there late at night crwded in grups, drinking cffee, were definitely pseud-wrking. The rmmate wh flips thrugh her chemistry ntes n the cuch while watching TV is pseud-wrking.
By placing themselves in distracting envirnments and insisting n wrking lng hurs, these students are damaging their brain’s ability t think clearly and efficiently accmplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effrt.
The bigger prblem here is that mst students dn’t even realize that they’re pseud-wrking. T them pseud-wrking is wrk — it’s hw they’ve always dne it, and it’s hw all f their friends d it. It never crsses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, n the ther hand, knw all abut pseud-wrking. They fear it. It nt nly wastes time, but it’s als mentally tiring.
In fact, the mst imprtant skill in becming a straight-A student is the ability t get wrk dne quickly and with a minimum f wasted effrt. Sme cgnitive science research cncludes that abut fifty minutes is the ptimal learning perid t maximize the material integrated per time unit. S hw d these students achieve this gal? T understand their secret t success, cnsider the fllwing simple frmula (公式): wrk accmplished = time spent × intensity f fcus.
Pseud-wrking features a very lw intensity f fcus. Therefre, t accmplish smething by pseud-wrking, yu need t spend a lt f time. The straight-A apprach n the ther hand, increases intensity in rder t use less time.
32. Which f the fllwing phenmenn is pseud-wrking?
A.Tm is busy taking ntes while attending a lecture.
B. Mike is sitting at a study lunge in preparatin fr a final exam quietly.
C. Jack spends a lng time in the library n his essay while listening t music.
D. Alice and Sara are sitting n the cuch reading their favrite bks.
33. Cmpared with straight-A students, the majr prblem f mst students is that they ______.
A. want t spend mre time n study B. are eager t fllw their friends’ way
C. have gt used t their study apprachD. are unaware f their pseud-wrking
34. What des the underlined wrd “ptimal” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Pssible. B. Best. C. Least. D. Accurate.
35. What des the authr want t stress by mentining the frmula?
A. The length f time n study cunts.
B. Cncentratin plays a key rle in study.
C. Getting wrk dne quickly means everything.
D. Effective study apprach is very imprtant.

While teenagers wh are at risk f depressin with risky behavirs — drinking alchl, smking cigarettes and cutting classes ften alert parents and teachers that serius prblems are brewing, a new study finds that there’s anther grup f adlescents wh are in nearly as much danger f experiencing the same mental symptms.
These teens use tns f media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary(不爱活动的) lifestyle. 36 But the study warns that it is teenagers wh engage in all three f these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerus psitin. 37
The study’s authrs surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behavirs, including excessive alchl use, illegal drug use, heavy smking and high media use. 38 The grup that scred high n all nine f the risk behavirs was mst likely t shw symptms f depressin; in all, nearly 15% f this grup reprted being depressed, cmpared with just 4% f the lw-risk grup. But the invisible grup wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with mre than 13% f them exhibiting depressin.
The findings caught Carli ff guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk grup and lw-risk grup are bvius, but this third grup was nt nly unexpected. 39
Carli says that ne f the mst significant things abut his study is that it prvides new early warning signs fr parents, teachers and mental health-care prviders. 40
A.Because their behavirs are nt usually seen as a red flag, these yung peple have been called the “invisible risk” grup by the study’s authrs.
B.Their aim was t determine the relatinship between these risk behavirs and mental health issues in teenagers.
