W: How did they come up with the idea of setting up the firm?

W: Really? How did you like your experience abroad?
M: Absolutely amazing! It was nearly a decade ago. I made the long journey to China for a summer school program. I went to live with a local family who offered me an unforgettable experience. Three years ago, my parents founded My Staylinks. I would certainly follow in my family’s footsteps and become a home-stay host in the future, even though I’m busy running my own business now.
W: So nice of you to do what your parents are doing.

A few years ago on a vacation trip, I made a video of myself dancing wildly in foreign places. I put it on the Internet. Some friends started passing it around and soon millions of people watched it. I was offered money to continue my travels. And since then, I’ve made two more videos that include seventy countries on all seven continents.
A lot of people wanted to dance along with me, so I started inviting them to join in everywhere I went. Here’s what I can report back. People want to feel connected to each other. They want to be heard and seen, and they’re curious to hear and see others from places far away. I share that idea. It’s exactly what drives me to travel. When I dance with people, I see them smile and laugh. It makes me truly excited.

One of the hardest things to do when you are a small child is to start school, and have a new teacher every year. I remember when I was in the fourth grade, there were tons of rumours (谣言) about my teacher. They said that he would hit kids with erasers. Nothing could be farther from the truth, and to this day I still remember him as one of those people who really helped me in life.
One of the things that you can do to help your kids get ready for a new teacher is to go to meet him or her before the year starts. This allows students to know who the teacher is, and break the ice.
It is common for students to be fearful of the teacher for the first few days. Maybe he or she looks scary (可怕的). However, as a parent, you need to teach your kids that teachers are people too, and that they want nothing but the best for students in life.
If your child is still having trouble adjusting to (适应) a teacher, you could ask your child to be taught by a different teacher.
Adjusting to teachers can be an uncertain thing for a young child. Whether your child knows nothing about this person, or maybe he has heard a rumour about him, it can be a scary thing. As a parent, all you can do is to make sure that your children know the teacher is there to help, not be scary.
    24. We know when the author was in the fourth grade, he ________.
    A. got little help from his teacher B. liked his teacher very much
    C. got along well with his classmates D. was hit by his teacher with erasers
    25. What does the underlined part in the first paragraph probably mean?
    A. What they said was wrong. B. Truth lies in the rumours.
    C. Nothing can be true in the world. D. They did well in their lessons.
    26. At the beginning of the school year, kids are most probably ________.
    A. excited B. proud C. surprised D. fearful
    27. This passage is mainly written for ________.
    A. teachers B. students C. parents D. kids
    【答案】24. B 25. A 26. D 27. C

    【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“It is common for students to be fearful of the teacher for the first few days. (在最初的几天里,学生害怕老师是很常见的。)”可知,在最初的几天里,学生们是害怕老师的。故选D。

The elderly residents in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s well-being. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.
“I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.
“It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be participating in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.”
    28. What is the purpose of the project?
    A. To ensure harmony in care homes. B. To promote the elderly people’s welfare.
    C. To raise money for medical research. D. To provide part-time jobs for the aged.
    29. How has the project affected Ruth Xavier?
    A. She has learned new life skills. B. She has developed a strong personality.
    C. She has recovered her memory. D. She has gained a sense of achievement.
    30. What do the underlined words “embark on” mean in paragraph 7?
    A. Improve. B. Oppose. C. Begin. D. Evaluate.
    31. What can we learn about the project from the last two paragraphs?
    A. It is well received. B. It needs to be more creative.
    C. It is highly profitable. D. It takes ages to see the results.

    【31题详解】

The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there’s a new bonus to add to the ever-growing list. New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia in later life, and as they did, it came on a decade later than less sporty women.
Lead researcher Dr. Helena Horder, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said : "These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people's cardiovascular (心血管的)fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia. "
For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted to measure their peak (最大值的) cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts.
A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level, or 120 watts or higher. A total of 92 women were in the medium fitness category; and 59 women were in the low fitness category, defined as a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or having their exercise tests stopped because of high blood pressure, chest pain or other cardiovascular problems.
These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades. During that time, 44 of the women developed dementia. Five percent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 percent of the women with medium fitness and 32 percent of the women with low fitness.
"However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and dementia, it only shows an association. More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important. " She also admitted that a relatively small number of women were studied, all of whom were form Sweden, so the results might not be applicable to other groups.
    32. What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph?
    A. Positive effects of doing exercises.
    B. Exercises suitable for the middle-aged.
    C. Experimental studies on diseases.
    D. Advantages of sporty woman over man
    33. Why did the researchers ask the women to do bicycle exercise?
    A. To predict their maximum heart rate.
    B. To assess their cardiovascular capacity
    C. To change their habits of working out
    D. To detect their potential health problems
    34. What do we know about Dr Horder's study?
    A. It aimed to find a cure for dementia.
    B. Data collection was a lengthy process.
    C. Some participants withdrew from it.
    D. The results were far from satisfactory.
    35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia
    B. Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise
    C. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia
    D. Biking Improves Women's Cardiovascular Fitness
    【答案】32. A 33. B 34. B 35. C

Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of someone you don’t know so well. I have forgotten the name of an old lady, who was a customer on the paper route in my home town when I was a twelve-year-old boy. Yet it dwells in my memory that not only she made delicious cookies but also she taught me a lesson in forgiveness that I shall never forget.
On a winter afternoon, a friend and I were throwing stones onto the slanted roof of the old lady’s house from a spot near her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how the stones changed to missiles as they rolled to the roof’s edge and shot out into the yard like comets (彗星) falling from the sky. I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and threw it out. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight not for the roof but for a small window on the old lady’s back porch. At the sound of fractured (断裂破裂的) glass, we knew we were in trouble. We turned tail and ran faster than any of our missiles flew off her roof.
I was too scared about getting caught that first night to be concerned about the old lady with the broken window in winter. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her misfortune. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to act comfortable in her presence.
I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I calculated would cover the cost of her window. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I waited until it was dark, snuck (潜行) up to the old lady’s house, and put the letter I didn’t sign through the letter slot in her door.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, I handed the old lady her paper as usual.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】One possible version:
I waited until it was dark, snuck (潜行) up to the old lady’s house, and put the letter I didn’t sign through the letter slot in her door. I felt so nervous as if she were looking at me angrily in the distance for she found out who had broken her window. Fortunately, no one was there, and on the other hand, my soul felt relieved and redeemed and I could have the freedom of, once again, looking straight into the old lady’s kind eyes.
The next day, I handed the old lady her paper as usual. I was able to return the warm smile that I was receiving from her. She thanked me for the paper and gave me a bag of cookies she had made herself. I thanked her and proceeded to eat the cookies as I continued my route. After several cookies, I felt an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was stunned. Inside were the seven dollars and a short note that said, “I’m proud of you.”
