I Was the Doughnut Lady
In university I had a part-time job at a shop that sold doughnut s and coffee. Situated on a block where several buses stopped, it served the people who had a few minutes to wait for their bus.
Every afternoon around four o'clock, a group of school children would burst into the shop, and business would come to a stop. Adults would glance in, see the crowd and pass on. But I didn't mind if the children waited for their bus inside. Sometimes I would hand out a bus fare when a ticket went missing-always repaid the next day. On snowy days I would give away some doughnuts. I would lock the door at closing time, and we waited in the warm shop until their bus finally arrived.
I enjoyed my young friends, but it never occurred to me that I played an important role in their lives—until one afternoon when a man came and asked if I was the girl working on weekdays around four o'clock. He identified himself as the father of two of my favorites.
“I want you to know I appreciate what you do for my children. I worry about them taking two buses to get home. It means a lot that they can wait here and you keep an eye on them. When they are with the doughnut lady, I know they are safe.” I told him it wasn't a big deal, and that I enjoyed the kids.
So I was the Doughnut Lady. I not only received a title, but became a landmark. Now I think about all the people who keep an eye on my own children. They become, well, Doughnut Ladies. Like the men a t the skating rink, who let my boys ring home; Or the bus driver who drove my daughter to her stop at the end of the route at night but wouldn't leave until I arrived to pick her up; Or that nice police officer who took pity on my boys walking home in the rain when I was at work—even though the phone rang all the next day with calls from curious neighbors. “Was that a police car I saw at your house last night?”
That wasn't a police car. That was a Doughnut Lady.
41. According to the passage, the author sometimes ______.
A. sold bus tickets to the children B. gave the children free doughnuts
C. did business with the children's help D. called the children's parents to pick them up
42. By saying “...it wasn't a big deal (Para. 4),” the author meant that ______.
A. she hadn't done anything significant
B. she hadn't spent much time with the children
C. she hadn't made a lot of money from the children
D. she hadn't found it hard to get along with the children
43. What can we learn about the police officer? ______
A. He took the boys to the police station.
B. He helped the boys look for their mother.
C. He drove the boys back home in a police car.
D. He managed to make sure of the boys' identity.
44. Why did the neighbors call the next day?
A. They called to comfort them.
B. They tried to make sure they were fine.
C. They wanted to confirm it was really a police car.
D. They wondered what the police brought them on such a rainy night.
45. The passage suggests that ______.
A. running a business requires skill B. taking responsibility is a moral virtue

For as long as there have been gifts, we naturally make choices based on the recipient (接受者). But what if we have been wrong all along and that we could turn things around, which not only made gift buying easier, but the recipient happier?
In 2015, psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin conducted an online survey, which suggested that when people buy gifts, they prefer to choose something based on the recipient’s personality and tastes. Most people also said that they preferred receiving gifts bought with them in mind: gifts for them.
But Human and Aknin wondered if this approach to giving failed to take advantage of the way we connect as people. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals(揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After the purchase, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers.
To find out how that approach goes down with recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes to give to a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients of songs that revealed something of the givers felt closer to them than those who received gifts bought only with them in mind.
Human and Aknin suggest it might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal” of a gift and surely it should be—then we “may well be advised to offer more self-reflective gifts”. In short, for a present to be meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not so closely suit the recipient’s practical needs or tastes as one acquired purely with that in mind.
Moreover, giving something of oneself can be a safer act, the psychologists added. Because it reduces the risk of revealing poor knowledge of a recipient by attempting to buy something that fits their character—and failing.
But a note of caution here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated, unsympathetic giver-centered giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal self-obsession” —and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves.
46. From the Mother’s Day card test, we can conclude that ________.
A. gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the giver
B. most people choose gifts with the recipient in mind
C. most people choose gifts based on their personal tastes
D gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the recipient
47. What do the underlined words “them, them” refer to in order of appearance?
A. The recipients; the givers. B. The givers; the recipients.
C. The givers; the givers. D. The recipients; the recipients.
48. What does the author think is the significance of gift giving?
A. Making the giver’s life happier.
B. Showing one’s knowledge of the recipient.
C. Establishing and strengthening social connections.
D. Meeting the recipient’s practical needs.
49. Which of the following is Human and Aknin’s advice on gift giving?
A. Choose gifts that reflect more of yourself.
B. Just focus on your own tastes when choosing gifts.
C. Buy something that fits the recipient’s character most.
D. Be careful not to signal your true personality.
50. Which is the best title of this passage?
A. The tradition of gift giving. B. The purpose of gift giving.
C. The effect of gift giving. D. The psychology of gift giving.
D
If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: More hugs. More time outside in nature. More belief in their own power to change the world. While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.
Let’s start with the idea that all of us-especially young people-need heroes. We need them to be our guides on the difficult trail (足迹) we call life and to show us just how far we can go. And we need heroes today more than ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity (名人) and a hero. And the difference is vital. A celebrity is all about fame (名望)-temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character-qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.
Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.
Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy-which shoes, which cell phone-not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities-their own power to make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person. Each of them, from whatever background, is a positive force who can do something. All it takes for that to be true is belief.
How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.
Ryan, age 11, has worked tirelessly to raise money to provide clean drinking water to African villages. When he first heard about the plight (困苦) of African children who died from impure water, Ryan was only six years old. In the next five years, he raised over $500, 000-enough to build over 70 water wells.
Barbara, age 17, grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling center for crude (未加提炼的) oil. Her project has grown to include 18 recycling centers in Texas.
The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.
51. What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?
A. To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.
B. To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.
C. To provide definitions of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.
D. To explain the details about being celebrities and heroes.
52. What is the meaning of the word “superficial” in Paragraph 2?
A. Not known.
B. Unexpected.
C. Undeveloped.
D. Without depth.
53. What could be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Heroes make the world go round.
B. Heroes must believe in themselves.
C. Heroes focus on social welfare programs.
D. Heroes promote cooperation between people.
54. How does the author advance his view that young people have the potential to be a hero?
A. By defining the qualities that make a young person a hero.
B. By contrasting the achievements made by different young people.
C. By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.
D. By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.
55. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. More heroes are needed in the world.
B. Celebrities are reported too much in the media.
C. Adults should become role models for young people.
D. Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee.
I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs.
We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and helps me believe that I can do anything.

根据第二段中的“After the purchase, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers.”
根据画线词所在句的前一句“Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers.”
根据第五段中的“If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal” of a gift and surely it should be”可知,如果建立更强大的社会关系是送礼的潜在目标,那么它当然是,由此可知,作者认为送礼的意义在于建立和加强社会联系,故C项正确。
根据第五段中的“then we “may well be advised to offer more self-reflective gifts”可知,Human 和Aknin建议选择礼物时应该选择更能反映你自己的礼物,故A项正确。
A Not known.
B. Unexpected.
B 52. D 53. A 54. C 55. D
根据文章第二段的“Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity (名人) and a hero.(我们的现代社会对于名人和英雄之间的区别非常困惑。)”可知,作者说出我们对“名人和英雄的区别”很困惑,所以接下来讲到了“A celebrity is all about fame (名望)-temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character-qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.(名人就是名声——暂时的、superfacial名声,通常是因为那些显而易见的品质:漂亮的脸蛋、出色的舞姿。相比之下,英雄是指在他们采取行动之前才会显现出来的隐藏在表面之下的性格品质。)”,这是对这种区别的阐述,所以作者写第二段的目的是讨论名人与英雄的区别。故选B。
【52题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段的“usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move(通常是那些显而易见的品质:漂亮的脸蛋,很棒的舞步)”可知,名人所谓的名声是肤浅的,没有深度的,superficial的意思是“没有深度的”,和without depth意思相近,故选D。
根据文章第三段“They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.(他们无私地致力于帮助他人、教育孩子和保护环境,真正地将我们的世界团结在一起。他们不需要名声或荣耀;他们只是想帮忙。在许多方面,这些无名英雄为我们所有人的航船领航。)”可知,英雄在这个世界上发挥着积极着作用,推动着世界积极的运转。故选A。
根据文章第五段中的“How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.(我们如何帮助年轻人相信自己的力量?最好的方法就是分享其他做出改变的年轻人的例子。)”可知,作者想用分享年轻人用自己的力量做出有影响的事的例子,来论证自己的观点。接下来两段分别列举Ryan和Barbara两位年轻人的事例,来说明年轻人具有成为英雄的潜力。再根据最后一段“The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.(这样的例子还有很多。这些只是年轻人发现自己可以利用自己的精力做一些伟大事情的几个例子。)”可知,作者就是用举例的方式来进一步阐述自己观点。故选C。
【55题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段的“While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.(虽然大多数人都明白前两个愿望的重要性,但第三个愿望让一些人想知道,为什么年轻人相信自己的力量如此重要。)”和最后一段的“These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.(这些只是年轻人发现自己可以利用自己的精力做一些伟大事情的几个例子。)”

A meaningful experience
I am a 17-year-old middle school student. Last Sunday, while I was at home working at my lessons, it came to my notice that my parents were still occupied with their daily routine. Seeing the enormous housework and at the thought of what they have done for me over the years, I rose to my feet and meant to help relieve their workload.
I collected all the books, newspapers and other things scattered in the rooms and put them in place. Then I wiped the dust off all the furniture and the next half hour saw me busy cleaning the floor. Before I knew it, it was almost noon. Through my efforts, I prepared a few common dishes just as my parents were coming home.
Seeing the surprised look on their faces and hearing their hearty praise, tired as I was, I felt proud that I was old enough to shoulder part of the household duties.
